Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I'm jealous ... still waitin' on my copy of Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11) by Charlaine Harris and Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #4) by Chloe Neill to arrive. Enjoy!

I'm still reading and enjoying Demon Song (Blood Singer, #3) by Cat Adams between naps.

Sandra | 25908 comments Yay! My copy of Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, #4) by Jennifer Estep came today. Boo! I haven't got time to read it, cause I've got a ton of books to read for a challenge that ends mid month. Why do I do this to myself?

Sandra | 25908 comments Started Dark Protector (Paladins of Darkness, #1) by Alexis Morgan this afternoon, after I finished This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress, #5) by Jeaniene Frost which I gave 5 stars.

:\ Poor thing! I know you've been so looking forward to that one too. Hopefully you can speed read the challenge ones and get to it soon. Or maybe sprinkle in short reads of it throughout the others. :)

I'm interested to hear how you like Paladins when you're done.

You won't regret it Vivian, it's just wonderful. I'm so pleased there's a second book, and I haven't landed myself into a first-and-only book situation.

message 1109: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am really dragging with the audio book I am listening to -- Elantris by Brandon Sanderson , I think the world building is amazing and the idea is great, but it is way too long and taking forerever. I am listening to the story on 2X and it is still too long. I have some continuing education credits I need to watch/listen to on the web and right now I am enjoying listening to that while I work more!

I am still reading:
Midnight Riot (Peter Grant, #1) by Ben Aaronovitch A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R.R. Martin A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan , I am enjoying all of them even though they are completely different from each other. :) Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11) by Charlaine Harris is waiting for me at the library -- so I am glad I didn't buy it. I ended up cancelling my pre-order for Hard Bitten, since I am reading so much right now and then have a bunch of netgalleys coming up, so I thought I would wait to buy it.

message 1110: by CyberAlmu (new)

CyberAlmu | 302 comments Just finished Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #2) by J.R. Ward (Spanish translation, the swearing was awfully translated by the way. I'll re-read it when I get my copy in English). It was so good, I started it yesterday evening and didn't put it down until I finished. I didn't even get any sleep. Don't know the idiom in English but, in Spanish, I'm a sick person.

I loved the HEA ending!! So sweet, so beautiful. It made my cry like a baby!!

I got a lot of goodies from the library ( Abandon (Abandon Trilogy #1) by Meg Cabot Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis Wicked Becomes You by Meredith Duran Recovery Road by Blake Nelson The Unbearable Lightness of Dragons (Light Dragons, #2) by Katie MacAlister ) & I'm hoping I'll be able to start one when my finals are over.

Yeah I've often wondered how all that gangsta stuff gets translated into different languages. Does it get interepreted into local idiom, or do they try and translate it word-by-word?

Sounds like a good library Lethal, lucky you. Good Luck with Finals!

message 1114: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Thank you very much, Sandra! ☺ My library sucks when it comes to erotic romances/paranormal romances but they've been on their A-game lately ordering YA books.

message 1115: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited May 04, 2011 10:53PM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Lethal, I'm interested to hear what you think of Cabot's Abandon, when you read it. Good luck w/finals!

I've finally finished Demon Song and really enjoyed it. Now, I'm off to choose what's next. Probably Hexbound (Dark Elite, #2) by Chloe Neill or Killer Insight (Psychic Eye Mystery, #4) by Victoria Laurie .

I just started Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie on audio. The narrator sounds like she's 10 yrs old. But, I've literally just started, so I may get used to it. Since it's a YA bk, I guess it fits.

message 1116: by CyberAlmu (last edited May 05, 2011 12:35AM) (new)

CyberAlmu | 302 comments @Moss: you can find both things in the same book. You get some idioms, and some direct translations, and I don't know which one is worse. The idioms in this particular book sound as if XIXc people were talking, EVEN the humans. Very old-fashioned. It makes it sound really "poetic" We don't speak like that.

On the other hand, the direct translations in swearing you understand aswell, but it just doesn't sound natural. You see, in Spain we curse a lot hehehe it's a fact. And, ok, the main meaning of "damn" is "maldición" but, again, saying something like that sounds very, very old-fashioned. There's also "hell", which is actually translated as "demonios/diablos" as in "what the hell..."/"Qué demonios... ." Again, people usually don't speak like that, it sounds old-fashioned, but we understand.

There is also this whole lot of expressions there's in Enligh with "god" that we don't have and are translated directly. Ok, is not that we don't have them is just that we use other things to express the same meaning.

This is the usual language we deal with when we get something translated (which, including tv shows and movies, and such is more than 50% of the total, I'm guessing.)

The thing with translation, at least English-Spanish, is that translators usually focus on translating words, not meaning. SO we end up with chunks of texts that make no sense or that sound alien. Reason why I stopped reading in Spanish. As a translator, I can't. It makes me sick.

P.S I hope to offend no one with this post. Swear words are just words, it's nothing to be afraid of, just a word. We use words to express thoughts and feelings, and if these type of words are useful to that purpose, why not use them?

message 1117: by [deleted user] (new)

That's so interesting. I suppose from a sociological POV it's also worth noting that a lot of the language is very specifically American slang, so there's the double problem of the language translation, as well as all the cultural references (probably about 99% of our tv programming here in NZ is from the US, but even I had to google 'shitkickers' the first time I read a BDB book. Just in case, you know, there was a literal application of the word I hadn't heard of...)

Hm..so what's the appeal of these books when they're translated? Presumably people still read them and enjoy them, but if the translations come through sounding archaic and clumsy, what draws people to them? Is it purely the chemistry between the protagonists? Or the world-building? Or a mix of the two?

message 1118: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments I was going to say the same thing Inga. There would be plenty of people who either don't read english or don't feel confident enough and therefore prefer their native language.

Shame on you Moss not knowing 'shitkickers'. LOL. Even when I was a teenager, long, long ago that one was used by 'bad' kids. LOL.

message 1119: by [deleted user] (new)

Sandra wrote: "Shame on you Moss not knowing 'shitkickers'. LOL. Even when I was a teenager, long, long ago that one was used by 'bad' kids. LOL..."

Hehe. Well I thought I knew what they were, but when Ward kept referring to them again and again (and again) in her books, I started wondering if they had some other meaning that were significant to vampires in some way. It was the repetition-- it made me think they were important for a reason other than the obvious. But as it turns out, shitkickers are just shitkickers.

I guess that's good news for those authors then, that even if their work isn't translated all that successfully, their stories still carry enough power that people will read them regardless :)

Does anyone remember babelfish? It used to spit out the most hilarious translations of things. I'd love to put in a passage from a BDB book to be translated into Japanese or something, and see what it looks like when it re-emerges as English.

message 1120: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Hehe, I used to use try using babelfish to help with my Spanish papers in high school...didn't work too well. Even with my lack of Spanish skills, I knew it was wrong, lol.

message 1122: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Just finished Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #4) by Chloe Neill . I'm in shock with the ending. The entire book was a solid 3*s, the usual witty banter and all that, but not much happening. Then came the last few chapters. Holy moley, I can't believe all that went down...that was a 5* ending right there. Darn the wait for the next book!

message 1123: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments I just finished The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, #3) by Philip Pullman and really enjoyed the entire series. This last book in the trilogy was the best in opinion.

I'm starting on Eyes Like Leaves by Charles de Lint , as I have heard a lot of good things about the author and my library actually had a couple of his books.

message 1124: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments @Sandra, Lookin' forward to hearing your thoughts on it. Hope it lives up. :)

@Vivian, does it have a cliffhanger or just a great last bit? At least #5 is due in Nov! :D

It is translated into German - sort of; now I don't mind "strong" words in English and I simply adore this special book, but when I tried the German translation - no, I would never have considered to read another book in the series!

CyberAlmu | 302 comments I'm reading Song of Scarabaeus (Scarabaeus, #1) by Sara Creasy but I'm not liking it. Definitely Sci-fi it's not my thing. I'll finish it anyway, I have it for 3 challenges.

I also started Club Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #3) by Charlaine Harris , which is going good for now.

But...
I'm really angry right now, bc I read a huge BDB spoiler, involving Tohr... so I'm going to get through the series (#6 onwards), so there won't be any more spoilers.

message 1141: by Josie (last edited May 12, 2011 04:24PM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Oh man that's annoying. That happened to me also, probably the same spoiler. It was at the end of either Dark Lover or Lover Eternal and there was an advertisement for the BDB Insider's Guide or something and basically had it in big writing (view spoiler). Kind of made me want to rip the damn page out though >:(

I've been reading a lot of PNR recently for some reason. First some Psy-Changeling, then today A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, #2) by Kresley Cole which I loved and read basically all in one go :)

message 1144: by [deleted user] (new)

The Yellowrock series is high on my TBR list, Steph, have been hearing some good things about it.

@Josie: that book is one of my guiltiest pleasures, and I always end up sneaking back to it in moments of travail. Yay that you loved it!
