Great suggestion Jonathan, I'll add those to my list!

message 952: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) No problem Beckie they're all pretty good (particularly Dracula and Frankenstein). Also welcome Regina!

Hello Jonathan! :)

message 954: by Louise (new)

Louise I'll second Jonathan's suggestions (though studying Frankenstien at school put me off that one). If you like horror I'd also recommend the ghost stories of M.R. James. He's basically the master of the ghost story. I'd particularly recomend the short story "Oh, whistle and I'll come to you, my lad" as one that genuinely had me too freaked to sleep (should probably get out of the habit of reading ghost stories in bed...)

On the more science fictiony side there's Jules Verne and H.G. Wells if you haven't already read them of course. I've not read enough of either myself to be sure of that recomendation, but they are on my to read list.

Welcome, Beckie and Regina.

message 956: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, everybody new.

message 957: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Also Regina I'm reading Persuasion at the moment by Austen and that is a good read if you want to read more Austen.

I also would nominate anything by Poe in terms of gothic horror. He is the master of gothic horror short stories.

message 958: by Regina (new)

Regina (saccharinerants) | 6 comments @Lady Danielle & @Michael: Hello! :)

Thank you for your suggestion will do that :) I'm also into French classics. And I'm wanting to read also Frankenstein and Dracula.

message 960: by Mandy (new)

Mandy (mpasdonyahoocom) Hello! My name is Mandy. I usually have 2 books going at a time, one in audio format so I can listen to it in the car, and one either in physical form or on my Nook. I average about 2-3 books a week unless I tackle a particularly long book. I am glad I found this group, as I've realized that there are SO MANY great books I've never read! I am committing myself to reading at least one "classic" each month (probably more). I think my favorite classics so far are Wuthering Heights, Brave New World, and Flowers for Algernon (is that considered a classic?).

message 961: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, Mandy.

"...Flowers for Algernon (is that considered a classic?)" Do you think so? If yes, then yes. I loved it when I first read it long ago (didn't like the movie though).

Hello Nicolle! Thank you. This group is awesome and very challenging. :))

message 965: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I hope it is challenging in a good way :D
I never thought the group would take off like this, I expected no one would be interested!

message 966: by josie:) (new)

josie:) Hi I'm Josie, and i'm new to this site and its really fun! This summer I really want to try reading more classics, right now i'm on pride and prejudice, thoughts?

message 967: by josie:) (new)

josie:) Hi i'm Josie! I'm new to this site and its really fun! This summer i'm trying to read more classics, right now im on Pride and prejudice and pushing through! :D

message 968: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, josie1 and josie2. I can't see your shelves, so I don't know what you've read, but if you're enjoying Pride & Prejudice, you'd likely enjoy other 19th century British lit too. You might also like some southern stuff like Carson McCullers or Faulkner.

message 969: by Clinton (last edited Jun 18, 2012 06:16PM) (new)

Clinton (clinton_s) | 21 comments Hi Josie! Pride and Prejudice is good. I read it about a year ago and was surprised that I enjoyed it. I'm liking Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë more, though.

wow ididn't notice i wrote it twice, my computer probably glitched and i had to post it again differently. I mostly read YA fiction but im trying to read classics this summer. Ive also heard of faulkner

message 971: by [deleted user] (new)

I was just joking with you, josie. ;)
Have you read Tolkien? I think the group is reading him next month. You might like A Tree Grows in Brooklyn or To Kill a Mockingbird. I always recommend Flannery O'Connor and Jorge Luis Borges; short stories are a good introduction to things and O'Connor and Borges are two of the best.

message 972: by josie:) (new)

josie:) oh I think i have heard of a couple of them, but im really new to reading classics like those :p To kill a mockingbird, what do you think?

josie:) Clinton wrote: "Hi Josie! Pride and Prejudice is good. I read it about a year ago and was surprised that I enjoyed it. I'm liking Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë more, though."

I'm glad alot of people recommend it because i'm just trying to get through the first chapter right now, what do you think of Jane Austen?

message 974: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 18, 2012 07:01PM) (new)

To Kill a Mockingbird would be a great next step. Hope you have fun whichever direction you go in.

Clinton (clinton_s) | 21 comments josie:) wrote: "I'm glad alot of people recommend it because i'm just trying to get through the first chapter right now, what do you think of Jane Austen?"

Many people are surprised that I enjoy Jane Austen due to being a guy. For me, it's about how well she captures her aristocratic, early 19th-century lifestyle. It's before there was booming industry and big corporations, so people rode in carriages, wrote letters, read by the fireplace, etc. Austen's world was realistic, but it feels so imaginary. It's nice to take a step back and read about a simpler life. If you find the language difficult, just keep going. It will become easier once you're used to the style. Also, the chapters in Pride and Prejudice go by quickly, which is satisfying.

message 976: by Holly (new)

Holly | 92 comments Josie, I really enjoyed The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. Give it a try; I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's a good read!

message 977: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Josie, here is a link of our recommended to-read list so if you know for example that you like Pride and Prejudice which comes under Romance then you might like some of the other romances or another genre.

message 978: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi (essentiallybooked) Hi all--I'm Kelsi, a college student, bookworm, iced coffee loving, LSAT studying person. Reading is my escape. There are so many classics out there I want to read, and just books in general! I plan on starting Wuthering Heights today, and Crime and Punishment this week as well. Very excited for the July read. I read LOTR in Middle School, and would love to rediscover them. I'm also a fan of contemporary fiction and am obsessed with Julia Child.

message 979: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Welcome to the group Kelsi, I'm sure you'll feel at home in this group.

message 980: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm Miguel and I'm from Jalisco at Mexico. I like to read most genres . My favourite classic book is 1984 and War and Peace

message 981: by Tee27 (new)

Tee27 | 3 comments Hello, all! My name is Tee, and I'm from the U.S., and I joined this group because I've started reading the classics, again, and would like to discuss them with others.

Hi, Miguel and Tee and everyone else new.

message 983: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Welcome Miguel and Tee :D I look forward to your participation in our discussions.

message 984: by [deleted user] (new)

hello, my name's Chrissy. In school they only had us read Shakespeare, I've been interested in reading the classics for awhile, and I finally got a kindle fire, so here I am. :) So far I've read Frankenstein, Alice in Wonderland, and Through the Looking Glass. I live in Michigan with my husband and two cats. :)

message 985: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Chrissy :) Glad you have joined us. Feel free to make your own 'personal classics' page and join in with our monthly group reads.

message 986: by Olga (new)

Olga | 1 comments Hello, I'm Olga from Poland. I'm new to Goodreads but I love the idea behind it! I want to read more classics, so I started browsing groups and saw that you are reading 'The Fellowship...' and immediately signed up- I started reading it few days ago. I like Emily and Charlotte Bronte.

message 989: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hello Gabriela and Olga (both gorgeous names!), thankyou for expressing your love for classics and I look forward to hearing your comments on our reads. :D

message 990: by April (new)

April | 2 comments Hi. I'm April. I have read a few classics on your list, but not many. Read most of my books on my kindle, so if a month doesn't have a free one or one already bought (love ebay), then I probably won't participate. Am looking forward to Little Women next month.

message 991: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey there April!

message 992: by Tatjana (new)

Tatjana | 1 comments Hi. I'm Tanja. I'm from Latvia. I haven't got favorit book, there are a lot of good books. But first I got in mind is Gone With the Wind by Mitchell.

message 993: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi April, looking forward to your participation in reading Little Women.
Hiya Tanja :)

message 994: by Heather (new)

Heather Hi, I'm Heather and live in Michigan. Like everyone else, I've decided I want to read more of the classics. So far my favorite is the Grapes of Wrath. Currently reading Call of the Wild. Thanks for creating such a perfect group! Talk to you soon!

message 995: by April (new)

April | 2 comments I love Gone with the Wind. I've read it over and over, the first time in Jr High. Have you tried Scarlett & Rhett Butler's People? Not classics, but good follow-ups.

message 996: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) Hi everyone, my name's Leigh, I'm 16 yrs. old and I started to love classics after reading Jane Eyre. I actually prefer reading classics than YA books. I hope I make lots of friends in this group & I can't wait to participate in the group discussions! I'm currently reading Villette by Charlotte Bronte.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Leigh!

Leigh (leighsalv) Thanks!

message 999: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Leigh, enjoy our fabulous group and keep reading classics as I have found the more you read, the better they get!

message 1000: by Nikole (new)

Nikole (nikkibird) Hey!

I'm Nikki and just graduated from the University of South Florida with my degree in English Literature and was starting to lose my mind without having an outlet for discussing my thoughts on the books I'm reading - so I am very excited to participate in this group and get to know all you ladies.

I love reading anything and everything, but due to my class load these last couple of years I haven't had the time to indulge in anything extracurricular. So I have some serious catching up to do. I am a voracious reader and once a book has caught my attention I am unlikely to put it down until I've devoured it!

I have always read the classics during classes with the intent to analyze and decipher aspects of the novel, but never just enjoyed them. I'm looking for a comfortable place to start and this group seems right. I'm excited to get started!

<3 Nikki
