Essilie | 39 comments Are you learning Elvish, Strider?

message 102: by Strider (new)

Strider | 104 comments Essilie, no, not at the moment. I have the Elvish dictionaries and started reading them and other materials to see which of the languages I wanted to study, but never actually began to really learn one or both of them, not seriously.

I "temporarily" studied the Elvish-to-English translations from the movies'songs and the characters' scripts when LOTR first came out. I also read quite a bit of material from the individual (name temporarily escapes me) who was the films' primary Elvish language consultant. So I did learn much, but as a written language and not as a speaking one, although from lack of use I would have to start over.

I am seriously considering looking into our community colleges to see if any offer Elvish Languages. If there are enough requests for something, they try to accomodate the community.

How far have you gone in learning your language? Going solo or are you learning from someone, other than the books?

Strider | 104 comments Just remembered: David Solo. His book, A Gateway to Sindarin, is a good one.He teaches languages at the University level.

I have not gone a long ways yet, but far enough to understand most of the Elvish in the Hobbit without needing the translations. I have been learning from a website called The Council of Elrond, which offers online Elvish lessons. They have exercises which you can complete and then submit for grading. It's all free.
I have heard of David Solo, I'll look up that book.

I'm using the workbook of The Council of Elrond as well and I think that it's a really good one! You can also look for a study buddy so you can learn together.

.you celebrate new year's day on 25th march

message 108: by Strider (new)

Strider | 104 comments Now, do we know WHY this date was chosen? (Little trivia here.) And WHO began using this date as an official start of the New Year? (Hint: I don't think the Orcs used it!) :-D

Codex Regius (codex_regius) | 15 comments "~You hate it when Elves are only thought of as 'Santa's little helpers' and have tried to explain the difference between Santa-elves and Syrian Elves to your 5-year old cousins."

I would like to get explained as well what distinguishes the Syrian Elf from the Iraqi Elf!

message 110: by Strider (new)

Strider | 104 comments One is from Syria and one is from Iraq? Plus, their elfs were make-believe, whereas Legolas and Celeborn we're real! ;-)

Mary Grace (jaded_angel) | 24 comments I'm really shy until I start talking about LOTR/Hobbit/Tolkien, Marvel, Star Wars, or sports lol! I know I'm really late and this thread like ended lol...whatevs :P

message 112: by Strider (new)

Strider | 104 comments Well, I guess one must consider the possibility they may be addicted when they change phone carriers and their four books (Hobbit & LotR trilogy) do not transfer to their new phone . . . and after weeks of trying to get this error solved (without success) they begin to have sweaty palms, rapid heart beat, night sweats, and extreme irritability! Then, when the problem is solved, and they can listen to their books again while working, and they notice their anti-social behavioral symptoms begin to subside, we'll, maybe one should look into the possibility they're slightly on the side of near-addiction.

If you want to see what real addiction is, try taking my LotR music away for a week. That could be ugly!! :-D

If anyone touches my LOTR music, they will learn a lesson.
