What are your 2011 reading goals?
I aim for 125 books, and think I'll shoot for 50,000 pages.

I just don't know how you and others can read the immense volume you can. I don't think I could ever read a hundred books in a year.

I don't see how I have the time for it either. I have dance practice like 3 - 4 times a week, and when we get back, I'll be practicing on Saturdays. I honestly don't see how I can read this much. It might be because I stay up late into the wee hours ofthe morning to read. Yeah... That definitely has something to do with it! :D

When I was younger I didn't read non-fiction stuff either. This ended up being something I got into around 17 or so, then in my mid-20's I discovered how fascinating the stuff in text books was. So it's a fairly recent development for me : P.
It takes me about an hour to get there (since I work and go to school in the same place). So that's about 2 hours a day normally. If I don't have to go in then I spend 3 hours in the morning just reading. It's great!
You sound like my girlfriend though. When she was younger she would do the same thing. While her parents thought she was sleeping, she'd have a flashlight or reading light or whatever just cranking out the books : P.

Not a bad drive. I'm sure you love the mornings you don't have to go! :)
I'm reading all I can befor eI start college. I want to double major in Pre-Law and English, so I know I'll have a bunch of reading to do. Figured I may as well have fun now.
True.. I probably wouldn't be able to skip entire paragraphs in those. I'll get used to it in High School, I guess. I'm trying to get into a school that has only Honours & AP classes.. :)

Yeah, in college you might not have as much freedom with what you read, especially if you're an english major. A friend of mine majored in English and she had to read all kinds of stuff they told her too, luckily she likes all of it. You probably will too... I honestly couldn't do it. I don't like a lot of books labeled as "literary classics" and it really is a totally subjective idea, so for them to force it on me and claim what is a literary classic to them versus what I think is just silly.
Good luck getting into that school.

I'm also going to be reading a lot of supernatural books. I have a reading plan all set out so hopefully I can manage to finish that during t..."
Hi Natasha, I just looked through your book collection. And I'm somewhat curious about something. I noticed you've read a number of books on Physics, yet very few go above 3 stars. In lots of cases I noticed these lower ratings on any book conveying factual information. I was curious why you give them such low ratings, such as "Freakonomics", for example? Though I did notice you also rarely ever give out 5 stars, so maybe it is the way you approach the rating system. In any event, I'm just curious.

I, personally, love "literary classics." Although I understand where you're coming from about that. I didn't really think about it that way.
Thanks for the luck; I'm going to need it!

I have both "The Stand" and "Gone with the Wind" and at least part of the "Outlander series" and "at least 3 classics" on my definite TBR goal for 2011.

My goal is actually to read less, but read "better". I read a lot of cozy mysteries and fantasy, so I read a lot of books- this year about 600. But the ratio of "classics" and literature to fluff is skewed towards fluff. So, I'd like to read more classics and non-fiction which means probably reading less. I'm not saying read all classics, but at least increase the percentage to hopefully half, which I think is unlikely at that many books a year. So, less books.

@Meghan: That's a goal that I didn't really say, but is definitely there.
@Shay: Yeah, I could probably use more classics as well. 600 books this year??? That's a LOT. I would love to be able to read that much.

Dee, I guess there was something about looking at my list of books this year and going, gosh I read a lot of crap. I'm pretty sure I won't meet the goal in terms of actual number of classics, but if I at least read more than this year then that's progress. I'm kind of hampered by the fact that I think my brain is wired to like crap. But, reading crap is better than watching it on TV.
I keep fiddling with the 1001 books goal, but even at 10 books a month, it will be almost 10 years.

3 stars is my rating for I liked it, but it wasn't anything spectacular. 4 is really good. 5 is amazing. 1 is pretty bad. 2 is ok. That might make more sense why I gave a lot of three star..."
Maybe a lot seemed like common sense, but you don't know that for sure until you start building correlation models. You can't trust "common sense" when it comes to complex systems like the economy.
Ah ok, I see how your rating system works. I guess I was just kind of confused, because it looked like you were giving fairly low ratings to books that are just designed to convey information. Those types of books aren't meant to be literary classics with well crafted stories, they're just they're for informational purposes. See, for me, I tend to use a 4 for something I liked and a 3 for me is "well, it's just okay, but nothing to get excited about" and I thought a few of your physics books were things to get excited about haha. I thought if it was something you didn't like that much, why did you read so much in that genre : P.

***Edited to add:****
As of Nov 6 2011 I have hit my 25000 page goal. Still working on the 100 books, only 16 books away.

This year I'm going for 125 books or 50,000 pages, whatever ends up being higher, lol.

I'm too scared to calculate my "fluff" percentage. I'm sure it's higher than 80%.

That's a good page goal for every month. :)

Lol. Nothing wrong with escaping life with a "fluff" book! No judgments here, read what you like :)

I noticed that the books I started in 2010 and finished in 2011 weren't showing up. So I went back and deleted them, added them to "Currently Reading" then marked them finished and they showed up.

Another grand reason why I like this group. Page counting is grand.
