I think it might be the pressure I put on myself to read too may challenges, and not enough me books. Although I'm better at picking books for challenges, they then become work not play.

I said I was going to do less challenges this year but I've already finished 18 with another to finish today. There are too many good challenges out there.

I'm hoping April will be better, although I've already signed up for a lot of challenges, I've got less challenge books to read. Typically I'd have about 26 books, I think for April I've got 17. So we'll see.

message 803: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Sandra that is my problem. I don't enroll in challenges, but I have lists going out 4 months of what I will read in a certain month, so in a way it is a challenge. And I get the lists by trolling through my shelves labeled, owned but not read, series to contiue, priority -- and others. But recently, I feel frustrated with my lists. Hmmmmm, I may have to free up my lists. I had been doing them to make sure I read stuff that I wanted to and didn't just get distracted.

18 is alot of challenges!

Desperado (lethallovely) | 1360 comments Currently Reading: Falls the Shadow (Welsh Princes, #2) by Sharon Kay Penman
So far, so good. I've always been fascinated by Simon de Montfort & Penman's portray of him doesn't disappoint. I'm also enjoying reading about Henry III & the "Welsh Princes."

Starting: Seven Nights to Forever by Evangeline Collins
This book is highly recommended by my friends & since I adore courtesan heroines, why not? I hear that the hero is Beta. That could go very well for me or very badly. I love Beta heroes if they are well written (like James in Judith Ivory's Sleeping Beauty (Avon Romantic Treasure) by Judith Ivory ) but not many are. Being a Beta male does NOT make you a spineless wimp. Some authors need to remember that.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments @Regina ~ The double speed is going well. Sometimes I forget to reset it to "faster" when I come back from a pause. I've gotten used to the voices at the faster speed. It's not Alvin (Chipmunk) fast, but it's definitely helpful when you don't wanna have the book reading dragged out.

@Regina & Sandra ~ I'm feeling a bit book bummed too. I felt like I had too many *gasp* challenges going. Then, in a weak moment I joined BDB's quarterly, which was a blast to fill, but has 25 bks. LOL! Oh well.

I try to limit my monthly challenge reads to 10, if possible with lots of cross challenge bks. Then I can fill the rest of the month with those I randomly pick up. So far, that's working out okay. I typically read 15-20 bks a month and so far this month I've read 18.

There are definitely times when I would like to read one series all the way to the current release. So, I can understand the draw there.

Hope you're not getting burnt out on the genre. But, I can understand why people can. Lots of Me, Tarzan - You, Jane and/or supe overload. LOL! Nice to work in a "normal" H/h now and again.

I love the Me Tarzan - You Jane bit. Never get tired of that!

I'll have to run away now, thunderstorm about to hit.

I thought the book was pretty good and would definitely recommend it :) Fun, fresh take on werewolves. I think the only minus for me was the love triangle.

message 810: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments That's good to hear, Vivian. I've got it sittin' on my shelf TBR very soon. Though -- boo, another love triangle. :P

message 811: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments It's part of the YA formula :/

message 812: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Certainly seems to be.

message 813: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments OK, finished Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole and really enjoyed it, 4 stars, this is the vampire & ghost one.

message 814: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments My thoughts exactly...eek, another love triangle....

message 815: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments But aren't they all/mostly love triangles if its YA. Just cause of Twilight of course. If it worked there it will keep on working, won't it? hahahahahaha

message 816: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Get a new idea....pleeeeaaaase! LOL!

message 817: by CyberAlmu (new)

CyberAlmu | 302 comments I've just finished Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews , which I really enjoyed, especially the setting and the world's background!

Looking forward to reading the next one!

I'll be reading for a while Shifters series, from Rogue (Shifters, #2) by Rachel Vincent onwards.

The bad thing about love triangles is that I get really annoyed with her, because it's obvious she is making the wrong decission! I'm always for the poor discarded guy

message 818: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Lol CA. Me too.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments I feel you all. I am constantly falling for the best friend in books, movies and TV.

message 820: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Yeah, I feel like in books I fall for the practical guy -- something I never did in real life. What a silly twist. Although, there are some series where the character chooses the best option or the practical guy -- Mercy Thompson is an example of that.

message 821: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments @ Steph -- maybe it is just the time of year? If we are all feeling in a semi-slump.

message 822: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Crikey. Don't come on GR for a day and look what ya miss!

@Josie -The early start was due to panic. I was having new carpets fitted in multiple rooms (stupid, stupid, stupid) and had to move all my sh-I mean stuff- out of them. I never realised I had so much! My muscles and back are still aching from it. About Forbidden, it's time to pamper yourself. Steal some of Sandra's chocolate and splash out on a HEA book or watch a happy movie. Comedy is your friend.

@Sandra & Regina -Sometimes it's best to have some time away from books. I'm hearing gasps from you all but occasionally necessary, especially when feeling pressure from challenges. That's why I rarely participate in month-long ones now which leaves me some wiggle room to read I what I want to. Changing genres like Regina suggested is good too, I tend to go for shorties or LOLs to put me back in the mood.

I'm reading Outlander next month. I need to meet this Jamie bloke everyone's talking about.

As soon as I heard Nightshade was banned somewhere I knew I had to read it. Just haven't got to it yet.

And Sandra, I'm glad you liked Dark Deeds. I'm feeling better about approaching that book now.

message 823: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments Also, Song of Scarabaeus (Scarabaeus, #1) by Sara Creasy , when I first saw the little cover icon I thought someone was um, performing a sex act and immediately clicked on it for a closer look (I know I'm a perv) and they weren't but then noticed the "Never submit" on it with the woman kneeling? below the man. Major contradiction!

message 824: by Josie (last edited Mar 30, 2011 07:16PM) (new)

Josie | 1967 comments Lol Ames! Now you've pointed it out, that'll keep jumping in my head everytime I look at that cover...

@Regina: I'm not feeling the slump at the moment but my reading does go in cycles, a couple of weeks of constant reading and then nothing for a while, so I kind of know how you feel.

And Nightshade was banned? What on earth for (since I haven't read it yet)? I remember reading the blurb ages ago and I can't think there was anything so bad it needed banning :S

@Ames: Hope the carpets all went ok! And that your back feels better soon.
Lol, the next day I ended up reading The Mating by Nicky Charles which I gave 3 and a half stars to, watched Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (again) because I knew it was a happy film, and just finished Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1) by Simone Elkeles which made me smile. I gave that 4stars. So it's all good now :D

message 825: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Thanks for cheering me up Ames! Hope you are enjoying the new carpets :D

I did watch some stuff on tv I'd saved, needed to as I was running outta room for new stuff, LOL. Plus I finished my absolute had to's for challenges and I've read some short sci-fis, so I feel better too!

message 826: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Regina wrote: "@ Steph -- maybe it is just the time of year? If we are all feeling in a semi-slump."

Maybe. Hard to say. Hopefully we'll all pull out of it soon. :)

@Ames, I'm working my way through Outlander on audio. Definitely not something I'd normally read. I'm only 30% in, but it's not bad. Waiting for the "ah-ha" moment when I feel everyone's love for it.

Which Nightshade was banned? Michelle Rowen's or Andrea Cremer's?

LOL! (cover reaction) It does look like that, yah? Too funny.

message 827: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments Nightshade was banned? Couldn't find any info about it. Anyone know any details?

message 828: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Dunno. Just going by Ames post comment "As soon as I heard Nightshade was banned somewhere I knew I had to read it. Just haven't got to it yet." Not sure which one or why.

message 829: by [deleted user] (new)

@Ames, how'd you score new carpets dude? I want in. Hah, nice spotting with the contradictory caption vs dopey girl arm-humping his fatigues.

I was trying to work out why I liked his expression so much and then it hit me-- Blue Steel! Aww yeah.

Just finished Song of Scarabaeus (Scarabaeus, #1) by Sara Creasy . Oh the world-building was soooo good, and the writing was sooo good, but the girl was such a Mary Sue. I don't know if I loved it for the former or meh it for the latter. Think think think....

@Regina and Steph, I hear you on the reading fatigue. Maybe a break in genre? Something light and fruity by PG Wodehouse for a little rest in between the lovefests? I myself am flagging just the eensiest bit on the PNRs. Something about how the same storyline just keeps magically appearing.

message 830: by Steph, Serious series addict (last edited Mar 31, 2011 02:42AM) (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments LOL! "I don't know if I loved it for the former or meh it for the latter. Think think think.... " I'm very interested to read #2 and see where Sara takes them. The world - superb!

Eh, not sure what my deal-o is. I'm a PNR/UF goddess and never had genre burnout, but .... there's always a first for everything, right? Maybe. Dunno.

Finished Biting the Bullet (Jaz Parks, #3) by Jennifer Rardin and it wasn't bad or great, for me. Would totally rock if it were a TV show!

Almost done with Betrayals (Strange Angels, #2) by Lilith Saintcrow and even though Dru can, at times, be your typical teenager, I love her internal dialogue. She cracks me up. Plus, I dig the supe mixes, it's an interesting twist on the vamp/were mythology. Light, quick read too, which never hurts for an EOM read.

message 831: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments New carpets are good. Tax rebate paid for them. Back is feeling better, I'm just tired now. Happy to help, Sandra.

Nightshade (Nightshade, #1) by Andrea Cremer was banned because the author had the audacity to publicly speak out against censorship in relation to Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson because some idiot classed the rape as pornography. I've read Speak. He is wrong. There's nothing pornographic about it. It actually made me quite angry that he'd want to ban it when it tackles such a sensitive subject in a positive way that has the potential to help or inspire those (YA) that read it.

By supporting Anderson's book Cremer became a target. Her gay werewolves and arranged marriages are the "official" reasons for the ban.

To even think about banning 'Speak' is disgusting. Listening to the poem should prove that.
Thanks for the links Ames.

What makes it worse is that the Idiot is a professor at at Missouri State University so he can't claim ignorance as an excuse.

message 836: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Vey cool! Gay werewolves for teenagers. My 17 year old niece is out publicly and loves to read, I feel bad bc there probably isn't alot she can connect with in the romantic realm. Maybe this is a book I should suggest to her. Once again banners earn publicity for books!

Anyone know of YA books that have female gay leads or characters?

message 837: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Thanks for the links, Ames. What craziness! It's absurd. Kudos to Cremer for supporting it.

Sandra, alien menage, huh? Very interesting. ;)

Regina, I can't think of any, but will let ya know if I find some. I read Luna, but the main character was a transgendered male.

message 838: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (_vivian) | 1934 comments There's a lesbian friend in the Hex Hall series. She's not really a focus in the first two, but there may be more attention on her in the third book.

message 839: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Sorry, Regina I haven't come across any lesbian characters in my reading.

Now reading Storm Glass (Glass, #1) by Maria V. Snyder for Bingo & Fantasy Baseball and a few others.

Awesomevegan (AKA JenReads) (awesomevegan) | 468 comments There is some f/f romance in The Kiesha'ra Series by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. I don't want to go into much detail because of spoilers. The books are available as a bind-up of the whole series in paper and on Kindle as a single file. I bought mine on Kindle. It is a YA series about shape shifters of different types. It begins with Hawksong (The Kiesha'ra, #1) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes .

Malinda Lo would be an author to check out. Ash is supposed to be a lesbian retelling of Cinderella. She's written a few other things to.

message 842: by Jackie M (new)

Jackie M | 695 comments I just started Lover Unleashed (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #9) by J.R. Ward .

message 843: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 1854 comments I loved Hawksong, I must continue with that series and I own Ash but haven't read it yet.

Finished GhosTV (PsyCop, #6) by Jordan Castillo Price . I'm a bit annoyed there isn't another one out yet. This author has knack for setting up "almost" cliffhangers although Secrets did actually end mid-scene. It's been a very interesting ride reading these books and seeing Vic grow and attempt to overcome his personal issues, control his abilities and deal with "big brother" but I have no idea when the next one will be released :(

message 844: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Lookin' forward to your review of it, Jackie. I am waiting to start it. I want to listen to the audiobook again. Love that series on audio! ;)

I read Eternal Hunger (Mark of the Vampire #1) by Laura Wright and while I enjoyed it, there were lots of deja vu'y moments. Similarities to other series. Not really sure how to rate it. Goin' w/3.5★ for now, we'll see how I feel when I finally get around to writing up my review. I'm SOOOO far behind on my reviews. Augh! :\

I had decided to read Blood Law (Alexandra Sabian, #1) by Jeannie Holmes next, but held off starting it. Going to wait until I shuffle shelves and see what pops up for Bingo.

Next shelf will be announced today!

message 845: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments I finished Stolen A letter to my captor by Lucy Christopher and it was a really good book, even though I didn't succumb to Stockholm Syndrome as so many others.

I will start on Blood Maidens by Barbara Hambly next.

message 846: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Glad that Stockholm Syndrome didn't get ya Kerstin! LOL

Finally started that wayward library book Shades of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #7) by Lara Adrian It's set in Alaska, and I'm feeling colder just reading it.

message 847: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments I keep on meaning to start that series Sandra. Would you recommend bumping it up on my TBR list?

message 848: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Yep, it is a similiar concept to BDB, so if you like them you'll like these.

message 849: by Kerstin (new)

Kerstin | 862 comments Oh, I love BDB! Thanks, Sandra :)

message 850: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Kerstin I didn't either. I liked it but I never found the kidnapper to be appealing. He was always just a kidnapper to me who stole her freedom.
