Its a cool little thing that people do on Christmas. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret...
We set up a shelf perhaps, for the books we would love to receive. And voila, Santa (the person who was allowed our name) send us something :)
How about adding a feature of uploading images while creating a new topic or discussion. Is it feasible here?
@mods, how about a best thread award each month( if there are enough threads) to the person who puts up the most interesting, or based on responses or something....just an idea :)
Last few years no one participated. So far, only dely and me are interested. If we have a few more participants, we can start challenges for this group.
Here's the thread regarding challenges

Just a suggestion for mods...Why dont we have a review place for books recently read ? No, its not a blog link. The review must be published there (not a comment, a review). In addition there can be a blog link too. The sub threads can be genre wise. In essence, it should be a handy tool to navigate and find the next book.
If you could update the book of the year! Or last years award winning books Catagorically! Or recently held Craze books or Books with high sales! .... When Snowden's case leaked I heard that "1984" by George Orwell sales went up !!!
I mean!... My brother bought this book "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt which won the Pulitzer prize for fiction in year 2014. So , If possible last 10 years award winning books Genre wise!. Actually not just last 10 yrs but last centurys bcaz there are many other books which almost went Unheard!. Like dante's Inferno (Dark Comedy) is re-invented by Dan Brown inferno into Fiction. And many more!..... Reality related books as i mentioned (Snowden) ...I'm sorry this is too much but also Recently craze held books Genre wise ....! Thank you !
phew, a very good idea, but would be a massive project with lots of time and work (though fun work) involved. Most of us here are hard pressed for time. So, unless someone volunteers, it'd be difficult.
I can understand! .... I just started reading few months before and created great interest.I'm new to goodreads so I will participate and try my best to research and post books. And i'm sure Ppl will start showing interest soon.
Vinay, if you aren't aware yet, there's listopia, where there are innumerable lists of every possible genre/group of books.
Here are a few samples:

its nice to see that some elite are showing their passion towards reading ,nice.....if you dont mind here my suggestion will be that we should also focus towards the books which are having the contents regarding india and which are directly or indirectly beneficial to native students so that culture churn up with them .i.e amartya sen books ,nandan neilkeni, bhiku parukh, ranchandra guha, ishita dubey, bipan chandra, romiala thapar ...................and so no....sorry for if it seems odd.......still in india the pattern of exam is being is being dominated by objective questions rather than expressing your personal views . so friend think upon this also
Ranjit, we give equal importance to all sorts of books. And if you take time to go through various threads you can see that India has been given deserving importance.
ya nice to hear madam can you please help me a bit in going through the books which are not having the sign of privew or audio because am too enthusiastically in mood of going throgh the book imagining india and the book ishita banerjee dubey on indian history .....please.
It's not a big issue, but I don't like one thing in the group description (I just joined this group). It says, "any gentle and non-argumentative soul" is welcome in this group, but there's nothing wrong in being argumentative! Argumentative people are often those who value rationality and logic.
Well, i agree with your interpretation of the quoted text. However in the Indian context, we felt arguments are based more on emotions and ego than on rationality and that is what we meant when we put it up, though we should have made it clear. Thanks for pointing it out.PS: Just an ex-mod now.
Deepankar, you are right.
Shall change the wordings at the earliest. And all kudos to revival of this group goes to the above person, our esteemed ex - mod :-)

Yo! mods!, can we have different threads for different books where you can discuss the particular books with the members? I would like to discuss what others think of the books I have read or reading. There is book of the month but that covers only that book, what abt other books?
@Harshit: Check out the Cozy Reads folder. Here you can look for people who'd be interested in buddy reading a book with you and then you can discuss it.
Is there any thread, devoted to the regional books, which have been translated in English? If not, it would be great to have such a thread in which readers can share English versions of their favourite books written in their regional languages.
heyy everyone, it will be great if someone can suggest me the best way a new member can do to get active to this great, i mean the threads should i go through first and the threads where i can easily start a convothanks :)

Just scroll down and see what threads pique your interest, and join in the discussions... There are discussions on many authors , books, genres etc... We also have monthly group reads.. This month we are reading and discussing Khaled Hosseini's And The Mountains Echoed, so if you have read or are interested in joining the group read, you may check out the thread for that...
If you simply want to start a conversation and get to know other active members, you may drop in and say hello in the Chat thread ( https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...).
There are also many interesting game threads, you may try them too.

Hi all. have not been here for quite a while! when i saw the goodreads awards nominations. Not a single indian book. on india or by indian authors. I remembered that we had planned a few years ago to have our own indian readers awards. Time to take matters into our own hands? IRA 2016? What do you think?
Hey Suchitra!!! :D So good to see you here after a long time. How about dropping by the cafe with this interesting suggestion? Its always good to come across old timers (not referring to age at all!)

IRA 2016 - sounds good. But implementation has its own problems. Let me discuss with other mods.. and see.

Question about Personal Reading ThreadIs it ok if posts on this thread sometimes spill beyond current or recent reads?
Sure, go ahead. In your personal reading thread, whatever you post is fine. It is up to you. :-)
What if it's a "deal"? Do I post it in "new books" (although most books are not strictly new) or in the "giveaway" folder? I'm curating a bundle of fantasy books, not specifically for Indian readers, but if there are Indian readers who like fantasy they might want to get a hold of 12 novels for 12$... where should I post that (IF I can post that)? Thanks!
