The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Hi Elisha. Welcome! Hmmm... differing tastes here, but lots all classic. I'm about to start 20,000 Leagues under the sea, but, there's some Jane Eyre fans and lots of other ways to go.

Welcome, Jhecca!

I think the key to enjoying classics is finding classic books you that you would like to read. There are so many out there. The folks on this group have varied tastes, so we can help you out in exploring this new territory.

message 827: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Kaye Fox (lilalienhead) My name's Sabrina and since I've got a lot more time on my hands due to some unfortunate circumstances, I'm ready to read, read, read again!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome Sabrina.

message 829: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Welcome Jhecca! I'm sure you will find a classic to love.

Welcome Sabrina! I was laid up for several months a little while ago and reading is the only way that I could get through it. How you feel better! This is a great group, I'm sure you will love it. :)

message 830: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hello Sabrina!! :)

message 831: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Hello Jhecca and Sabrina. Welcome!

message 832: by Kim (new)

Kim (kaichinger) Hello all! New to the classics. In fact I just read my very first (Jane Eyre) and I LOVED it. I couldn't put it down. My employer said if I loved Jane Eyre then I needed to read Wuthering Heights...which is on my long list of must reads.

message 833: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Kim, so glad you enjoyed Jane Eyre, you will probably like Jane Austen's works too if you are in to the romance genre of classics.

message 834: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey Kim yes Wuthering Heights is one book that I think should be read although it's not enjoyable like Jane Eyre and not as passionate. I hope you find some great books here to read.

message 835: by Heather L (last edited Mar 19, 2012 11:03AM) (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Welcome, Kim. I hate to tell your employer this, but liking Jane Eyre is NO guarantee that you will like Wuthering Heights. I've read Jane Eyre twice and loved it both times, whereas I have tried to get through Wuthering Heights twice and failed. I would recommend Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë, though. I just read that one and loved it.

I also recommned Jane Austen's works. I've enjoyed everything read by her except Emma.

message 836: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Why didn't you enjoy Emma??

message 837: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Hello. I am Ashley, I'm 25 and I'm from Ohio. I like most genres and I do enjoy classics. I haven't read too many classics yet but so far I enjoyed Anna Karenina the most. I hope to have some great chats with you all about the books we're reading. :)

Welcome, Kim. I love Jane Eyre. I haven't worked up the courage to read Wuthering Heights yet.

Welcome, Ashley.

message 839: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Nicolle wrote: "Why didn't you enjoy Emma??"

I had a difficult time getting through that one. Didn't hold my interest, and didn't like the characters. This seems to be the one work by Austen that most divides readers -- either they really like it, or really hate it.

message 840: by Kim (new)

Kim | 1 comments Hi, I'm Kim, and I'm from Texas. I have been trying to catch up on reading the classics and my favorite book of all time was Tess.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Kim!

message 842: by Sadeem (new)

Sadeem (saddy_blue) | 45 comments Hello everyone. My name is Sadeem. I'm Egyptian, and I am currently living in Louisiana, US with my husband. I have a lot of catching up to do on the classics, and I am glad to have found a group that would help me.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Erica and Sadeem.

message 844: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey Erica and Sadeem I hope you find some cool novels here. @Erica - My experience at school got me onto the classics.
@Sadeem - I'm sure you'll find some classics to get you on the path. I myself have heaps to read too.

message 845: by Sadeem (new)

Sadeem (saddy_blue) | 45 comments Thanks Johnathan and Danielle, I am looking forward to reading cool novels and catching up. I think school made me have a bit of a weird relationship with classics; it's like I don't read them unless I have to (unless they're relatively modern or contemporary). It's like they're in the "homework" section of the big world library.

message 846: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Erica and Sadeem, welcome to the group. :)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Sadeem, I felt that way for a while, until I discovered all the classic gems that were like books I wanted to read in my spare time.

message 848: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) As a kid I liked the classics. Then school came and I began to think of the classics as slow and boring. Then I had lit and it showed me the power and beauty of words and how the books had something else without needing super fast plots.

message 849: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Welcome Erica and Sadeem! You will love this group! I agree with you both Lady and Jonathan. Classics are gems! I always enjoyed them but I read faster paced novels when I was younger. Eventually I got bored with them and I needed more from a book. Classics fill that need. :)

message 850: by Sadeem (new)

Sadeem (saddy_blue) | 45 comments Thanks Carrie. I agree with you and Lady,of course. Classics are sublime, there's no question about it.They tend to have a depth that is usually missing in more modern books.I actually spent a good deal of my time reading classics when I was younger, maybe that's why I stray to faster-paced books more often now, lol.
