Nicolle A big hello to all the new members. It is great to see a mixture of both experienced and inexperienced classic readers. I hope you all enjoy our group reads and feel free to make your own 'personal classics' page (at the bottom of the group homepage).

Liz Hello!

I've been away from my normal amount of reading this year, but am starting to crave it again. I just started homeschool with my 5-year-old, & after doing a ton of research on homeschooling methods, one of the ones I am strongly attracted to is Classical Education. SO I made a goal to actually start reading more classics, so I can have a better understanding while teaching my children in the years to come.

I figure being part of a Classics group will help me stick to my goals & keep me excited about daunting-to-me books, plays, poetry . . .

I'm excited I found this group, & honestly, out of all the classics groups I looked at, I was particularly drawn to this one because you watch movies that go along with your monthly reads - so fun!

I look forward to getting to know you all. I'm super busy lately with homeschool, my photography business, two children - you know, life. I happen to be pregnant as well (due at the beginning of January), but I'll do my best to stay active here. :)

Sashoy (sashwilson) | 2 comments Hey! I'm Sashoy, I usually read classics in school because I get more out of them but since I've taken the year off I haven't been reading much classics lately. What better way to start than joining a book club :)

message 1262: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Howell (kristin_howell) Hello! I'm Kristin, 21 years old, college student. I haven't read many classics, but I do want to. I never really understood what constituted "classic" past the definition we get in high school. Definitely going to be spending time on the group's bookshelves to acquaint myself with different books :-)

Excited to meet new people and find new books to add to my reading list!

message 1263: by [deleted user] (new)

Stephan (stephanr) Hi, I am Stephan and living in Hamburg, Germany. I consider myself a beginner reading classics although i've read some and really like the books of Hesse.
When not being in exams, i enjoy reading books and appreciate the benefits of an ereader over the "ordinary" book. :)

Hello Stephan, I'm Arlene from Cincinnati, Ohio, welcome to the group. I too am new to the group and have read a few classics but look forward to reading many more with everyone. I do love an ordinary book but my e-reader has won me over. I currently have 33 books on it (you certainly can't take 33 book on a holiday)!! :)

sonny (no longer in use) (satyrica) | 5 comments hiya, i am into classics in a big way right now as they tend to stimulate my brain more than say bestsellers. i read anything from de sade to camus but i am open to suggestions. i also want to make friends but it's not essential really, i don't bite :)

message 1270: by Lauri (new)

Lauri Hi my name is Laurie. I live in South Burlington, Vermont. One of my personal goals is to read more classics, so this group looks like a good fit for me.

message 1271: by Chatterjak (new)

Chatterjak Hi Laurie, I've started reading roughly one classic a month this year, after realising that despite being a voracious reader, I've read very few of the classics. I've found that some of them have surprised me by being easier to read than I had imagined, and that some do take more reading, but definitely worth the effort & are rewarding - it's made me want to read more of them, hope you'll enjoy it too :)

message 1278: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Hey everyone. I'm Danielle and I live in North Carolina, USA. I've read some classics already that I've enjoyed (Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Gone with the Wind, The Secret Garden, As I Lay Dying) but others were ruined for me in high school English (Brave New World, Frankenstein, and others) and I've decided to give them another chance where they won't be dissected into little bits. I am really looking forward to reading Charles Dickens because I know many of his stories from movies and want to actually read the books.

Good morning Danielle.Funny i was born in North Carolina, grew up in MI and my grandparents are from Russia. Anyways, i just wanted to say welcome and how's the weather?

message 1280: by Danielle (new)

Danielle The weather her is really nice! It's hovering around upper 60s to low 70s and sunny, which is my ideal. The leaves are mostly changed to bright red, orange, and yellow so it's beautiful looking down our street. I love the smell of the fall air, it smells like leaves and crisp, cool air. Fall is by far my favorite season, can you tell? :P

Justin (rockstarintraining) Hey everyone,

I'm Justin. I'm originally from Nashville, but I now reside in the midst of the corn fields of central Illinois. I'm married with three crazy kids under four years old so my reading time is limited. I'm excited to join the group and read through more classics that I always intend to read but often never do.

Some of my favorites include 1984, Crime and Punishment, The Great Gatsby, and Les Miserable.

Hi, Justin, I read 1984 recently and it immediately went to my top ten favourite books of all time. I've also been wanting to read Les Miserables for years. I have fond memories of The Great Gatsby but I read it in high school, which seems a lifetime ago, so I need to read it again.

Anyway, welcome to the group, and colour me impressed that you get any reading time at all with such young children!

Sally Howes | 13 comments Oh wow, A Farewell to Arms is one of my favourite books, and Hemingway is one of my all-time favourite authors. He says so much with so few words. The Sun Also Rises is another of my favourites, and I am about to start reading For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Lisa (prettyvacant) | 2 comments Hi everyone! I am Lisa and I joined this group becausse I am ashamed to admit that I didn't have to read one single classic in high school. It just wasn't required.

I am an adult woman who adores reading but I have never plunged into the classics. Well, I tried Wuthering Heights but lost interest quickly. Help me! I don't know what to read first. I know me and if it doesn't keep my interest I won't finish. I hope you guys can help.

Lisa, I have one book that I always recommend to people who say they want to start reading some classics but don't know where to start - To Kill a Mockingbird. It is SO easy to read, funny but poignant, a book you never forget. And I have never met anyone who didn't love it. I actually loaned my copy to a friend recently who said to me exactly what you did, and she loved it so much, she bought her own copy plus the wonderful movie starring Gregory Peck.

Other classics that I would recommend to a beginner include Pride and Prejudice, The Sun Also Rises, 1984, The Pickwick Papers and The Grapes of Wrath, but it really depends on your tastes. Do you like comedy, tragedy or history? Do you like epic sagas and stories about great events like wars, or do you like more intimate, personal or family stories? Are you interested in fantasy, romance, horror, science fiction or dystopian stories? Are you interested in particular eras, like Classical Greek and Rome or Regency or Victorian England or post-1900s? Are you interested in certain places in the world, like England, the USA, Russia or Africa? If you can answer any of these questions, it will help us to recommend the right books for you :-)

message 1296: by Dora (new)

Dora (dora95) Hi everyone,

I've been a meber of this group for a while, but I don't think I've introduced myself. As you might have guessed from my username, my name's Dora. I'm an eighteen-year-old girl with a passion for English literature. Although I was born and raised in Hungary, language number 1 has always been English to me. I don't even consider it a "foreign" language, partly because I speak with a British accent and partly because I'm pretty sure I'm not completely Hungarian.No-one knows who my biological father was, so I might actually be half English.

I'm off to England in July and wish to spend my whole life there. I'm currently choosing the right college for myself to study A-levels in order to go on to a top university to study English language and literature. I joined this group to discover new classics and to make as many British friends as possible

I don't have a favourite book, but if I had to pick one, David Copperfield has to be one of my all-time favourites, but other Dickens novels, Austen, Gasikell and the Bronte sisters are just as good. As for poetry, my favourites are Blake, Wordsworth and Coleridge, closely followed by Tennyson, Shelley and other romantic - and Victorian poets.

Dora (dora95) Does anyone in this group study English at uni?
