Susan The title characters in Me & Emma are very nearly photographic opposites--8-year-old Carrie, the raven-haired narrator, is timid and introverted, while her little sister Emma is a tow-headed powerhouse with no sense of fear. The girls live in a terrible situation: they depend on an unstable mother that has never recovered from her husband's murder, their stepfather beats them regularly, and they must forage on their own for food.
Stop here and you have a story told many times before, as fiction and nonfiction in tales like Ellen Foster, or I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings --stories in which a young girl reveals the horrors of her childhood. Me & Emma differentiates itself with a spectacular finish, shocking the reader and turning the entire story on its head. Through several twists and turns the reader learns that things are not quite the way our narrator led us to believe and everything crescendos in a way that (like all good thrillers) immediately makes you want to go back and read the whole book again from the start.

Ooh! How was that, I've been wanting to read it.

message 329: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Surprisingly, it was pretty good. It's a very quick read, only 110 pgs, and I got it super cheap on Amazon- that's why I got it.

It's very light, and quick, and I could probably really find faults in it if I tried, but for some reason, it was just a fun, quick read. I liked it.

Did you cry Kourtney? I did and it sucked because I listened to the audiobook at work (back when it was ok to do that, grrrrr) and tried so hard not to cry.

message 339: by Kourtney (last edited Mar 30, 2011 02:09PM) (new)

Kourtney (readthateventually) | 1215 comments Would it make me an awful person if I said I didn't cry?

I think because I just finished Columbine about 5 books ago, and already went through all of my emotions, it felt more like fiction to me (albeit realistic fiction). And I figured out the ending about 75% of the way through. The fact that the author used exact events that occured with Columbine I was able to take myself out of the story and say "Oh that happened at Columbine" - like the mother committing suicide, the crosses that were erected for the victims and the shooter, and the teacher that wrote on the shooter's essay that they would "trust them" after reading the essay (whereas the essay was a lie). All three of those plot points, and a couple of others, brought me out of the story and into reality. While I couldn't put the book down at the end, it was powerful but didn't move me to tears.

I just read it too!!! What did you think? I was driven a bit crazy by the continuity issues. A book that will obviously appeal only to fans of the series should at least get the plots from the previous books correct!

message 349: by Nicole (new)
