I have completed this challenge for the second time this year and I will leave it at that for this year. If we are doing this again next year I will join in the fun again but I am not going to try for a third time this year. Good luck to the rest in completing this challenge!

message 53: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Congrats!
I just need one more book to finish a second time.

message 54: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Cool! Should be possible then since you still have 4 months to finish.

Congrtz Barbara!

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished again.

message 58: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Congrats, again!
I still need that 4th book in a series to finish again.

message 59: by Naz (new)

Naz (nazz) Maybe we should make this challenge more... challenging next year?

message 60: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lol, perhaps :) In which case I should just sit it out because I haven't even finished this once.

message 61: by Naz (new)

Naz (nazz) Alternatively we can throw paint balloons at the over achievers :)

message 62: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Congratz on doing it again!

Congrats Mohammed and welcome to the club of overachievers!

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks everyone. These reading challenges are really fun.

Maybe next year if we do it a second time, we should reverse the challenge.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Or go higher than number 5 in a series. I read series that go up to 10 books and higher.

message 66: by Chrizette (new)

Chrizette | 906 comments I seem to have read a whole lot of "first in the series" books but nothing after that . . . strange . . . lol

message 67: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Lol yea same here. I should really finish some series!

message 68: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm just not a series reader. Even Game of Thrones, which I found compelling and have easy access to, fell by the wayside.

It seems I really have to force myself to get past book two.

message 69: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I haven't even gotten to book two. And I do have it. I even have book 3 and 4, but other books or more urgent right now and I do finish most series but that is because I mostly buy them when they are done and then read them in one go.

message 70: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Think we should re-post this challenge for next year? Or just leave it?

message 71: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
We could re-post it but then a little different.
I and other people in this group read a lot of series that go beyond book 5.
So why not post it as a points gathering challenge. You read a book in a series and you get 1 point if it is the first book, 2 points if it is the second, etc, etc, etc. At the end of the year we see how many points everyone has gathered.

message 72: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I like that idea :)

Although, perhaps we should make separate rules for series with stand-alone novels, like the Discworld series, otherwise you could get 39 points reading Snuff, hehe. That's what I would do...

message 73: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
But even in the Discworld novels there are series. Like the Tiffany Aching books. Terry himself has stated that they are a seperate series within the Discworld novels as are the Guards novels. But I agree that 39 points would be a bit extravagent. Althought there are series that go way beyond 10 books.

message 74: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Well, I think it's fair to get 10+ points if you had to read all the books preceding that one, but with series that have stand-alone novels you can 'cheat'.

If we divided the Discworld novels into their respective series it would be better, although still a points bargain.

message 75: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
how about they can only count if you have read all the precvious ones?

message 76: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments How about a point limit? Say book 1 - 10 gets their respective points, and every book after 10 gets 10 points, regardless of position in the series. BUT, in order to get any points, you must have read all the previous books too.

Claudia wrote: "How about a point limit? Say book 1 - 10 gets their respective points, and every book after 10 gets 10 points, regardless of position in the series. BUT, in order to get any points, you must have r..."

Or at least the previous number in any series to qualify. For example, to get a credit for Snuff you must have read book 38 in any other series and so on.

message 78: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok, so we need a new series madness thread where we collect points for books in series. The first book gets you one point the second 2 points etc. Book 11 and higher in a series gets you 10 points.
If a book isn't the first book in a series you need to have read the previous books in the series to get the points.
There is no point limit and the challenge will run from january 1 2012 untill december 31 2012. At the end of the year we we will see who has gotten the most points.
If everyone agress we can make a thread.

message 79: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I still think it's fair to get 10+ points if you read all the preceding books, since that's quite an achievement. So if you want 39 points for Snuff, you must have read books 1-38 before reading Snuff. Otherwise, you can get points according to The Watch series. If you haven't read all of those, you just get one point.

Any book read out of sync would get you one point, but if you've read all the preceding books, you get full points. However, you can't read the preceding books at a later stage.

How does that sound?

message 80: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Complicated :P

message 81: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Hmm, true.

message 82: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Although, now that I think about it, it's not really more complicated than Barbara's version; it's just that you can get more than 10 points for one book, if you read all the preceding ones. That's the only difference.

message 83: by Claudia (last edited Dec 31, 2011 12:45AM) (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Oh, yeah I see. On second thought, I like the more points idea better. The rule of reading all the previous books to get points standing.

The part about the 1 point for a book read without reading preceding titles sounded complicated - especially with something like the Terry Pratchett challenge where I might read books out of order, but eventually end up with say books 1-10 read and then not able to claim all the points. And I'd want the points =(

message 84: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith It's not that complicated. If you read book 1 and then book 3, then book 2, you get 1 point for each. If you read book 1, then book 2, then 3, you get 6 points in total.

I know it seems unfair for Pratchett, where the books don't have to be read in order, but it would be unfair for someone to just read one book and then get up to 39 points. You should be a dedicated Discworld (or other series) fan to do that.

message 85: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Full points for books read in order and 1 point for out of order. See me reading all them Pratchett books in order now, haha.

message 86: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Yep, that's much more succinct :)

You don't have to read all the books within the time frame of the challenge, but you should 'fill the gaps' to get more points.

message 87: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok so we are decided?
I'll make a new thread and we can start reading tomorrow.

I am glad you do :) Hope you don't mind we did it without your input, but it all went so quick and it would be nice to start the first day of the new year. I got all these great books lined up for this challenge so I couldn't wait.

Congrats Lauren!
LOL! I can't understand how you missed it though, but maybe that is just me :)
