Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I don't remember if it was the Blue Girl that started it or De Lint's first book, but this is the definitive one for sure. Little Grrl Lost is good too.

I'm debating starting Legend (Legend, #1) by Marie Lu But I really don't know. I's been really hyped up and I don't want to be disappointed...

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) I haven't heard of Legend before...hmm. Might be worth a shot. I haven't read it's descrip yet.

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Currently reading Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown and I love it! It's one of those books you think you're going to read only a chapter from and find out you've read five or six. I recommend it!

Also finally reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling after all this time! So far, I really like it. I think the first book's probably the slowest, right? Probably because you have to get into the action and stuff.

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) You haven't read Harry Potter? Dude, those books have saved my life more than a couple times. You are going to love them. And yes, the first three are a bit slow but once you get going you can't stop.

I read Everblue last year and I felt that it was one of the most exciting books since the Harry Potter series.

Sarah I just finished reading The Hunger Games trilogy, The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins and they were really good, seriously reccomend them! I ordered two mer books the other day and am waiting for them to arrive before I start a new one! Stormswept by Helen Dunmore and Forgive My Fins (Fins, #1) by Tera Lynn Childs Can't wait to read these, I loved the Ingo series and didn't know there was a 5th book and I've been meaning to read Forgive my Fins for ages! :D

oliviasbooks | 261 comments Since you loved 'Lost Voices' I think you'll like this one, too. I mean. I did not like Lost Voices so much, but the mental disposition of the merpeople towards humans is comparable. There is added romance, though, but tame so far.

message 271: by Garrett (last edited Feb 06, 2012 05:31PM) (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) I was reading Abandon (Abandon Trilogy, #1) by Meg Cabot but it's just not working out. I tried, tried, TRIED to love this book, but I can't. There are way too many flashbacks, and plus, the main character is always afraid she's going to say the wrong thing to the guy, afraid that he'll get angry. How can you be in love with someone like that? And she cries (or, in this, case, tries not to cry) over everything it seems. I swear to God if I have to hear about her tears about to fall one more time... Oh, yeah, and she's always hoping he'll kiss her even though he scares her. "Insert Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie" here, please.* I give up. I loved Meg Cabot's Insatiable, it was amazing, but Abandon is just crap! I mean, when I think of books about Persephone in the Underworld, I want snarling three-headed dogs, ghostly dead people, hideous winged Furies, etc. I've never before actually cursed at a story protagonist before until now. Even Bella Swan didn't infuriate me that bad.
Okay, so end of rant. While the story's writing and cover were pretty, and some aspects of the mythology appealed to me, I just can't go through with a story with characters that I literally wanted to chuck my book away over.
Now that that's over, back to what I'm currently reading. And that's Book of Shadows (Wicca, #1) by Cate Tiernan . I'm really liking this one. It's got an excellent pace; I can totally see it playing out in my head like a movie.

I just read Abandon for a book club at my library, oddly enough. And I had a bit of the same reaction. I really didn't like it that much but there is really no damage done. It's just a flop.
There were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many flashbacks. Meg Cabot tends to do that. Like, if you think about it, the book takes place in maybe 3 hours and it seems like an eternity. Also, it was too realistic fiction for me. There wasn't enough fantasy. It just seemed like a kind of weird attempt at YA Realistic. I enjoyed it veeeeeeery minimally. It was forgettable.

message 273: by Garrett (new)

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Yeah, I hated the flashbacks too. I mean, when they actually are interesting, I'm all for flashbacks, but nothing really happened in them. I loved Meg Cabot's Insatiable. But the other Meg Cabot books I tried reading I could't get into them as successfully. Maybe it's because Insatiable was an adult book and the characters more mature. I'm really getting annoyed with books where the main characters practically collapse when a guy barely touches them. I understand butterflies in the stomach and things like that, but really? If a guy makes you collapse with one look, there's something seriously wrong.

message 274: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Yeah, as a girl, I can safely say that's not how it is, lol.

I'm currently reading Forgive My Fins and I actually kind of like it. It's cheesy, but in that kind of good chick flick way. It's very sweet and bubbly, which is something I haven't read in a loooooooooong time. The lore is pretty cool too.

I think that you'll really like this book and the sequel. Both are a fun read and Tera Lyn Childs does such a wonderful job of building the main character that you wish, somehow, somewhere, there actually is a mermaid named Lilly.

Dana (piyo) | 57 comments Finally, I've managed to get one book in for my mermaid goal of ten this year, Fathom by Ashley L. Knight . It's been a while since I'd read book one, but most of it came back to me as I read book two. And I really liked it. Today I started to read Ingo (Ingo, #1) by Helen Dunmore , and it'll be my "work book" that I read on my breaks. So far I'm enjoying it.

Ingo is definitely a children's book, but it's pretty fun. I've only read the first, but I'll get around to the others soon.

How was Nightshade? I've been debating on reading it. It looks a lot like a bad werewolf romance to me. But at the same time....it could be good.

message 282: by Naomi (new)

Naomi (moontree) | 12 comments I really liked it. I thought it's written beautifully, and she doesn't call them werewolves. There's a little more to them than that. And there's witches and other creatures in this story that are all very twisted. ;)

There's a love triangle in it, so if you're tired of those, you should be forewarned.

Garrett (garrettgoodreads) Slowly making my way through Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins . Love it, but it's not what I'm in the mood for right now. Going to see the HG movie tonight-so excited!

And now I'm reading The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales by Jacob Ludwig Karl Grimm . Just so y'all know, some of these stories are effed up. Nothin' like Disney. :)

message 288: by Randi (last edited Mar 23, 2012 11:50AM) (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) (guitarchick) Catching Fire is really really slow in the beginning, I don't blame you, lol.

I'm currently reading The Scorpio Races and it reminds me a lot of The Hunger Games, which I'm sure is no mere coincidence.

Oh, and the Hunger Games film is amazing. I can safely say you're probably not going to be disappointed.

I loved it. It was so true to the book! I think the right things were made differently from the book so that the two were a nice compliment of each other, and the pacing was perfect, too. :)

Literally Jen (vampsita) | 18 comments I just started May (Daughters of the Sea, #2) by Kathryn Lasky last night, only intending to read a chapter or two, and before I knew it I had read 22% of it. Every other book that I'm currently reading is for a review for 3 different book blogs, so I needed something that was just for me. Have had May for a few months and am glad I started it. Have lots of other mermaid books I want to read this year, too.

May is the seminal piece in the DOTS series. If you read the other two, this one really ties them together.

Daughters of the Sea works better out of order in my opinion. Hannah was just so slow that reading May first gives it extra meaning in my opinion. But I read them in order, so I'm one to talk, lol.
