Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) As I always say. You can accept people making mistakes but you can't accept people not owning up to and trying to fix those mistakes. Responsibility is lacked by too many people these days.

Welcome all the recent newcomers to the group. I'm sort of getting lost in the rush of messages and people recently.

message 904: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey Ahmed I'm also reading 1984 and enjoying it so far. Hope you enjoy the group. It is great to find people who speak multiple languages.

message 905: by Ali (new)

Ali (aliciaclare) | 2 comments I joined this group a couple months ago, but now that school is almost over I actually have time to participate in the discussion? My name is Ali and my favorite classic is Pride and Prejudice. It is rather cliche, but I still love it. I'm currently reading 1984 for my AP Lit class, and I'm really liking it so far!

message 906: by Bluebell (new)

Welcome to the new members.

message 912: by Louise (new)

Louise Hey, I'm Louise, I'm 23 and from England. Although not strictly a 'beginner' at classics (I'd say I'm at the low end of intermediate) I really haven't read as many as I should. I've watched a heck of a lot of BBC adaptations though, if they count!

Erm favourite classics...The Jungle Books, Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, Wind in the Willows and all those sort of 'childhood classics' were definitely among my favourites growing up, but I haven't reread most them in about a decade.

More recently I've been trying to catch up on all the classics I avoided as a teenager and finally got round to reading Austen. I expected to love Emma, Pride and Prejudice, and Sense and Sensibility of course, but I actually really enjoyed Pesuasion and Northhanger Abbey as well. Those two both need a lot more love - especially Northhanger Abbey.

Next classic on my list is a toss up between Ivanhoe and Tess of the D'Urbervilles at the moment. But whichever it is they're gunna have to wait until after exams in June.

message 913: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Louise, welcome to the group. Feel free to make your own personal classics page and join our group reads.

message 914: by Louise (new)

Louise Thanks. I'll try and get onto sorting out my own classics page sometime next week. Looking forward to discussing classic books with other people. Think too many of my own peer group are still scared off 'the classics' by their memories of GCSEs/A levels. Will definitely try and get involved with some of the group reads once exams are all over and done with.

Louise That's the problem... :P
Thank you though. And good luck to anyone else with exams coming up too!

Hi ! I'm new on goodreads and French ^^ I'm not a newbie in French classics but I start to read in English the classical English literature only now. I'm tired of French translations. They make me hate English literature because of the atmosphere so oldy...
I'm in love with Jane Eyre, my real first classic in original version ♥

Welcome, Louise and Kxishitete.

message 923: by Mackenzi (new)

Mackenzi (werewolfmack) Hello! I'm Mackenzi, 20 years old and I hail from Arizona. Most of the classics I've read were for school, though I try to pick up one or two in my free time as well.

I think my favorite classic is The Picture of Dorian Gray, with Jane Eyre being a close second. I also really love Ivanhoe and Kidnapped, but last year I discovered my editions of those were abridged, so I'm not sure how much of the experience I got from them. It was frustrating because until that point Ivanhoe was one of my favorite books of all time.

I'm not very good at discussing books so hopefully I can pick up some good skills in this group. :o)

message 924: by Sunny (new)

Sunny (travellingsunny) | 231 comments Hi, Mackenzi! You'll find this a very welcoming bunch! We're reading Jane Eyre as a group in June, so it sounds like you'll have an opportunity to re-read it in its entirety with us!

Snoozie Suzie (snooziesuzie) Hi. I'm Suzie from Kent, England. I have been trying to read more classics and have a classics bookshelf here on GR and a personal classics challenge which is to read 15 this year, of which I have read 10. I am hoping to join you for Jane Eyre next month as I have not read this yet.

My favourite classics so far are probably Rebecca, Frankenstein and The Chronicles of Narnia.

My next classics are probably going to be (for an around the world year long challenge)The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom and Kidnapped

message 934: by Bia (new)

Bia | 3 comments So... Hi, I'm Bia, from Brazil. I started reading classics this year! Before that, I had only read kids classics, hahahah
Anyway, so far I've read Romeo and Juliet only. I'm reading now Sense and Sensibility and struggling with Anna Karenina...
I've joined because you are going to read Jane Eyre, and I wanted to read it, but I came across Game of Thrones, so now it is abandoned in my bookshelf ahhahahahaha
I really need some pressure, otherwise I will never read it!

message 935: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey Bia! Hope you can get into Jane Eyre because it is really very good.

message 936: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Greeting members new and old. You have arrived at the most interesting and diverse place on Goodreads. Please enjoy your stay.

message 937: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, I'm Layla, also from Brazil. I've read only a few classics so far, like Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights, and I'm really excited to start Jane Eyre.
And I understand your obsession with Game of Thrones Bia!

message 942: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Sawyer (swwllc) Hi. I am new to Goodresds and new to this group. I am now in the middle of my 3rd decade and have challenged myself to read classics (old and modern) more. I enjoyed J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Dickens, Robert Browning, Alfred Tennyson, and Jules Verne back in my teens; but, basically stopped reading much new or old for about 10 years (wasted time!). Of the classics I have recently read and enjoyed would be by Alexandre Dumas, H. G. Wells, C. S. Lewis, and Ayn Rand.

message 943: by [deleted user] (new)

So you're a red sox fan huh, Kyle? Nice.

Hi Kyle, take a peek at our classics for beginners to-read list and I'm sure you'll find something great to read. All books in it are recommended by group members and not just literary snobs so we can guarantee you'll find a good read. :)

Hi Kyle, based on the fantasy and speculative fiction authors you cite, you might enjoy Lord Dunsany apart from the generic suggestions here- he specifically influenced Tolkien, whom you mention.

message 947: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all! I haven't read many classics before. I'm almost 44 years old and I am challenging myself to read more classics. I typically read science fiction, horror, and just about anything else. I'm looking forward to participating in this group!

message 948: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Beckie :)

message 949: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey Beckie since you appreciate science fiction and horror I think you'd like Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and The Metamorphosis as classic reads.

message 950: by Regina (new)

Regina (saccharinerants) | 6 comments Hello! :) I'm Regina, from Philippines. I started reading classics when I was 18 years old. I started off with Charles Dickens: Great Expectations. And now, I am challenging myself to read more classics. I would like to re-read Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre" and Jane Austen books. Right now I'm reading Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert.
