message 1053: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I have developed a nasty habit of starting a book and stopping right in the middle, only to start a new book. I've recently started Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet (Charley Davidson, #4) by Darynda Jones and I am enjoying it but not as much as the third book. I'm only halfway through though so maybe I'll love it -- as opposed to just liking.

I really enjoyed The Raven Boys. I get the impression it doesn't have as much romance as her other novels, though (I haven't read anything else by Stiefvater).

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments Finished The Fleshless Man by Norman Prentiss ...pretty much crappy, I didn't like it.

Now working on, Renegade (The Elysium Chronicles, #1) by J.A. Souders . I have been floored in shock twice in as many chapters. It is captivating and dark all at the same time.

message 1057: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Personally I'm not a big fan of her writing but I did enjoy The Scorpio Races because of its uniqueness. I am going to try The Raven Boys eventually. Shiver (series) and Lament: The Faerie Queen's Deception didn't do anything for me.

I have First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones checked out from the library. I'm excited about starting this series - I've heard really good things about it. I have to finish the books below first, though.

I'm reading Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork for book club. Everyone's reading my suggestion this month, so this book had better be good. I like it so far, though.

Also, I just got Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor from the library and I'm about to start it. It's so pretty!

message 1059: by Sashana (new)

Sashana If you like humor in your novels then you'll definitely enjoy First Grave on the Right. Charley is a laugh a minute!

Can't wait to get my hands on a copy of Days of Blood & Starlight but I need to reread/skim the first book.

You can always read through our Q&As in the buddy-read we did to refresh your memory. I have to do this, too, though, as I forget everything important about a book only a few months after I've read it. Like, I need to read Hallowed by Cynthia Hand and have been wanting to read it for months. But I've forgotten everything about Unearthly and I don't have a copy.

message 1061: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I'll definitely look at the Q&As. Sounds much more appealing than rereading.

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments I finished Days of Blood & Starlight and I loved it. I pretty much did nothing else yesterday. Wake, read, eat, read, sleep.

Still reading Marcelo in the Real World but not very far in it. I just got Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff from the library so I'm thinking I'm going to start on that instead of First Grave on the Right...

So many books to read! Seriously, I want to read them all. And Ready Player One starts in a couple of days, too. I'm pretty stoked about that.

message 1065: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton by Kate Morton today. I thought it was beautifully written with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. It was obviously very well researched - I loved the WW2 bits. Those scenes were so vivid that I felt I was actually there! I found the pace of the novel, especially in the first half, to be rather slow. I thought the author spent too much time describing the various settings in the novel. It got really tiresome in places but the pace does pick up again in the second half. I loved the ending! The twist at the end completely surprised me. I wasn't expecting that! I'm usually quite good at predicting what's going to happen next in novels but that twist was a huge surprise!

message 1067: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading Like Dandelion Dust by Karen Kingsbury by Karen Kingsbury last night and I really disappointed with it. The plot was very predictable, irritatingly repetitive, contrived and not very well-written. The concept of the story was interesting but the author is not a good enough writer to pull it off. This novel was simply too formulaic, too sweet, too predictable, too simplistic, too everything I don't like. The entire novel had that 'la-la-land' feel to it.

Now I'm reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline which I'm in love with! Nerdgasms happening constantly over here!

Mary (merinwe) | 1043 comments Finished Crocodile on the Sandbank by Elizabeth Peters this morning and it was fabulous. I can't believe it took me so long to read it. Amelia Peabody is hysterical!

I'm still working on First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones, but my attention span is all over the place right now...

I started Outpost by Ann Aguirre a little while ago, then decided I'd rather listen to something instead, so I browsed my library's audiobook collection and downloaded Graceling, which I've been meaning to reread. It's done by Full Cast Audio, so it has a different voice for each character, which is...interesting. Some of the people are really good and some are fairly stiff. The main narrator has a SUPER low voice and tends to intensify strange sentences, like he's trying to make every moment as suspenseful as possible. It's odd. At the same time, it's a really fun way to listen to it. I think the only other audiobook I've heard done this way was The Goose Girl (great book, by the way).

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Finished Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and absolutely loved every minute of it! I'll be writing a review soon with exactly how I feel.

Now I'm on to The Scorch Trials (Maze Runner, #2) by James Dashner to get a jump start on the buddy read since I always seem to be behind.

I'm also listening to Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson audiobook on my way to and from work.

message 1072: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Tenderness Of Wolves by Stef Penney by Stef Penney this evening. Overall, I thought the novel was an interesting and mostly enjoyable read. There were some problems with it (not surprising in a debut novel), the plot became slow and tedious at times, there were too many characters - it was very hard to keep track of them all - and the author wrote all of her characters in the first person so sometimes it wasn't clear which character was doing the talking! I had to go back and re-read multiple chapters to figure out what was happening in the story, which was very annoying! The ending was very sudden. It came out of nowhere and it left too many storylines unresolved. I was left wondering WHERE is the rest of the story???

Stefani Robinson (steffiebaby140) | 807 comments I am reading The Sum of Her Parts by Alan Dean Foster . I am struggling a little because I haven't read the other books in the series, and there is literally ZERO plot recap. But the parts I am understanding are very very good.

message 1074: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I finished reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton by S.E. Hinton last night. This was my first time reading The Outsiders. I never managed to get around to reading it as a teenager but I've heard so many people say it is one of their favourite books so I thought it was about time that I read it finally. And now that I've finished the book I can't believe I waited so long! The Outsiders is a gripping and compelling read which is full of suspense. It was also extremely heart-breaking and touching at times. The novel is very well-written, considering S.E. Hinton was just seventeen years old when she wrote it. I was amazed with the amount of depth and layers in this book. It really is wonderful. Five stars!

message 1082: by Jex (new)

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments I've started a lot of books lately:
The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss - liking it so far

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson - very intrigued. I love tech history, even though I'm not the biggest fan of apple. Jobs made a huge difference in the tech industry so its interesting to hear about his life.

A Drizzle of Zombies (Book 1 of The Annals of Absurdity) by Joshua Price - I read the first edition of this book awhile back and the author has revamped it so I'm giving it a re-read. I was supposed to do it forever ago but kept putting it off and kind of forgot about it. Oops.

On deck:
The Death Cure (Maze Runner, #3) by James Dashner - waiting for the group read to start and trying not to start it early. I really want to start reading...

message 1083: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan by Charlotte Rogan yesterday. The Lifeboat is the debut novel of author Charlotte Rogan. It is a compelling, gripping and extremely thought-provoking tale. This novel tells the story of survival at its most basic level. It explores human nature and morality. It shows what happens to people while they are fighting to stay alive. The novel is a psychological thriller really. The book is very well-written. I really loved the author's writing style. I was completely engrossed in this novel from the very first page. The way in which Charlotte Rogan describes the moral decisions the characters have to make is quiet chilling.

message 1086: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished reading I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella by Sophie Kinsella yesterday. The first half of the book was quite good but I got a bit bored with it during the second half. The book was well-written and it had a lot of extremely funny scenes in it. However, the plot was very predictable. I made a guess when I was at 5% of the way in about how this book would end and I figured it out exactly! The author is not very good at adding "twists and turns" into her plots, which is the main reason I haven't picked up a book by this author for ten years. I thought the author would have learned something in all that time but apparently not!

True. I was browsing it and it seems more PRN than urban fantasy, but is Ilona Andrews, so I'm going to read it anyway, it was one of the recomendations from my no so secret santa, it should be good :o)

message 1095: by Aoibhínn (new)

Aoibhínn (aoibhinn) I've finished The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror by Christopher Moore by Christopher Moore earlier today. The plot was quite thin but there were tons of funny scenes that made me giggle and snicker (it wasn't funny enough to make me laugh out loud). However I got bored with this book pretty quickly. The humour was just so repetitive that it started to get on my nerves after a while and the jokes just stopped being funny. I didn't like the second half of the book as it just got too far-fetched and stupid. I really struggled to finish it.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Finished Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews .
Simply amazing!!! It was my favorite so far. Love Andrea. Love Andrea & Raphael interaction - although I felt like slapping him sometimes during the book. Loved to see Kate & Currant from an outsider's perspective. And all the secondary characters are amazing. Can't wait to read Dali & Jim's book (oh 2014, why are you so far away!!!!)

But now it means no more Kate Daniels to read, since I read everything it existed from Kate Daniels world, from Currant's POV to Julie's short-story, nothing escaped.

Mary was so right, I feel a big Kate-hole void in my life...

I'll read Fever series next... it will be my rebound book and I'm not that a big fan of Mac but I'm gonna give her another chance with Bloodfever (Fever, #2) by Karen Marie Moning , who knows, Magic Burns (Kate Daniels, #2) by Ilona Andrews also started as a rebound book and turned into an addiction.
