message 105: by Sarah Elizabeth Kemp (last edited Feb 16, 2012 08:05AM) (new)

Sarah Elizabeth Kemp | 2 comments My favorite childhood book would have to be Peter Pan. I read it so many times my parents eventually hid it from me

I have most definitely read more than one book at a time. ONLY if its good though.

My favorite place to read would have to be this little garden bench on the small part of my roof that only I can get to :) It's very peaceful

I read anywhere i can even in public

My 4 friends at my school are the only ones who like to read so we normally share whenever we get a good one. Plus our librarian has read-it-forwards

Sometimes it just depends on what level the book is or if I think of something that would make the book better

My favorite reading snacks are chocolate m&m's or chocolate popcorn- I have a BAD sweet tooth ^.^

The most money I've ever spent on a book was $30. It was all of Jane Austen's novels put together with a beautiful floral painted book cover

My three favorite genres are 1)Romance 2) Fantasy and 3) paranormal

My three favorite books are 1) Eon 2) Terrier-Tamora Pierce and 3) The Scorpio Races

Hmmm... I had a crush on Mr. Darcy- How could anyone not ^.^

You can't force someone to read a book b/c they'll hate it. Its inevitable.

message 107: by Allison (new)

Allison Kraft (allisonkraft) | 5 comments Your favorite childhood book?
I can't think of just one, but one of my favorite authors was Christopher Pike

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
Yes, though most of the time the second book isn't fiction, or is something I read in bits and pieces when I'm away from the main book (like the one on my phone that I read when I'm out and about, stuck in a line)

Your favorite place to read?
In bed at night, before I got to sleep.

Do you ever read in public?
I don't usually carry any books with me, but I'll read my Kindle app on my phone.

Your book lending policy?
I'm weird about my books. I don't like the spines to get bent, so I don't lend them too often.

Do you ever write in your books?
Never. I like to keep them as pristine as possible.

Your favorite reading snack?
Chips or cookies.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
Nowadays I buy mostly ebooks, and refuse to spend more than $10 on one. But in the pre-kindle days, I've spent as much as $30 on a hardcover, though I'd only go over $20 if it was a must-read author.

Your favorite three genres?
Paranormal romance, historical romance (though I prefer there to be a supernatural element in them) and light mystery humor (like Janet Evanovich)

Your three favorite books?
Too difficult to pick just three! How about 3 favorite series? Karen Marie Moning's Fever series, Lynn Kurland's time travel series and ... Harry Potter. :)

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
Hard to pick just one. I have a weird soft spot for Ranger in the Stephanie Plum books.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
It's hard to pick one book, since everyone has different tastes, and I agree with Rea above me: if you require me to read something, I'm less likely to enjoy it.

message 108: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Boucher (cheryllynnb) | 6 comments New here and already I have seen Rebecca and Jane Eyre mentioned and Wuthering Heights. Mr. Rochester was the one I fell in love with and I didn't have him pictured looking like Orson Wells altho' he and Joan Fontaine were just perfect together in the movie. All 3 of my books are my favorite movies.
Heidi was my most favorite book when I was young and I even named my daughter after the author. A great movie with Shirley Temple.
The most I have ever paid was $25 for the Anne of Avonlea and also Anne of Green Gables book sets and I found those in fantastic sales sections in a bookstore.
I have my own "Archie Bunker" chair where I always sit and read. But have taken books with me on vacations to the ocean, another wonderful place to sit and read.

message 109: by Jewelled (last edited Apr 03, 2012 07:37PM) (new)

Jewelled Trellis (jewelledtrellis) | 22 comments Your favorite childhood book? I have a collection of fairy tales that was my mothers. I read it over and over and now my children do the same. The best story was Poppy.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? I only read more than one at a time if they are different genres

Your favorite place to read? Curled up in bed before I go to sleep.

Do you ever read in public? Constantly especially with my kobo.

Your book lending policy? I don't mind if I know I will get them back in the same condition.

Do you ever write in your books? nope

Your favorite reading snack? I don't eat while I read but I will sip on herbal tea.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? $35.00

Your favorite three genres? historical romance, medical thriller, historical non fiction

Your three favorite books? Persuasion, Shackles of Honor, Cotillion

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Captain Frederick Wentworth

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? I wouldn't force anyone to read a book. Books are something that you choose to read because you are interested or love them not because you have to.

message 110: by Animalia (new)

Animalia | 14 comments Your favorite childhood book?
Any informational book that had info on animals or horses.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
Never, if I can help it.

Your favorite place to read?
A nice comfy couch.

Do you ever read in public?
Sometimes.

Your book lending policy?
My friends have different tastes in books then me so, no.

Do you ever write in your books?
Never.

Your favorite reading snack?
I don't eat. I starve or I eat whatever is handy in the fridge.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
$55

Your favorite three genres?
Regency (not sure if that's a genre), historical, romance.

Your three favorite books?
Frederica is my favorite, I don't really have a second or third... I love all of her other books though.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
I seem to like male characters from the Austenland books by Shannon Hale. I adore both Mr. Nobley from Austenland and Mr. Grey in Midnight in Austenland. Ok Mr. Darcy is up there as well but I figure that since half the female population is in love with him that I'll let him go so other females will have a better chance at winning him. ;)

If you somehow could make one book required reading for
everyone, what would it be?
I don't know if I could be that mean and subject the male population at school to read a a Georgette Heyer romance novel... Though, it is tempting. :D

message 111: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) At the age of 9 I fell in love with Mr Rochester. It was a couple of years before I discovered Mr Darcy, but I've never felt as strong a character as Elizabeth so I think Mr Bingham and I would suit each other better.

I can now imagine you curled on your sofa reading and will think of you when I do likewise.

message 112: by Jay (last edited Mar 11, 2012 01:59PM) (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Your favorite childhood book?
The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
Frequently as I love a printed book at home but my Kindle when I'm out.

Your favorite place to read?
If I had a bath that would be #1 but as I only have a shower it's the sofa - unless the sun in shining in which case it's a pub garden with a pint (or 2!) of beer.

Do you ever read in public?
As often as possible

Your book lending policy?
I've stopped lending books unless it's one I don't mind never seeing again.

Do you ever write in your books?
Absolutely NOT. I won't even turn down the corner as a bookmark. I don't mind post-its though to easily get back to a particularly good passage.

Your favorite reading snack?
Ginger nuts to dunk into my tea.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
Can't remember exactly but it was most of a week's pay.

Your favorite three genres?
Family sagas, science fiction and any story involving dogs (provided the author obviously understands dogs).

Your three favorite books?
Pride and Prejudice, Tara Road, Jane Eyre

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
R Daneel Olivaw

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
Jonathan Livingstone Seagull - it's fine to be different, just strive to be the best you can be.

message 113: by Amy (new)

Amy Keeley (safire_blue) Your favorite childhood book? Charlotte's Web by E.B. White

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Yes.

Your favorite place to read? Anyplace I can also get up and move around when the action gets intense.

Do you ever read in public? Yes.

Your book lending policy? I only lend books I've read thoroughly and even then the book has to be the kind that uplifts and inspires. The last book I lent was Small Gods by Terry Prachett. I encourage everyone to read that because it inspired me so much.

Do you ever write in your books? Only non-fiction.

Your favorite reading snack? I tend to forget to eat when I'm reading.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? $50 (for a dictionary)

Your favorite three genres? Fantasy (this includes Urban Fantasy), Romance (this includes Paranormal Romance), and the occasional SF.

Your three favorite books? The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, Small Gods by Terry Prachett, and Dengeki Daisy (a comedic romantic suspense manga series) by Kyousuke Motomi.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Not really in love with any of them, but the closest one would have to be Zero from Vampire Knight (another manga).

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? There's so many good ones out there, I'd have to let people choose for themselves.

message 114: by Shereen (new)

Shereen Vedam | 72 comments Hi,

I'm new to the group and thought I'd start my introduction by answering these questions.

Your favorite childhood book?
All Enid Blyton (UK author) books (loved them!)

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?
No. I have a structured personality. Though I multi-task at work, I have a side of me that likes to start at the beginning, make my way to the end, tick it off as completed and move on :) It's rare for me to even have a "to be read" book on my Goodreads shelf (I have one now only because someone gave me a book to read before I'd finished the one I was reading, lol). Oh yeah, I'm pretty cheap, too, so I tend to use the library more than a bookstore.

Being a writer who hopes to one day make her living at writing, I don't recommend that terrible behaviour pattern be adopted by other people (also, you might guess by the extra 'u' in behavior that I'm Canadian, and you’d be right, eh :-)

Your favorite place to read?
On the bus (only free time I have for reading).

Do you ever read in public?
Out loud? I might be forced to one day but it wouldn't be voluntary.

Your book lending policy?
I give away or sell anything I'm not keeping. I never lend. That's what libraries are for.

Do you ever write in your books?
Only on University texts I intended to keep forever.

Your favorite reading snack?
Fruit bars.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?
Sad to say but less then $10 and leaning toward less than $5 – I did mention that I was cheap, right?

Your favorite three genres?
Fantasy. Regency. Romance. In that order.

Your three favorite books?
May I tell you my favourite authors instead? That would be Terry Pratchett, Martha Wells and Hilari Bell. In that order.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?
Darcy, who else could it be? Though now I think about it, Legolas from the Lord of the Rings movie comes a pretty close second. It’s those ears! Who can resist them?

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?
Lord of the Rings, bet you saw that one coming.

Feel free to elaborate on your answers!
I did. Sorry if it was too long.

Shereen Vedam

Regina Jennings (regina_jennings) | 15 comments Your favorite childhood book? All Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? It's a bad sign if I start a second fiction book before I'm finished with the 1st. And I usually have a non-fiction going at the same time so if someone snooty asks what I'm reading I have a good answer.

Your favorite place to read? Outside or in my room.

Do you ever read in public? Of course

Your book lending policy? I lend a lot.

Do you ever write in your books? no

Your favorite reading snack? Oreos and milk

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? Besides college texts? $30

Your favorite three genres? Historical Fiction, Historical Romance, Biography

Your three favorite books? Gilead, These is My Words, Gone with the Wind

Have to agree with this choice. (Though it might be a toss up with Seven Day Magic)

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Never used to. But now always have one book on my phone to read on the subway, and one book on my nightstand to read before bed.

Your favorite place to read? On the subway (though unfortunately a good way to miss my stop)

Do you ever read in public? Implicitly

Your book lending policy? I lend and then regret, because I never remember what I lent or who I lent it to.

Do you ever write in your books? Never

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? I couldn't do that I think required reading kills a book.

message 119: by Lovey (new)

Lovey Valentine (loveyvalentine) | 6 comments Hi! I'm new here and I read through the posts so I thought I'd add my two cents, so to speak.

Your favorite childhood book? My favorite books were actually the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Yes. Now that I have a large home, I keep books in various rooms to read when I have a few minutes.

Your favorite place to read? Curled up in my cozy chair overlooking my rose garden.

Do you ever read in public? Yes. I'll read when I'm in libraries, waiting in line, when dining alone, while waiting for movies to start, and even in the checkout line at the supermarket.

Your book lending policy? My friends are always free to borrow my books - unless they're the favored editions I keep hidden in my bedroom.

Do you ever write in your books? I've written my name in the flyleaf of many a book. Back in my childhood, I also used to practice my "autograph" and compare my signatures over the years.

Your favorite reading snack? Tea and biscuits.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? That's a good question, but I can't really remember. I suspect it was a college textbook, though.

Your favorite three genres? Historical romance and biography are my absolute favorites. My third would have to be whatever happens to catch my fancy at any particular moment.

Your three favorite books? "Arabella" and "Friday's Child" by Georgette Heyer and just about anything written by Barbara Cartland.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? Mr. Robert Beaumaris from "Arabella." My husband doesn't know that part of the reason I agreed to marry him is because he reminded me of the Nonpareil.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? I don't believe any one book should be required for everyone because tastes vary so greatly. People who are forced to read books they don't enjoy may take something away from the experience, but I believe they are also left with a bitter aftertaste that could affect their future reading habits.

message 120: by Aerykah (new)

Aerykah Favorite childhood book? - I've read so many... I did really love the Trixie Belden series, though.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? - All the time! I've got 4 going right now.

Favorite place to read? - My bed & at the pool (only when I'm at my pool by myself). I also read in the car a lot, esp. while on vacation.

Do you ever read in public? - All the time!

Book lending policy? - If the book is easily replaced, I'm not too picky. Usually, though, I only lend to people that I know take good care of books.

Do you ever write in your books? - I usually write my name inside the cover. I mark favorites in poetry books. And (only because I own 2 copies) I marked favorite parts/quotes in Pride & Prejudice.

Favorite reading snack? - Skittles and/or Sweet iced tea. :)

Most you've spent on a book? - Not a whole lot... I do Garage Sales, Re-sell Shops, Amazon, & the Library.

Favorite 3 genres? - Ummm... Historical, Romance, & Mystery.

Favorite 3 books? - Gosh! That's hard! How about some Favorite Authors? - Jane Austen, Mary Connealy, & Ronie Kendig (and SO MANY more). And I really liked The Narrow Door at Colditz by Robert L. Wise.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? - If I told, it wouldn't be a secret. Would it? :o) Actually, it kinda depends on what I'm reading at the time...

Make one book required reading for everyone? - I don't believe in it. :o) I know too many people who hate to read because of books they were required to read (like for school). I was homeschooled, so my mom let me choose most of the books I read, as long as she approved of them. I think that helped develope my love of reading.

What's the most money I ever spent on a book? 15.00 for Georgette Heyer's Black Sheep.

My three favorite books? Its changing all the time, but usually Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Foundling by Georgette Heyer, and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Fictional character I am secretly in love with? Sherlock Holmes.

If I could make one book required reading, it would have to be...I don't know. I'd hate to make anyone do something they didn't really want to.

Deborah (deborahmh) | 11 comments Your favorite childhood book? Charlotte's Rose by A. E. Cannon.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time? Yes! But, they were only textbooks for college. So not fun reading.

Your favorite place to read? On the grass and wrapped up in my purple blanket with dark clouds above and wind blowing my hair back and forth. (I'm a romantic)

Do you ever read in public? All the time! If the book has captured my attention, I'll take it ANYWHERE.

Your book lending policy? It it's something I REALLY care about, it's more than likely not going to happen. But it depends on the person I'm lending it to.

Do you ever write in your books? Good heavens, no! The only writing I like in my books are the autographs of the authors!

Your favorite reading snack? String cheese, Ritz crackers, and then Skittles. Mmm.

What's most money you've ever spent on a book? 40 something. It was Jane Austen's complete collection!

Your favorite three genres? Romance, historical, and fantasy.

Your three favorite books? Oh goodness, I don't even know. Can I say my book? A Secret Fire, Harry Potter (I can't decide which one), and...Jane Austen's Persuasiion.

Fictional character you're secretly in love with? By far, Mason Carlisle in Shackles of Honor. And of course, Mr. Darcy.

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be? Again, can I say my book? Ha No, I would say, Harry Potter. Those books are amazing. Any one they'd choose would change their lives forever!

This was fun! Thanks for the great idea!

message 124: by Lovesfitness (last edited Sep 03, 2012 11:24AM) (new)

Lovesfitness | 3 comments Your favorite childhood book?

My encounter with books didn't start till I was in my teens so I would say Enid Blyton, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, and Agatha Christie

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?

Very very rarely since once I start a book I can’t seem to put it down until I finish it. I have been known to burn the midnight oil reading a thick book till the wee hours just so I would know the why.

Your favorite place to read?

On my bed, in the park, on the beach

Do you ever read in public?

Yup – the park, beach and the bus

Your book lending policy?

I guard my books very jealously and since I fear others might not treat my books the same way I prefer not to have to lend them again.

Do you ever write in your books?

Nope except for English Lit texts.

Your favorite reading snack?

Tea and sometimes chocolate and chips

What's most money you've ever spent on a book?

About £35 I think not including textbooks. I can never enter a bookshop and come out empty-handed.

Your favorite three genres?

Classics, English mysteries & thrillers, Historical & Clean Romances

Your three favorite books?

The Qur’aan, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women

Fictional character you're secretly in love with?

Why Mr Darcy of course, Wolverine, Rhett Butler

If you somehow could make one book required reading for everyone, what would it be?

I think everyone should be free to choose what they would like to read but that said I would recommend that everyone at least read something about the religious books of others just so we may understand better why people behave or do differently even if we don’t agree with them but we can respect them. I feel that the world would be a better place then.
