Hahahaha ah well I can feel good about myself knowing no enjoyment of the romance classics can compare to that.

Aditya Joshi Hello folks.

This is Aditya (adie) from India. I'm 22, an engineer by profession; studying for my masters degree.

I wasn't a reader in my older days. However new friends in past 2-3 years introduced me to the beauty hidden beneath the pages. Slowly got into the classics. Having English as a second language, I find it difficult to decipher the old classical books. I've just started reading "Tale of Two Cities". Let's see how well I go!

message 755: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) Hey Aditya India's a place I'd love to go some point in the future (I have several friends from there or who have been) plus there's the whole love of cricket over there!

message 756: by Aditya Joshi (new)

Aditya Joshi Jonathan, let me know whenever you plan to come here. And do you like cricket? This game is worshiped here ;) Where are you from?

message 757: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Hi Aditya! I'm part of a buddy read for Tale of Two Cities if you want to join us! :)

Sure thing and yes I love my cricket and play every Saturday during the Summer. I'm from Australia so that should explain a lot: cricket being one of our two major sports.

Cool. I have a friend in Adelide. Well, seems Australia is having a good hand in ongoing series. India blew it all in the test series. And today's match was bad too. Let's see what happens next.

Two major sports? I guess the other is Rugby, right?

message 765: by Martyna (new)

Martyna (takinaczej) Um, hi everyone!
This is Martyna from Poland who has fallen in love with classics recently. I am amazed by Polish author Stefan Żeromski (who is mostly hated for the books we have to read at school, but his writing is really incredible). I want to get into British and German classics, because those are two languages I am going to study soon. Well, I hope I am.

Yeah but to be fair we did catch a bit of luck with the new players we chose and Ponting just came good. I'm still thinking that it could be India and Australia final in the ODIs.

Um well we play cricket in summer and winter its actually more AFL. Which is our own sport we invented. Australian Rules Football... Rugby's also popular but it's not so nationally accepted. Same with soccer. We like all the other sports too. Melbourne being kind of the unofficial sports capital of the world in many ways. If you ever come down in October you'll see the MCG get flooded with people supporting football teams. About 100,000 all up it's impressive for a country with about 21,000,000 I believe.

Also welcome Martyna.

Welcome, Aditya and Martyna.

message 768: by Aditya Joshi (new)

Aditya Joshi Hello Martyna. I'm a newbie in classics too. Goodreads community seems to be very supportive. You'll make many good friends here.

Enjoy!

I heard it in news today that Dhoni would be expelled from the team for the upcoming series. We're all waiting for 100th century of Sachin Tendulkar (the God), and then he'll be retired too. Well, I really appreciate the strategies Australian players have made. Plus Indians have gone out of track after getting World Cup in hand. Anyways, all we want is a good game, and we are having it ;)

Martyna (takinaczej) Thanks! Nice to meet you all ;)

message 771: by Nipuna (new)

Nipuna Jayatunge (nipunasuja) | 3 comments Hello, I joined this group a few weeks ago but I never really introduced myself. I'm Nipuna, I'm from Sri Lanka (but I know very little about cricket, unfortunately! :P). Currently I'm an undergrad student, studying in the UK.

I'm pretty new to classics too, but I'm reading a little more these days and I'm enjoying it. At the same time there's still a lot for me to learn and it's encouraging to have a group of other classics readers around! :)

message 772: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Welcome Nipuna! I just read and enjoyed your analysis of Slaughter House Five. You will have fun here!

message 773: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sfountaine) | 1 comments Hi - I'm Stephanie and I'm from the USA. I love reading and will read pretty much anything, any genre. I usually have quite a few going at any one time. My familiarity with the classics is okay, but not extensive by any means. I always mean to do better and read more classics, so I'm really looking forward to reading with all of you!

My grandma started reading classics to me as a very young child. I'm having a good time with classics that I thought would be new to me, but are very familiar once I really start reading.

Hi Nipuna, Melissa and Stephanie.

message 778: by Carrie (new)

Carrie Welcome and congrats on the little and coming babies! Mine are teens now. I miss the little baby stage. :)

message 779: by Heather (new)

Heather (nicknameheath) | 4 comments Hi all! I'm Heather and I'm from Denver, Colorado. I read a lot for school, research, and to keep up to date on the newest YA literature (I'm in education) and I recently realized my experience with the "classics" ...who decides this anyway?! :)... is limited to what I have read or am reading in class. Looking forward to some insight and discussions! Oh, and my fav literature is Harry Potter and Shakespeare...what a combo!

message 780: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Sorry for neglecting you newbies!

Hello to Nipuna, Stephanie, Melissa, and Heather!!

This group will blow your socks off! There are so many opportunities to read classics with the group, no matter what your reading pace. Also take a look at our birthday competition which is closing on the 14th March.

message 781: by Beri (new)

Beri (beriaru) | 3 comments Ah~ Just saying hello. I love classics (although high school literature sort of killed a majority of them for me) and would like to read up on it again now that I'm (slightly) more mature.

It's nice to meet everyone!

message 782: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Beri, I think a lot of people are put off classics by high school! I'm glad you've decided to read up on it again. :)

message 783: by Claire (new)

Claire (goodreadscomWine_and_Sheets) | 2 comments Hi, I am Claire. I am in the U.S. now, but have lived in the UK, Belgium and Canada as well. I am a bit of a globetrotter, and do not really identify with one place (yet!).

I love reading the classics, and prefer them; I love literature, not books. I need a metanarrative; do you know what I mean?!

Anyway, I am happy to find this group; I just read 1984 again, too bad I missed it last fall with you all! I look forward to reading with you!

Cheers!

message 784: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hello Claire, I would be interested to know seeing as you are a globetrotter, where the literature you identify most with is written/set (if any particular place).

message 785: by Karen (new)

Karen Girvan (Karengir) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Karen from Scotland. Thought it might be a good idea to join this group, as I have lately been allowing my addiction to fantasy fiction to overtake more cerebral reading material.

message 786: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hiya Karen, I'm sure you will be just as addicted to classics as you are to fantasy fiction soon as a member of this group. :-)

Claire (goodreadscomWine_and_Sheets) | 2 comments Nicolle wrote: "Hello Claire, I would be interested to know seeing as you are a globetrotter, where the literature you identify most with is written/set (if any particular place)."

Hi Nicolle,

I grew up in a rural town in the northeast of the U.S., but I find that I identify more with Canadian literature than U.S. literature. Growing up, I read Faulkner, Steinbeck, Alice Walker, etc… but could really feel a personal connection to any of the characters... maybe Edith Wharton, but that's the only one I can think of, off the top of my head.

But, Alice Munro's Lives of Girls and Women-- that I can definitely identify with. But even other Canadian authors, both male and female, I love reading and really can “connect” with the characters.

Finally, I have to say that my absolute favourite author of all time is Michael Ondaatje. He is so poetic, and his prose has so many layers, I love reading it and reveling in the meaning that he weaves.

Jessica (jessicatittel) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Jessica! I'm very exited to join this group, as I haven't read very many classics, but I am looking to broaden my horizons!

message 790: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Aschmann (byways) | 6 comments Hi,

I retired last May and enjoying more time to read and look forward to discussing them with others. I couldn't even begin to give my favorite classic. Of course the Narnia books and Lord of the Rings and all the old mystery series . . . I've got Sherlock Holmes so hope to get into that discussion.

message 791: by kwesi 章英狮 (new)

kwesi 章英狮 (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Rachel, welcome to the group and I'm glad you are reading more books lately. Talking about Narnia, well, I'm not really a fan of that series and I find it preachy. Haha. Anyway, judgement depends to the reader itself. I'm planning to read Lord of the Rings soon, maybe this coming June or July. Sweet reads!
