I'm glad you like Pettigrew, Elaine. I have to read it for a f2f group next month.

i think you will enjiy it, I noticed from some of the posts on different discussions that we have read similar books. AI just wanted to say that I have been a member of this group for about a month now. I really am enjoying it and read this months book read. It is wonderful to talk about books. I work from home now and miss the daily interaction with coworkers to talk about books. Thank you! This imart an anser to i think deborahs post that people do not talk much in this group. It seems to me quite chatty so far. I think alot of people are quiet because they just are afraid to say something silly...Oh well :)
I'm glad you are enjoying BNC, Elaine. :) As to posting, I would tell lurkers, just jump right on in. You will find it fun. We don't take things too seriously here.
@Elaine -- I hope I can assure people that we don't give grades here. So if someone says something "silly" we will all just be silly together. It's supposed to be fun.
@ Elaine, There's no one here sillier than me! One thing about this group, no one takes ourselves too seriously, and we all love to laugh and tease with one another. Some of us have been on line friends for quite a while, so we get to know each other's personality, and what makes us laugh, or cringe. I'm also not "out in the world' much, as I have Parkinson's Disease, so I understand how you miss people to chat with. Jump in! We always enjoy additions tot he conversations, and OH! Where those conversations take us!

One of the things I love most about this group -- even though some of the members have known each other for a long time, it is one of the most welcoming groups I've seen. No cliques here. :-)
Right back at you guys. :)You've brought a great deal to the group and we are most happy to have you around.

On one level it's a light read, full of endearing characters. On a deeper level, there are some quite profound messages in it.
Connie, I agree with you about the merits of Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I have hesitated to recommend it for my book group discussion because of its sweet, light, comic tone, but I know we would enjoy the discussion. I certainly enjoyed reading it!
I realize that I am in a small minority - I did not like the characters in Major Pettigrew (annoying, stereotypical, or unpleasant or all three), found it very slow-moving, rambling, and too descriptive. I abandoned it after it put me to sleep two nights in a row, something that rarely happens to me.

I started it last night. I've only read a handful of pages. I have my doubts that this is my type of book, but I am going to give it 50 pages since it is for a f2f group.

They all changed and opened themselves to people and possibilities that their previous stereotypes would never have conceived of. That's one of the things I liked best about the book.

Well, you know my "abandonment issues". LOL If a book does not engage me within 50 pages, it is history. I do not have the time or patience to wait for this kind of progression, especially if a book initially bores me.

Thanks for sharing that, Connie. Did your group have any other insights?
I am on page 40 now and getting into it. It took me a chapter or so to get the characters straight. I already like the Major and his dry sense of wit. :)

Well, you know my "abando..."
JoAnn.....
I completely agree with you about putting a book aside that doesn't interest me. Last year I probably stopped reading more books than I finished reading!! Life's too short to read "drek" - that's been my motto for years!

And I know that one man's drek is another one's treasure!
and Wow part 2. Vanessa, if in fact you stayed around here you would learn that sometimes we disagree with each other but we are still a group some of whom know each other for a long time. So -- we are LONG past the post that you are referring to. And if there were any bad feelings that were in existence at that time it is way over.
I think our disagreements help make this group interesting when they are done in a respectful manner, which they almost always are. If everyone agreed on everything, it would be pretty boring - what's to discuss? And as stated on several threads, if I remember correctly (about the multiple threads), we generally just agree to disagree.
Venessa wrote: "TO THE ONE WHO WHINED......"That would be I, and my post certainly was not nearly as rude as yours. Nor was it whiny...it was b*^&hy (and ticked off) as I stated in advance! LOL I just stated facts that I derived from my research and then commented on those stats.
And please, please, please.....punish us all by not posting.
Marialyce wrote: "JoAnn, you are so funny!Who is this person? Never saw her here ever before."
She is a non-poster who dropped in to give us her pearls of wisdom. hahaha
Venessa wrote: "TO THE ONE WHO WHINED...WOW, nothing like a rude and IMO unfair comment to get someone to post!!! I DONT read as much as i would like too...i BUY many many books ( maybe this is my addiction more ..."----------------------
Venessa, your first post to this board was totally inappropriate and will not be tolerated. Therefore it was deleted. If it happens again you will be removed from the group and reported to GoodReads.
The guidelines for the group are posted and we expect everyone to follow them.
GUIDELINES:
We want everyone to have fun here, so here are a few guidelines that must be followed:
Treat other members courteously, as though you were a guest in their home.
Nobody has the right to abuse anyone verbally, to spam the forum, or make offensive remarks, including but not limited to posts that include racism, sexism, or comments derogatory to another’s sexuality.
Arguments are a part of the forum experience. Opinions on this site are diverse and sometimes directly polarized. We all love reading threads where there are many opposing ideas, but any differences must be addressed with respect.
We will not tolerate when individuals go beyond these boundaries— it’s not fun to read and destroys community atmosphere. Keep the arguments restricted to books and ideas, don’t attack people.
WARNINGS AND REPERCUSSIONS
Abuses to the above guidelines will result in an immediate warning. Continued abuses will result in a second, and final, warning. Persistent abuse after the two warnings will result in a ban from BNC.

GOOD ONE!!
Interesting...read her profile. She is a member of a group called "bitches who read books" and prides herself on being honest and no BS. Guess that only goes one way with Venessa.
Oh goody -- bitches who read books. Like there isn't enough stress in life we need people who pride themselves on creating it. NOT
Yes i must agree very friendly group :)..and i also agree with Honesty and BS only going one way here.. :)..I am sorry i commented on a post from 5months ago but i do like to read all the posts ive missed so i go back as far as i need..I did find that post very confronting and unfair and my feelings havnt changed.. I'll go back to *stalking* as someone calls it as ive never been keen on joining in when it seems to be a *pack* mentality...Have a great day Ladies...
At least it's a "pack" of friendly people who stick up for each other when unnecessarily attacked...by a hypocrite no less!
