I didn't start counting at the beginning of 2010, but I read 278 books in about 6 months.

Marcia, how did you like Freedom? Have you read Franzen's other work- The Corrections? I've heard mixed things about both and a lot of people seem to like one, but not the other.

just into freedom about 60 pages. Yes i read corrections. Liked corrections a little heavy reading but interesting. I heard lots of publicity about Freedom. I have the sony e reader so i looked up the reviews for Freedom and they were awful almost to the last one if I believed them i surely would not have bought the book; Unfortunately I bought the book and did not read it for at least2 or 3 months dueto the reviews. till I had a lull and I am now just reading it, so far I am so impresssed with it I do not understand how so many readers find it boring/ Of course I have only read 60 pages/ Also the main character is the same age as I am and I grew up in the same area and time so I can relate to her and that may make the story more palateablle but all I can say so far it seems like a great read.

Sometimes the best books are the books that have people who either LOVE it or HATE it with a passion. It kind of tells you that, one way or another, it made people feel something. I've frequently heard of Freedom that it is whiny and self-indulgent (in a suburban yuppie way, it seems). Maybe it's a book like Olive Kitteridge that it really appeals to a group of people with a certain kind of life experience.

just finished Freedom. I guess I am in the group that finds it to be fantastic. I could not put it down. Finished it in less than 3 day. Someone said they found the characters boring and whinny i guess i was reading a different book. I also liked his first book Corrections. Would really put it on any list of books to read this year.

Absolutely, Melanie. It was a lovely book. I really enjoyed the development of the characters and their relationship, the doubts they each had, not knowing the other person was just as unsure, the believable misunderstandings (not the ridiculous Big Mis that so many romances get wrong) and the intelligence they each had. I admit that I wanted to kick his dad in the teeth, but I don't want to give too much away. I really recommend reading it sooner rather than later!
