Sarah | 13814 comments I got a slow cooker! I'm very excited about that. Now to find some good recipes.

I also got a new monitor to finally replace my ridiculous CRT behemoth. The only thing is now I have to buy a new desk because mine was built for a big monitor. This is the old one, with the big slanty back:

Anyone have a suggestion for a new one? I don't like any of the current IKEA offerings, but it should probably be something I can build upstairs so I don't have to worry about measuring or getting someone else to carry it with me.

Phil | 11837 comments Bike rack for my car. My sweetie also had a hitch installed on the car so I can actually use the rack.

At first I thought the photo was of the slow cooker, Sarah, and the configuration looked a bit odd.

I got one of those little Canon digital snapshot cameras. It's really compact yet takes pictures with much higher resolution than my old one (about four or five years old).

message 4: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I got gift cards so I can buy a Le Creuset dutch oven.

message 5: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Oh, we have one of those, Larry--got it about 15 years ago and use it more than any other pot or pan in the house. It's great.

message 6: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Larry, you could always buy this wonderful ten-piece set.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's on my someday list...nice, Larry!

Félix (habitseven) Phil wrote: "Larry, you could always buy this wonderful ten-piece set."

Uh yeah well ... the gift card isn't quite that big. But thanks for thinking of me, Phil.

Phil | 11837 comments You're welcome. Too bad neither of us was in the audience that day.

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) For sure, for sure.

message 11: by Lori (new)

Lori Sarah - did you get a crockpot or Dutch oven? My holiday present to myself was a Lodge Dutch oven, but I also own a crockpot that I still have never used! I think I like the Dutch oven because it's more versatile, you can use it in the oven or stovetop. But I'm really not sure thay aren't the same thing, really. But I cooked a lamb roast that came out so so good.

Larry - I think you should save your money and buy a Lodge, people swear it's just as good....

I love hearing what people got as gifts.

Meanwhile someone please advise! And for both Sarah and I, recipes please or suggestion where to find?

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Crockpot, Lori. I've found the vegetarianslowcooker blog, which I think will come in handy. I mostly dream of cooking beans and chilis and soups that will be ready when I get home. I wonder if the smell will drive Bo up the wall, though.

message 13: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I have a crock pot that's electric with a timer on it. No oven or stovetop needed. It's handy when you are leaving something to cook slowly when you're out all day. Get home at it's done! Plus you can latch the lid and take it wherever without a problem of spilling.

The dutch oven needs an oven or burner.

Lodge -- I've never heard of that brand -- will check it out.

message 14: by Lori (last edited Dec 27, 2010 12:31PM) (new)

Lori Sarah - I know that the smell drove all the humans in our house up the wall! Best smelling cooking ever. Even more than Thanksgiving. But since you don't cook meat, Bo will probably be OK. :D

Larry - I know some people do leave the house with a Dutch oven going, but you're right - that would make me very nervous. So now that I've been inaugurated into the slow cooking method, I shall start using the crockpot!

You know, that's a good point. We got ours as a gift, so I wasn't really conscious of the price, but looking on the web now, I see that it's pretty steep. If the Lodge is heavy cast iron with a good enamel coating, it's probably worth a look. Seems like it's much more reasonable.

message 16: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 136 comments I got a Kitchenaid mixer, a firepit, and Uggs. It was a good Christmas.

message 17: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Wow Kristina. Good for you. Way to keep the economy going!

Target stores and most True Value hardware stores carry Lodge, Larry.

Can I chime in with what I got? I love it.

It is a stereo, cd player and mp3 player dock for mounting in the kitchen under the cabinet.

My dog is frantic when I get home after I've had something in the slow cooker all day while I'm at work.

OMG dog talk. Do we have a thread for that? Heiderson? Bun? Help me stat!

Sarah | 13814 comments Dan wrote: "My dog is frantic when I get home after I've had something in the slow cooker all day while I'm at work. ."

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm fairly sure I would find Bo on the counter with his head in the crock pot. He's remarkably resourceful when food has been left out. He can also count people, so he knows when it's safe to start attempting food thievery.

message 25: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I got kind of shitty presents, honestly. Ok, not that shitty. I got a donut maker which is basically a waffle maker that makes donuts. I also got a rack for cooling cookie sheets but it's based on suction and not very strong so I'm taking that back. I'm an ungrateful bastard.

I want Kristina's mixer. But not that badly, I guess.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments A suction cooling rack? I don't understand.

message 27: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ok, this bears explanation. My wife is sort of a visionary on multipurposing. So she bought a rack that I think was originally intended for clothes that she thought could also be used as a cooling rack. Problem...it's made of wood and, uh, made for clothes. Good effort, though. Don't worry, I was courteous.

message 28: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, the suction part was to hold the rack to the wall.

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Ah! Not while the cookies are cooling. Just for storage? That makes more sense. I thought maybe they would suction to the wall parallel to the floor/perpendicular to the wall, for when all of your counter space is already used by other cooling racks. I don't know if I'd trust suction over gravity in that case.
Bo says he approves that design idea and suggests beef cookies.

message 30: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Might as well just toss them on the floor.

Oh god, RA. First, I fucking want that rack to dry Leah's diapers on in the kitchen. It is the only south facing sun window in the house and I'm Deeply Missing my clothesline about now.

Second, I got a 25 dollar gift card to BB&B and I can't stop fantasizing about the shopping trip.

Third, any chance you will join my white elephant exchange and mail that rack to me?

Fourth, can you at least send me now a link to the website so I can see what it looks like?

Fifth, should I maybe buy myself one?

message 32: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments She means well, and I appreciate the inventive thinking just, uh, not with my cookies. I think her idea was you could take the rack off the wall when the cookies were done cooling and store the rack somewhere else, yes. But they sell collapsing cooling racks at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. And I don't know if I even need a cooling rack.

message 33: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments My dogs are ok with regular cookies, when I'm not looking, at least. But they would approve beef cookies too, I'm sure.

message 34: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I can't even imagine beef cookies.

message 35: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I dare you to google image "beef cookies".

Sweeter just told me about "mincemeat cookies" and punch served to them at the paper on Christmas eve.

vomit.

message 38: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments There are a bunch of foods I get confused.
Mincemeat isn't meat, right?
And sweetbreads are?

message 39: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I don't believe mincemeat has any meat in it, and is funky tasting if I remember correctly from over 30 years ago the last time I tried anything with it in it.

message 40: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I understand it is shit like raisins and figs cooked in "meat juices."

message 41: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Beef fat, too.

message 42: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments So mincemeat DOES have meat? People always say to me that it's just fruit.

message 43: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I really don't know. I doubt if modern mincemeat has any meat.

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I just looked up Alton Brown's recipe and it has beef suet. Wikipedia says you can substitute vegetable stock.

message 45: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I don't want to eat"suet".

message 46: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yeah, I thought only pigs ate suet, actually.

message 47: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No, birds eat suet. You yell suet to call a pig.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I got a couple of aqua sweaters. Now I have five. :)

And a couple of DVD sets, Bones season 5, and the Sherlock BBC series. Wish there were more that 3 episodes on it, though!

And two books, A Spy in the House, and Fallen, which I'm looking forward to reading after I'm done with my current book.
Um, which is NOT the book it says I'm reading here on GR. I really need to update that...

message 49: by Jammies (new)

Jammies My family Christmas was kind of a bust--my parents left my presents in Columbus and my brother and his family got me a lavender scarf. I don't look good in pastels and I don't wear scarves much.

My friends, on the other hand, spoiled me rotten with soft knitted wraps, fancy knitting gadgets, knitting books and wax tart warmers, so yes, I got some cool gifts.

Sally, when are you going to BB&W? I have a coupon for 20% off your entire purchase that I won't be using, and I'd be happy to toss it in the mail tomorrow!

message 50: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) ok, I am a sports fan and I got a Rockies jersey from my sis, a Tim Tebow shirt from my daughter and Ken Burns Baseball DVD set from santa. sports heaven! Also, my customers were rather generous this year. movie tickets, restaurant, starbucks, and Barnes & Noble gift cards. :)
