My GR friend Melodie posted this topic in our cozy mystery group, so I thought I would bring it over here. What were your favorite reads (any genre) of this past year? Melodie also asked for most disappointing reads of the year, so feel free to add that if you want. I was just trying to be positive for once :)

My favorite reads of 2010 were

Heidi, all yours are excellent choices. I must agree. I would add Finnikin of the Rock, Graceling, and Will Grayson, Will Grayson to the list. I loved them all!
They weren't all released in 2010, but I read them in 2010 and loved them.
Also as much as I hate to say it, I think I would add Mockingjay to the list. I know it's a difficult book, but it made a serious impact on me and I can't ask for a more powerful response than I had to that book, however depressing.
I didn't notice "any genre". I read Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters series and then bought and read every book she has written and loved them all. She was my big discovery of 2010. Her Wildwood Dancing and Cybele's Secret are YA. 2010 isn't over and currently reading the third book in C.L. Wilson's Tairen Soul series and LOVE them - definitely not YA. Re-read Atlas Shrugged and it is probably the best book I have ever read - first read it in college.
Terry, I couldn't agree more. I discovered Juliet Marillier this year too and just adore her work. I can't seem to get enough of her books. I think I'm going to re-read every single one of them in the next few months.Other than that, Graceling and Fire, The Mistborn series, Finnikin, Everwild, David Copperfield, and Book of a Thousand Days top the list.
My absolute favourite read and published this year is Son of Ereubus Its not YA, but more Adult Fantasy. I also just finished Last Sacrifice. Loved it =) Some other favourites and not published this year is The Hunger Games, Catching Fire Blood Promise, Shadow Kiss, The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set: City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass, Poison Study, The Riddle: The Second Book of Pellinor and The Singing: The Fourth Book of Pellinor. Puh!
Disappointing books...:
Burned, Tempted, Hunted, Let the Right One In and Voices of Dragons.

I am uneasy about it - not crazy about real dark stories so it may not be for me. Yet sounds intriguing.
All excellent picks Jaimie, except I have not read Forver Waiting, so I will add it to my pile since you have never steared me wrong about books :) Jen I have Prada & Prejudice in my tbr pile, glad to see you liked it :)
Forever Waiting is the last in a trilogy - it starts with
. It is historical fiction and I loved all three.
I'm excited to post my favs here too! It'll have to wait until after Xmas Eve dinner at my mums, though...
Heidi I wrote: "Jen I have Prada & Prejudice in my tbr pile, glad to see you liked it :)"Yes, it was really good. It's a quick read but it's well written and a very fun book, highly recommend it ;)
My favorite were:-
I don't read a lot of YA fiction.
Yes, I can appreciate non-romantic books, Heidi! lolz

It is absolute worth reading it. I read it within 1 day cuz i couldn put it away. It is abit of a "dark" story, but yet really beautiful. Its one of my favourite books ever ;)

"What is it about those Aussie authors?! So good. I haven't read anything by Moriarty yet, but she's near the top of my list for next year.

..."Another awesome Aussie author:
Favorite Reads: ANNA & THE FRENCH KISS by Stephanie Perkins (lovelovelovelovelove), THINGS WE DIDN'T SEE COMING by Stephen Amsterdam, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Beth Revis (it's coming out next month, but still. HOLY SNAP it's good) & the HUNGER GAMES trilogy, despite the whirlwind heartache. Biggest Disappointment: MATCHED. "WTF??" is all I can say about it without ranting. Excessively. & PARANORMALCY. It was so hyped (as well) & didn't live up to it. At all. Yet it's a NYT Best Seller? I still can't wrap my mind around that.
I read what turned out to be one absolute favorites this year. It's Looking for Alaska. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend his other books, they're all a cheap remake of his first book. If you plan to read John Green, don't read anything else but this. Seriously.
I read The Hunger Games trilogy this year, and it is my absolute favorite. I got a little obsessed, not gonna lie. =)
Here are some of the others I really enjoyed. AH, I love books!! =)

Wendy if you care (and you probably don't) I was not a fan of Lament. Shannen will likely respond that I am a book snob, but I am just being honest! I did like Shiver though :) I agree with everyone's pick of Hunger Games and Kourtin's pick of the BDB and Fever series. I think I forgot to add
to my list as well. I keep thinking of books to add! I hope 2011 is as great for books as 2010.
Of course I care Heidi! That seems to be the usual answer. People love Shiver and Linger but aren't such a fan of the Faerie books, which I suppose is why I haven't rushed out to get them. I have Will Grayson on my TBR list. Does it contain a character with an O name?
This seems like a random question but I'm doing a challenge in another group and I'm having a really hard time with books for O. I can use a book that starts with O, an author with the first or last name of O, or a character with the first or last name of O. I can't use words like 'of' in a title, lmao, I tried. Any help?
Wendy - I loved Lament but didn't think Ballad was as good, although I still liked it. Other people feel the exact opposite about them.

Nope. No "O" names in Will Grayson that I can remember. I looked at your tbr list and I think at least one the male characters from "The Host" had the last name O'Shea - would that count? Full disclosure, I hated the Host, but you know me... :)
Kristin - my girl crush audiobook narrator narrates
, so I am trying to track down the audio for that book (my lirbary doesn't have it. Good to know you liked it :)
Shannen wrote: "Wendy - I looked at my TBR list and here is what I found:

"Ohhh One for the Money! Read that! p.s. Shannen I didn't even think to look for "O" in the title. Durrr Heidi!

It would work but I'm turned off of Steph Meyers... I think I'll avoid that one.
Shannen - I read Outlander (my favorite book of all time) and all the Janet Evanovich books, unfortunately. The Only Alien on the Planet sounds excellent though, I'll add that one.
Thanks for your help! I need 3 more O's after this, but one will get me started.

Wendy wrote: "Thanks for your help! I need 3 more O's after this, but one will get me started." So I know I'm fanatical about this book, but if you've not read
yet, I'd definitely recommend it for one of your O's - it's by Orson Scott Card and it's brilliant!Hmm, what else..maybe
? Half the characters have the surname Otori, and I remember really enjoying reading it. Assassins and the like. :)Are you guys going through the alphabet in a year or something? Sounds fun.
I have Enders Game on my list as an E, lmao. I already took all the books from my Rainbow Challenge and put them in the list. I'm looking up the Nightingale book now.No, it's from the BDB group. I've been avoiding their challanges, but for their year challenge you have to read 52 books (one for every week in the year). And you have to follow this phrase 'I LOVE THE BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD, ESPECIALLY MY MAN ?' you pick your brother, and there are 2 bonus books if you dont have enough letters. Despite it's cheesy-ness, I couldn't resist. (Too many Zsadist fans, I went with Qhuinn.)
But a book for each letter of the alphabet is a great idea too! I may have to do that one next year.
