Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Cali, I'm really enjoying it! I think it's the best one so far. Few things I'm on the fence about (view spoiler), there are some new supes in this one, which is fun and we continue to learn a bit more about Jane/Beast.

You should give it a go. Maybe it'll reinvigorate the series for ya. :)

Sandra | 25908 comments Finished Marked (Eternal Guardians, #1) by Elisabeth Naughton and it was full of greek mythology but set in contemp times. Interesting. Looking forward to the next one.

Reading Hunted By The Others (H&W Investigations, #1) by Jess Haines and I know this one got mixed reviews when it came out. So far the story is good, however, the heroine is pretty wimpy. Certainly doesn't live up to the cover. LOL.

Glad I didn't buy it this weekend then! I did carry Demonfire around for a little while, but it didn't survive the weeding out process. LOL.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL! I got the eBook free, thankfully, from one of Amazon's freebie weeks. It wasn't terrible, just kinda flat overall. :\

Mercy Blade ROCKED though!

I'm about 40% thru Killbox (Sirantha Jax, #4) by Ann Aguirre and enjoying it so far.

Karin Elisabeth (goodreadscomkarinelisabeth) | 151 comments I'm reading Big Bad Beast (Pride, #6) by Shelly Laurenston and I love it. It had me laughing out loud several times and though the romance is, shall I say a little subtle, it's overall what I expect of Laurenston - a lot of fun.

Just finishing up with Night Life (Nocturne City, #1) by Caitlin Kittredge . Didn't love it, but was an okay read over the last couple of nights.

message 1162: by Trevor (new)

Trevor Hi Everyone! New member here, actually completely new to goodreads.com altogether so if there are any tips let me know. I was looking into some new books because I seem to have dried up my collection. If you check me out you will notice I LOVED WoT, Misborn, Eragon, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Ender's Game, Stormlight Archive - the Way of Kings, and now A Song of Ice and Fire (If they ever get that last book out...) I would love to hear some recommendations from the rest of you as to other books I may enjoy (epic fantasy w/magic). I have looked online and seen a ton, I am considering The Book Of Amber, Malazan Book of the Fallen, Name of the Wind, Farseer, or Dark Tower. Let me know if I am way off base base on what I read online or if you have some lesser known books that are better. My preference is series that are complete or will be complete soon because I will blaze through these books and hate being left waiting. Thanks!

I don't understand why it's taken me so long to get to her. She's terrific, and I'm not experiencing any of the first-book-isn't-so-great feeling which a lot of my GR friends warned me about. Yay! I love it when I find a new series to obsess over.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Welcome Trevor!

I'm a big fan of Michelle Sagara West's Sun Sword Series. It is complete. Currently she is writing another series called the House Wars set in the same universe and focusing on some of the same characters.

The Broken Crown (The Sun Sword, # 1) by Michelle Sagara West The Uncrowned King (The Sun Sword, #2) by Michelle Sagara West The Shining Court (The Sun Sword, #3) by Michelle Sagara West Sea of Sorrows (The Sun Sword, #4) by Michelle Sagara West The Riven Shield (The Sun Sword, #5) by Michelle Sagara West The Sun Sword (The Sun Sword, #6) by Michelle Sagara West

The Hidden City (The House War, #1) by Michelle Sagara West City of Night (The House War, #2) by Michelle Sagara West House Name (The House War, #3) by Michelle Sagara West

There is a duology that precedes the Sun Sword series, but it is not absolutely necessary to read first.

Hunter's Oath (The Sacred Hunt, #1) by Michelle Sagara West Hunter's Death (The Sacred Hunt, #2) by Michelle Sagara West

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments @ Kerstin, have you read other de Lint or was this your first? I keep trying to figure out which one of his to start first. I couldn't stand the first book in Kalayna Price's other series Once Bitten (Haven, #1) by Kalayna Price , but I have heard really good stuff about this series so I can't wait to see what you think.

I just finished Midnight Riot (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch which was really good.
I am listening to The Good, the Bad, and the Undead (The Hollows, #2) by Kim Harrison reading The Deadliest Bite (Jaz Parks, #8) by Jennifer Rardin and also reading Trace of Fever (Men Who Walk the Edge of Honor, #2) by Lori Foster . I am just in a slump, after this week (both Deadliest Bite and trace of fever are netgalleys), I am going to re-evaluate my reading list. I need to switch things up. Nothing is grabbing me.

message 1175: by Kerstin (last edited May 20, 2011 06:04PM) (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments @ Sandra: I'm not too far into Grave Witch yet, but so far I do enjoy it. I'll keep you updated!

@ Regina: This was my second book by De Lint and I really enjoyed it. Eyes Like Leaves was the other one I read, but I didn't like it at all. The writing was not that great and the characters not very memorable, but it was one of his earliest works, and not his preferred genre (fantasy, when he is apparently at his best with UF/contemporary fantasy).
I've heard that his Newford series is a great place to start Dreams Underfoot (Newford, #1) by Charles de Lint . Unfortunately my library doesn't have it though :(

Lis | 4037 comments Finished my Kitty series, finally got thru Kitty's House of Horrors (Kitty Norville, #7) by Carrie Vaughn after over a month of trying... I also read Kitty Goes to War (Kitty Norville, #8) by Carrie Vaughn for a challenge and it was back on the Kitty track for me & pretty good. Read it in a day, so I'll probably read the new release later this year.
Also finished up the Elemental Assasin series Venom (Elemental Assassin, #3) by Jennifer Estep and Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, #4) by Jennifer Estep which was a great recommendation I pulled from several of your comments... Thx!! and currently listening to Wizard's First Rule (Sword of Truth, #1) by Terry Goodkind

I need to get started on my TBR shelf cleaning and I have a collection of LA Banks' Vampire Huntress, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Rardin's Jaz Park series and Galenorn's Sisters of the Moon... Any recommendations as to which is the best one to tackle next???

message 1179: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Thanks Kerstin!

@ Lis, I have only read Dresden Files and Jaz Parks of the four series you mention. I love the Dresden Files, just be prepared that the first 2 are mediocre, 3 is maybe a 3.5 star book, but 4+ are freaking fantastic.

message 1180: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Ladies I am in a slump. It kinda started when I was sick at the beginning of April, but I think I need to take a break from UF books. I always mix in fantasy, classics non-fictions and literary genre type books but I think I am just going to read those for the next month or so until I get my groove back. :( I am not even excited to read Magic Slays, that shows you the depth of my slump!

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 1237 comments Slumps are always rough! I finally got over mine. Started reading more YA and UF books and less PnR and Erotica. Worked for me. Now I'm mixing it up more and I'm not getting burned out on any particular type!

Last week I read Tomcat Jones (cute M/M book with a cat shifter familiar), Deadly Nightshade (M/M thriller), Hexbound (LOVE this series!), and Indulgent: An Eternal Pleasure Novel (fun read with werewolves, vampires, witches, demons, and panther shifters)

So far this year I have read 23 YA books (all are either PnR or UF), 25 PnR or UF Erotica books, 10 other Erotica books, and 4 other UF books.

Since I have an entire 5 shelf bookcase of TBR PnR and UF books.....I am hoping that the challenges here will help me focus on those a little more. And if I'm involved in challenges here, maybe I can resist some of the swap games on PBS......maybe.....it's the only way I'll finally get to read all those books I have that I've been collecting over the last 3 years.

SIGH........

I actually preferred Horrors over War in the Kitty series but only because Cormac wasn't Cormac for me anymore. I'm glad you enjoyed the Elemental Assassin series. I'm really looking forward to the next one. Wizard's First Rule was only okay for me, same with the TV series, Legend of the Seeker but they sort of complimented each other.

message 1185: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I've been battling a migraine over the past week. The past few hours have been the best I've felt in a while so I tried reading a couple of short stories Zachary Zombie and the Lost Boy, A Story for Demented Children and The Emo Bunny That Should: A Story For Demented Children by the same author. Both were free Kindle reads. They're sort of weird fairy tales. I quite liked them.

If my wellness holds out then I'm hoping to start A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin and finish The Iron Hunt (Hunter Kiss, #1) by Marjorie M. Liu Immortalis Carpe Noctem (Immortalis, #1) by Katie Salidas

message 1187: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Kerstin - glad you liked Grave Witch (Alex Craft, #1) by Kalayna Price . I loved the book, and looking forward to the next one which comes out in July!

Regina - I totally understand the UF burn-out. I haven't completed a non-UF/PNR book in a month and need to get out of the genre for a little too.

message 1188: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments Regina, sorry to hear you're in a slump. I felt a bit like that earlier this year as well and I started mixing up my genres a bit more than usual and I'm back on track now.

Thanks for your soemthing everyone, I do think abstaining from new UF books (outside of series) is what I will do right now. I want to come bounce back quickly.

I keep pushing Cast in Chaos back, but I have to get on the ball soon. Ruin is coming out in September.

The Sun Sword series has a very different feel. Lots of court politics, mysterious characters with long game plans played out over all 6 books, sympathetic bad guys ... hmmm, so far it sounds kind of similar. LOL. It really does have a different feel to it.

message 1192: by Literary Ames (last edited May 23, 2011 03:31PM) (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments @Steph, Immortalis is just okay so far but then I stopped reading as it was getting interesting so I'm hoping it gets better.

@Regina, thanks. I'm much better than I was and I can read again and that's what matters. Hopefully I'll be 100% again soon. I've started Clash of Kings and I can all ready see why everyone has had a problem getting through it.

@Daffodil, Chaos was a big book and a bit too long, IMO but I can't wait for Kaylin to meet the Dragon Emperor. I don't accept this "she's not ready, she needs etiquette lessons" crap. I mean, he can hardly eat her for bad manners when she's so important to everyone's survival. I'm also waiting for some romance. Considering it's a Harlequin series there should be romance, right?

message 1193: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4037 comments @ Regina - Thanks for the feedback... after next weeks new releases I think me and Harry have a month of dates... and I hope your slump is very short lived.

@Ames - I am looking forward to the new release of the Elemental Assasins series too. Wizards First Rule is Ok to dragging. And good luck with Clash of Kings, I admit I cheated a little when I read and passed the boring characters and read the Dany and Arya chapters first, then went back and read the rest. It was long but good. I hope your migraine is over soon, I had my 3 day turn last weekend! I discovered that a local wine was my trigger this time which really stinks. Let me know how you liked Iron Hunt, that is on my stack to read.

message 1194: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited May 23, 2011 06:39PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I recently finished Immortalis Carpe Noctem (Immortalis, #1) by Katie Salidas (an ok start to a DUF), An Enchanted Season (Includes Psy-Changeling, #3.5; Murphy Sisters, #1) by Maggie Shayne (ok overall, but 4★ Psy-Changeling story) and Mercy Burns (Myth and Magic, #2) by Keri Arthur (decent PNR about dragons, I just really prefer her UFs, I think).

I just started Ascension (Dark Breed, #1) by Sable Grace and already like Kyana. :)

message 1195: by [deleted user] (new)

@Regina, hope you come out of the slump soon. You need a palate cleanser! Can I recommend Import Competition and Response (National Bureau of Economic Research Conference Report) by Jagdish Bhagwati as the book most likely to send you screaming back to UF for relief? This fantastic snorefest snapped me out of my last reading funk.

@Ames, hope you feel better soon too! A week-long migraine sounds very draining.

Martin Cinderella Ate My Daughter Dispatches from the Frontlines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture by Peggy Orenstein

I'll be back. :)
