Heidi My GR friend Melodie posted this topic in our cozy mystery group, so I thought I would bring it over here. What were your favorite reads (any genre) of this past year? Melodie also asked for most disappointing reads of the year, so feel free to add that if you want. I was just trying to be positive for once :)

message 2: by Heidi (new)

Heidi My favorite reads of 2010 were The Help by Kathryn Stockett , The Book Thief by Markus Zusak , and On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta . Coincidentally these are some of my favorite audiobooks as well.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments Favorite reads - Linger, Clockwork Angel, The Iron Daughter, Glory, (all 2010 releases).

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Heidi, all yours are excellent choices. I must agree. I would add Finnikin of the Rock, Graceling, and Will Grayson, Will Grayson to the list.

I loved them all!

They weren't all released in 2010, but I read them in 2010 and loved them.

Also as much as I hate to say it, I think I would add Mockingjay to the list. I know it's a difficult book, but it made a serious impact on me and I can't ask for a more powerful response than I had to that book, however depressing.

Terry (Ter05 TwiMoms/ MundieMoms) (ter05) | 374 comments I didn't notice "any genre". I read Juliet Marillier's Sevenwaters series and then bought and read every book she has written and loved them all. She was my big discovery of 2010. Her Wildwood Dancing and Cybele's Secret are YA. 2010 isn't over and currently reading the third book in C.L. Wilson's Tairen Soul series and LOVE them - definitely not YA. Re-read Atlas Shrugged and it is probably the best book I have ever read - first read it in college.

message 6: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Will Grayson is up there on my list too :)

message 7: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Terry, I couldn't agree more. I discovered Juliet Marillier this year too and just adore her work. I can't seem to get enough of her books. I think I'm going to re-read every single one of them in the next few months.

Other than that, Graceling and Fire, The Mistborn series, Finnikin, Everwild, David Copperfield, and Book of a Thousand Days top the list.

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier Son of the Shadows (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, #2) by Juliet Marillier Graceling (The Seven Kingdoms, #1) by Kristin Cashore Fire (The Seven Kingdoms, #2) by Kristin Cashore Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson The Well of Ascension (Mistborn, #2) by Brandon Sanderson The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta Everwild (Skinjacker, #2) by Neal Shusterman David Copperfield by Charles Dickens Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale

I looked at some reviews of Son of Ereubus and I think I will add it to my to be read list. I am uneasy about it - not crazy about real dark stories so it may not be for me. Yet sounds intriguing.

Jen I have Prada & Prejudice in my tbr pile, glad to see you liked it :)

message 14: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments Forever Waiting is the last in a trilogy - it starts with A Silent Ocean Away Colette's Dominion by DeVa Gantt . It is historical fiction and I loved all three.

Jaimie (jaimier) | 1275 comments I need to add Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta to my list for obvious reasons - like it's the S#^*. also as Heidi reminded me The Year Of Secret Assignments (Ashbury/Brookfield, #2) by Jaclyn Moriarty

What is it about those Aussie authors?! So good. I haven't read anything by Moriarty yet, but she's near the top of my list for next year.

Another awesome Aussie author: Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah

message 30: by Melissa (last edited Dec 28, 2010 01:06PM) (new)

Melissa (melissaveres) Favorite Reads: ANNA & THE FRENCH KISS by Stephanie Perkins (lovelovelovelovelove), THINGS WE DIDN'T SEE COMING by Stephen Amsterdam, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Beth Revis (it's coming out next month, but still. HOLY SNAP it's good) & the HUNGER GAMES trilogy, despite the whirlwind heartache.

Biggest Disappointment: MATCHED. "WTF??" is all I can say about it without ranting. Excessively. & PARANORMALCY. It was so hyped (as well) & didn't live up to it. At all. Yet it's a NYT Best Seller? I still can't wrap my mind around that.

Okay I think that's it. :)

message 32: by Inez (new)

Inez Quijano (inezquijano) | 2 comments I read what turned out to be one absolute favorites this year. It's Looking for Alaska. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend his other books, they're all a cheap remake of his first book. If you plan to read John Green, don't read anything else but this. Seriously.

message 33: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 05, 2011 09:06AM) (new)

There are too many to list but here's a start:

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater Linger (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins The Help by Kathryn Stockett Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta Rules of Attraction (Perfect Chemistry, #2) by Simone Elkeles

Other books I loved:

Lament The Faerie Queen's Deception (Books of Faerie, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine, #1) by Bree Despain Deadly Little Secret (Touch, #1) by Laurie Faria Stolarz The Summoning (Darkest Powers, #1) by Kelley Armstrong The Secret Hour (Midnighters, #1) by Scott Westerfeld Perfect Chemistry (Perfect Chemistry, #1) by Simone Elkeles Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman Glimpse (Zellie Wells, #1) by Stacey Wallace Benefiel The Mortal Instruments Boxed Set City of Bones; City of Ashes; City of Glass (Mortal Instruments, #1-3) by Cassandra Clare Vampire Academy Box Set Books 1-4 by Richelle Mead

I beg to differ!!! What about Will Grayson???

message 37: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Wendy if you care (and you probably don't) I was not a fan of Lament. Shannen will likely respond that I am a book snob, but I am just being honest! I did like Shiver though :)

I agree with everyone's pick of Hunger Games and Kourtin's pick of the BDB and Fever series. I think I forgot to add North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley to my list as well. I keep thinking of books to add! I hope 2011 is as great for books as 2010.

message 38: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Of course I care Heidi! That seems to be the usual answer. People love Shiver and Linger but aren't such a fan of the Faerie books, which I suppose is why I haven't rushed out to get them.

I have Will Grayson on my TBR list. Does it contain a character with an O name?

This seems like a random question but I'm doing a challenge in another group and I'm having a really hard time with books for O. I can use a book that starts with O, an author with the first or last name of O, or a character with the first or last name of O. I can't use words like 'of' in a title, lmao, I tried. Any help?

Nope. No "O" names in Will Grayson that I can remember. I looked at your tbr list and I think at least one the male characters from "The Host" had the last name O'Shea - would that count? Full disclosure, I hated the Host, but you know me... :)

message 42: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Kristin - my girl crush audiobook narrator narrates Does My Head Look Big In This? by Randa Abdel-Fattah , so I am trying to track down the audio for that book (my lirbary doesn't have it. Good to know you liked it :)

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Wendy - I looked at my TBR list and here is what I found:

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon The Only Alien on the Planet by Kristen D. Randle Other (Other, #1) by Karen Kincy One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich

So I know I'm fanatical about this book, but if you've not read Ender's Game (Ender's Saga, #1) by Orson Scott Card yet, I'd definitely recommend it for one of your O's - it's by Orson Scott Card and it's brilliant!

Hmm, what else..maybe Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori, #1) by Lian Hearn ? Half the characters have the surname Otori, and I remember really enjoying reading it. Assassins and the like. :)

Are you guys going through the alphabet in a year or something? Sounds fun.

message 49: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I have Enders Game on my list as an E, lmao. I already took all the books from my Rainbow Challenge and put them in the list. I'm looking up the Nightingale book now.

No, it's from the BDB group. I've been avoiding their challanges, but for their year challenge you have to read 52 books (one for every week in the year). And you have to follow this phrase 'I LOVE THE BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD, ESPECIALLY MY MAN ?' you pick your brother, and there are 2 bonus books if you dont have enough letters. Despite it's cheesy-ness, I couldn't resist. (Too many Zsadist fans, I went with Qhuinn.)

But a book for each letter of the alphabet is a great idea too! I may have to do that one next year.

Brittany (finally graduated and can once again read for fun) | 1328 comments Qhuinn?? These brothers just keep popping up on me. I don't know about him... argh! Now begins the wait for Butch's book.
