Lis | 4037 comments @Mafalda - Glad you liked WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, I agree it is amazing. I pushed it on at least three other readers. She did a great job telling Jacob's story, can't wait until its released on DVD since I haven't seen the movie yet.

message 1708: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments I've been reading a few on-the-go:-
STILL on For a Few Demons More (The Hollows, #5) by Kim Harrison - it's my fault though because in one of my out-of-control moments I flicked through the book and read all the parts with Trent, now I have no incentive to keep going :(
Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1) by Juliet Marillier - completely amazing, I can't read more than 100 pages a day because of how intense it is which means I get to really savour it!
Warrior (The Blades of the Rose, #1) by Zoe Archer - why do I not love this book? It has all the elements, I can't really fault it and yet... I'm just not clicking with it.
I just finished Unearthly (Unearthly, #1) by Cynthia Hand and have the opposite "problem" - why did I like this book so much? On paper it had everything to hate but I found it so addictive! I read it in less than a day :/

Lis | 4037 comments Finally finished Burn the Night The Final Dark Days Novel by Jocelynn Drake after a couple of tries. Not sure if I was in denial that the series was ending, or if it fell a little short of my expectations.
Started working on Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night by Kresley Cole since I haven't tackled the Immortals After Dark series yet.
And starting The Darkest Passion (Lords of the Underworld, #5) by Gena Showalter next.

I've been on an HR binge. The series I've just finished is by Eloisa James, and starts with this book:

Desperate Duchesses (Desperate Duchesses, #1) by Eloisa James

And I've got more coming by the author. I can't seem to shake the HR bug.

It also doesn't help that there's nothing in UF that's calling to me atm. Although that CE Murphy series looks kind of interesting.

Hello everyone!

message 1716: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Hi Moss, been enjoying your updates and the ups & downs of HR. LOL

message 1717: by [deleted user] (new)

It's like quicksand Sandra, it's sucking me under heh. Am powerless against its pull.

Doesn't help that it's so freakin HUGE. Before I started reading in the genre I thought UF was enormous, but haha shows what I know.

Sandra | 25908 comments Well, HR has been around a whole lot longer. Have you read any Georgette Heyer or Amanda Quick? Both some of my favs.

Sandra wrote: "Well, HR has been around a whole lot longer. Have you read any Georgette Heyer or Amanda Quick? Both some of my favs."

I think I read Heyer back hen I was a teenager just discovering the lurrrve genre. I don't think I've read anything by Amanda Quick, will go check her out. Thanks :)

message 1720: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Finally finished The Winds of Dune by Brian Herbert ...LOVE Dune, and some of the new ones, but this one was hard to get into...kept putting it aside, but HAD to finish by the end of the month. Actually, last 200 pages or so really grabbed me.

Anyway, started Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep and liking it quite a bit!

message 1721: by Josie (last edited Aug 30, 2011 01:55AM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments I know how you feel, Moss! I haven't read an urban fantasy book for over a month now (apart from a free short story, Cassie Palmer #4.5). What has happened to me?? I think it was around the time I hit a bit of a reading wall which made me switch genres, mainly to YA (huh?), fantasy and the occasional PNR. I'm also on fairy-tale retellings for some reason. Tbh, it's made me really excited to read some UF again, I reckon I must've missed the swords and leather ;)

Now I need to find a great UF to bring me back, has anyone read either Personal Demons (Megan Chase, #1) by Stacia Kane , Something Secret This Way Comes (Secret McQueen #1) by Sierra Dean , Dead on the Delta (Annabelle Lee, #1) by Stacey Jay or Wicked Game (WVMP Radio, #1) by Jeri Smith-Ready ?

Josie wrote: "Now I need to find a great UF to bring me back, has anyone read either , , or ?
"

Yeah UF is just dead for me right now. The last good UF I read must have been the last Kate Daniels and nothing since.

Megan Chase book: have you read the DG series? She's got the same great kind of male lead here, same slightly unfocused heroine (wants to curl up into a ball and give up a lot), same mish-mash world that doesn't always make sense. But still pretty good.

Secret McQueen: haven't read.

Annabelle Lee: shoot me. No really, kill me now.

WWP Radio: really liked this one.

message 1723: by Josie (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Yeah sometimes it's nice to have a bit of a break.
I loved DG so that's good that you compared it to that! Oh no, Annabelle Lee was that bad?? What didn't you like about it?
And I actually own WWP Radio so I'm glad about that :)

message 1724: by [deleted user] (new)

Josie wrote: "Oh no, Annabelle Lee was that bad?? What didn't you like about it?"

Terrible writing, banal plot, deeply unsexy love triangle, weird racial stereotyping. If you're the kind that likes torturing themselves for the lolz, I'd say this is the book for you. Otherwise, no.

Just IMO of course, heh.

Yeah the Megan Chase book is good. But you have to do that thing that one has to do with Stacia Kane: don't let the details bog you down because sometimes they don't actually make any sense at all. But the hero is all kinds of yum, so I'd rec it based on his smexiness.

message 1725: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments HR and non-fic has been replacing UF at the moment. I'm currently laughing at Bonk by Mary Roach and How To Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran but I've also been reading the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas. I am no longer a Kleypas virgin and I completely understand why she's so loved. I've read 3 in a couple of weeks. Only 1 left.

message 1726: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Which ones Ames? I love LK.

message 1727: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Wallflowers: Secrets of a Summer Night (Wallflowers, #1) by Lisa Kleypas It Happened One Autumn (Wallflowers, #2) by Lisa Kleypas Devil in Winter (Wallflowers #3) by Lisa Kleypas Scandal in Spring (Wallflowers, #4) by Lisa Kleypas

I haven't read the last one yet. I'm savouring them. I was really angry at a character in book #2 but LK completely changed my mind in #3. I think I'll read The Hathaways next.

message 1728: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am dong a re-read of wallflowers #1 right now. I love Simon hunt. :). I never did read Daisy's book. I have it but I just have no desire to read it. I agree about #2. I started reading #3 minutes after I finished #2 as I could not believe that the character could be redeemed! But LK worked her magic. There is a book that takes place before wallflowers #1 Again The Magic (Wallflowers, #0.5) by Lisa Kleypas it is a fabulous book. It is about Westfliff's sister.

I agree about UF and PNR. I am only reading the series I really want to finish. I am so off UF right now. It is kind of depressing.

That's exactly how I felt. Thanks for the letting me know about the prequel, Regina.

I've read 3 UFs in the past 2 months and they all sucked. I've overdosed on PNR as a result so I'm exploring other genres for a while.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments I read Truthseeker (Worldwalker Duology #1) by C.E. Murphy just a couple of weeks ago. Really loved it!

D.G. | 2752 comments I'm reading Faefever (Fever, #3) by Karen Marie Moning Compromised by Kate Noble A Carnal Agreement by Silvia Violet .

The first is driving me bonkers with the narration, the second is full of cliches and the third is a run of the mill erotica.

Sigh...

message 1735: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments Finished The Darkest Passion (Lords of the Underworld, #5) by Gena Showalter and had to find THE DARKEST ANGEL (Lysander & Bianka's story), liked much :) PASSION not as much :(

message 1739: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok i have a question...im about to drive 3 hours to the beach and wanted a book to read...i just got the new Bloodlines (Bloodlines, #1) by Richelle Mead and was hearing that this is a spinoff of VA (well it has the same characters in it)...should i read VA first before reading this series? If so then im just going to start One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress, #6) by Jeaniene Frost because i have been dying for this to come out!

message 1740: by Monica (new)

Monica I just finished: One Grave at a Time (Night Huntress, #6) by Jeaniene Frost The Betrayal of the Blood Lily (Pink Carnation, #6) by Lauren Willig

Now Reading: Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger

message 1741: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments I've been in one of those ruts, although I guess the last book I finished was only a couple days ago, haha, so not too bad, just seems like forever.

Read Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson which was pretty good, the cover popped out at me, and now I want to read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson , since so many people enjoy it.

Then I tried continuing Masques (Sianim, #1) by Patricia Briggs , started Claimed By Shadow (Cassandra Palmer, #2) by Karen Chance , picked up Midnight Riot (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch and listening to The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness . I liked all of them but just can't stick with anything, so resorting to some re-reads.

Re-reading Mark of the Demon (Kara Gillian, #1) by Diana Rowland to see if I still love it, plus it fits the bingo shelf and listening to Destined for an Early Grave (Night Huntress, #4) by Jeaniene Frost , I was curious about the audios for the series and my library has this one. The voice of Bones is a little over the top, but I think I can live with it. Maybe it'll get me ready for book 6.
