Christina | 26 comments Welcome, Tom....My husband, like your wife, bought me a large bookshelf for my many books and, well, the bookshelves seemed to have multiplied, as have the rubbermaid containers (all labeled with each book they contain). The books took over my bookshelf for my job and grace my nightstand, his nightstand, the floor next to my bed, a small area of the counter space by my kitchen and the passenger seat in my car. He has finally given up. But, the upside is, after all these years, I've finally got him hooked on reading too. So glad to have you as part of our group, Tom !!

Amanda | 7 comments I was reading these posts and decided that I must join this group. I am a bookaholic. Books are everywhere in my house. Its bad when you're moving and the moving people comment that the heaviest things in the whole house are the boxes of books. Then when you do move in your parents bring over a whole truck load of more books that you forgot at their house. I need books in my life. Without them I feel alone. I am a particular fan of Jane Austen and historical fiction. So excited to be here! Amanda

Geisha (MrsGeisha) | 2 comments Hi everybody. My name is Ginna and I AM a book-a-holic. I love to read a lot (duh), and I've started reading a dozen or more books that I have yet to finish and I work in a used book store. I get almost all the free books I want. I also like to go to the library and see what new books are in, YA or A, doesn't matter. And it feels great to around so many uber bookaholics like myself! :D

Jason (jasonct) | 25 comments Just wanted to take a min. and say hello to everyone here.

My name is Jason (and I am a book-a-holic), I am 31 and currently live in the nutmeg state.

I am mostly a non-fiction reader, however, as of late I have been rediscovering the classics and having a blast doing so.

I have a degree in music, am a pilot, and professional daydreamer.

I look forward to being a part of the group - please feel free to say hello anytime.

Glad you have you with us!

Anonymous (insomnicdreamer) | 2 comments Hello all. I am ifa and i am sure I AM A BOOK-A-HOLICS. I start reading with Enid Blyton... and Sydney Sheldon, Danielle Stelle, Manga Comics and many more. I love Gibran and Tagore.

I am curios of what people read, just to know what drives them and make my own appreciations to those books. You may see on my list that i have such "Oprah Books Club", "1001 Books Before You Die", "NY Times Bestseller".

And surely whenever I have money... I buy books.

Sam (ecowitch) | 42 comments Hi my name is Sam and I'm a book-a-holic and damned proud to be one. I am incapable of walking into a bookstore (or the book section of any shop) and leaving without one and can't go to the library without leaving with at least 3 books.

I recently went on a splurge to Hay on Wye (the original booktown) and left with a heavily ladened car containing 46 books costing a lovely three figure sum but damn it was worth it. They are now stacked in my living room and are refered to as the Hay Book Tower :-D

And any spare cash I have goes on books, especially in the awesome second hand book store in Castle Arcade here in Cardiff called Troutmark Books. I'm that bad all the books I've read have to go and live at my parents as I don't have enough space in my flat for all of my books hehe

fried.rambutans (friedrambutans) | 2 comments Hi Y'all! My name is Virna and I'm a book-a-holic - somehow vodka martinis can never quite replace the smell of freshly printed new books at my local bookstore. I used to live in the US and frequented B&N, Borders and Half-Price Bookstore quite a lot (how I missed them!), so when I went back home, I brought more books than clothes or shoes (and just a piece of paper called a diploma..) My room's practically overflowed w/ books and magazines, and dust bunnies. Being into photography and styles and architectures doesn't help either, since it meant saving money just to buy those expensive coffee table books. I don't have much money, but I'll have to say I have too many books. And I love all my books! HELP!

message 165: by Stephanie Rose (new)

Stephanie Rose Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am most definitely a book-a-holic! Although I haven't had the guts to start my own and often am too shy to comment, I spend most of my non-book-reading time on various book blogs. I keep a list on my desktop of must read books and always bring it with me to Chapters...though it usually just ends in me adding more books to the list.
I never join book challenges though as I like the freedom of being able to read whatever I want, whenever I want, although maybe one day I'll feel disciplined enough to do so! But for 2010, I am giving myself my own challenge: 50 books in 1 year. I'm terribly excited and cannot wait for January to come.

As for the quote on this groups main page...it summarizes me perfectly. My boyfriend often tsk-s me when I spend the last of my pay check on books......but it's oh-so-worth-it!

message 166: by Mary (new)

Mary Hi Book-A-Holics. My name is Mary and I am definately, without a doubt, a book-a-holic! As a little girl I have always had to have something to read and in my hand at all times. If we were driving some where I was reading a book. To this day I still do that!
Like most of you all, I to want a room full of books, with a possible window seat to read books, books and more books! Can't wait to read with you all!

Joanne | 1 comments Hi all I am Joanne and I am a bookaholic. If I am not reading a book, then I am reading about books. I have a Kindle and read on that, and it has become my friend and fellow adventurer. I love to get lost in s book, and to learn from a book. I love to cry with a book, and belly laugh with a book. Best of all I love to fall in love with a book. My Kindle, a book I am loving and a cup of Joe is all I could ever ask for.

message 170: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latashamd) Hello everyone! I think this is one of those "first steps" therapists are always talking about... I'm Latasha and I'm a book-aholic. I'm 21, and my mother will vouch for my condition and say I have been like this since kindgerten. I am now married and live in a not-so-large townhome with my husband and 5 furry children (as in dogs and cats). We have three LARGE 5' tall shelves that are jam-packed with my books. Thankfully, hubby clued into my compulsion and bought me a Kindle. Thus, no more space needed. I LOVE MY KINDLE! I have no clue how many books I have read, but I do know I have something like 100+ books on my to-read list. However, I am also OCD on top of my book addiction, so I cannot start another book until I am finished with the one I am currently reading. Not even a glance at the jacket cover! AHH! Oh well, at least I'm with people who can understand me now :)

The Romance Reviews (Carole) (The_Romance_Reviews) | 1 comments Hi, my name is Carole and I'm a bookaholic. No matter how I try to rid myself of this addiction, I can't. I don't think the 12 step programme will be any help here. LOL

Anyway, I'm the type who's willing to spend money on books, but will save them on clothes and food. My mother despairs of my towering pile of books, while I despair of not having enough time to read all my TBR's, which grows by the second. I think it's bound to grow even taller now that I've found my way here.

Because of this love for books, my friends and I put up a blog to record our reviews and musings on the books we've read. We're called The Raving Readers (http://theravingreaders.blogspot.com) coz we love to rave about books (LOL), though sometimes we can't find it in us to rave about anything, esp if the book is very dull. However, this is countered by the exciting times we have on the blog, with reviews and contests and giveaways. http://tiny.cc/8wBdB

Kimberly Howdy all,
My name is Kimberly and I'm a Book-a-holic. In the past month I have bought around 15-20 new books. In the last year I've bought over 200. My room is full of books I get from my favourite used bookstore and Goodwill. I have over 300 books in my bedroom and I always have to be dragged away from the shelves by my fiancee or we'll never leave the bookstore.

message 175: by Kimberley ❤️ (new)

Kimberley ❤️ Hello everyone, I'm so glad that I'm not alone in this pleasant addiction! I can't help it I love to read, I love surfing a site about reading and love to be surrounded by books. I go to the library at least once a week and I love to buy books online, from bookstores of all kinds and I can't even go into a bookstore without buying a book. I have 58 books on my to-read shelf at home because I love to have choice when choosing my next to read. It's just as simple as this I love to read and am not ashamed about it in anyway.

Right now I have 4 books that I'm reading (different genres). I read wherever and whenever I can. I'm doing my best to pass my love of books/reading on to my kids. ;)

message 179: by Bess (last edited Jun 21, 2010 12:20AM) (new)

Bess (Neli) | 2 comments "Hi guys, my name is Bess I'm a book-aholic and this is my story. It all began one cold winter's day 21 years ago when my father sent me off to my room with clear instructions to 'find something to play with' which as it turns out was code for 'stop talking to me while I'm watching footy'

Unsure of what to make of these instructions I wandered into my sister's room bored and cranky and lay on her bed. I was a fairly obedient child so I started to look for ways to entertain myself as instructed by dad, by hanging my head down over the edge of the bed and waiting until I could feel the rush of blood pooling in my face before jumping to my feet suddenly causing a head rush and dizziness that I would later discover could only be duplicated in certain carnival rides.

In the middle of my third homemade head spin, with my head hanging over the bed and my face beet red, I suddenly spied the corner of a book peeking out under the bedcover, curious I reached out to pull it from its hiding spot.

It was an old torn copy of Ramona the Pest by Beverley Cleary. Now I'd seen my sisters reading novels before but I'd never been interested in following suit and yet at that precise moment I suddenly found myself fascinated by the faded cracked yellow cover and without thinking too much about it (and also because my game was beginning to make me feel slightly quesy) I opened the book up to the first page and lay down to read... and from that moment on I was hooked.

These days the fascination has grown into an obssession, my books spill out of my library shelves in unabashed stacks, they litter my bedroom floor, sit in piles under my bed and cover my dressing drawers and bedside tables. I am drawn into bookstores like an addict, the draw of the bright covers and newly printed pages are cocaine to me, I confess that my addiction isn't restricted to new books, no, I haunt second hand book stores, prowling through book stands at fairs and perusing the dusty shelves at the back of charity shop book sections. Purchasing books is a compulsive and incurable habbit, it has become so bad that without even noticing it I recently discovered I had succeeded in drawing other people's attention to my secret compulsion.

I work in the city and there is a large bookstore between my office and the train station - a dangerous location for a bookaholic to be in I agree. This is a large city bookstore though so you can imagine the number of customers they must see in there. One day a few weeks ago after work I was skulking around the aisles in the book store, possessively eyeing out the books on the shelves I was mentally adding to my 'next purchase' list while I held a few options in front of me considering which I would take home when I suddenly heard someone speaking behind me. Surprised I turned to see a person I presumed (by way of her uniform) worked there and said 'excuse me?' and she repeated her comment, a funny little remark about one of the patrons who was leaving the store. I was a little taken aback since her comment seemed to suggest a strange familiarity with me, as though we were on friendly terms but I could have sworn I had never seen her before. Another coworker of hers who was standing nearby and overheard the comment must have thought the same thing and said curiously 'why are you saying that to her?' (she said pointedly but politely glancing in my direction) and her colleague laughed and said 'oh don't worry about her, she's a VIP member here'

That's right! While I may have thought my frequent skulking down these aisles was hidden in the crowds making their way through the store I had been identified by staff (I couldn't even recall seeing) as an unofficial frequent flyer! At that point even I had to admit I had a problem.

Now I'm off, work is over and I need to get some more miles in! Word to the wise - there is no cure for this affliction!"

Joe (joewig) | 7 comments Hey, my name is Joe and I'm a bookaholic. Yeah, and I'm PROUD of it. I've even taught my young boys how to be bookaholics and they’re PROUD of it too. I'm not sure yet whether I have more books on my bookshelves, basement and attic than I do on my Kindle ereader, but I'm sure it's pretty close.

I've been a bookaholic since I was in third grade and I've never ceased to carry at least 3 books with me at any given time. It's only been within the last year or two that I've begun to write summaries about the books that I read. It’s the only way to slow me down and also helps me retain the essence of whatever I'm reading or listening to (I love audiobooks now too).

message 183: by Rc (new)

Rc | 1 comments Hi, my name is RC and I'm a book-aholic. A bad one. My family and friends joke around telling people that I love my books more than them. At times, I don't know whether they know me better than I know myself or are just jealous because of my obvious love for my books. There has even been talk of an intervention.

I once took some of my books to a second-hand bookstore to sell and I walked out of there without having sold any plus $40 worth of new second-hands.
The bedroom I share with my husband is the smallest bedroom in the house because I wanted the space for my books.
Every single employee from every single bookstore in my city know me by name.
If I'm not reading I'm talking about books I've read or books I'm going to read next.
My husband tells me that although I have a problem, he loves me enough to see that I get help and to see that my father pays for what he did to me.

You see, it's my dad's fault I'm such a book worm. Throughout my childhood he worked the craziest hours and would arrive home late at night when I was asleep and be gone before I woke in the morning. It got to the point where the only times I saw him were on his rare days off and he was usually sleeping. Then one night he came home and woke me up, he was dripping wet from the rain and reeked of the docks where he worked and cigarette smoke. In his arms he held a plastic shopping bag, 'Wake up baby, I got something for you' he whispered excitedly. Sitting up so he could sit down next to me he up-ended the bag and out falls hundreds of books (not really but even now my mind tells me there were hundreds of them). All Dr Seuss books.

And so my addiction began...

Sandi *~The Pirate Wench~* (thepiratewench) | 3 comments Hi everyone..Im Sandi and Im a bookaholic..and I have no plans to recover!I love the feel of books..I love the smell of books..when I go into a used bookstore my heart races..the palms sweat..the thrill of finding that lost one you read so many years ago..of finding new ones to read...I tune out the whole world..the hunt is on..the finds are complete joy!..I would love to own a bookstore..then maybe I would have some new clothes & food in the fridge..I have a book in my "book" room..in my car..at work...by my treadmill...well at least Ive found a place here that others will understand me..

Mary (madamefifi) Hi, my name is Mary and I am a book-aholic. It's been about one and a half hours since I last bought books (curse you, Amazon!). I've been a reader as long as I can remember and I'm hoping that with the help of GR and this group, I will read only really really good books from now on. John Cicero | 1 comments Hi Everyone,

My name is John Cicero and I am a fantasy/adventure author and yes a book-o-holic. My passion for writing and reading is driven from the joy I receive from reading my stories to my children.

Watching the expressions on their faces as I take them on a journey through the magical pages of my imagination is what drives me to find the time to write.

My recently released novels are in the Rainbow's Shadow Trilogy. They are Rainbow’s Shadow and the Tablets of Fate and Rainbow’s Shadow and the Covenant of Wisdom.

As a passionate writer in Northeast, Ohio I have been fortunate to hit the Best Sellers list with 'Tablets of Fate' and am on track currently with the 'Covenant of Wisdom'.

The final novel in my trilogy is Rainbow’s Shadow and the Other Side of Paradise which is currently in development.

If you have a moment check out my website and Rainbow's Shadow Trilogy today at... www.RainbowsShadow.com

Take care, John

Lindy (LindyBarnes) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Lindy and I'm a bonafide bookaholic. I did not join with any intention of kicking this habit - ever! I am a newly retired elementary school teacher and was an assistant to the head librarian prior to teaching school. I own way to many books (is that possible?) and have recently put the brakes on my book buying habit by frequenting my local library more often. However, many of the books I want to read are not owned by my library and it is one of the largest county libraries in the country. ?????

Lisa - #42 - I think we are both in the same boat:) and perhaps sinking and bailing like mad due to the weight of soooooo many books :-D

Tricia Douglas (teachgiftedkids) I, too, am a book-aholic! I used to say that I needed a book to use for a lesson in my classroom so, of course, I needed to buy it! But I just retired in June and am still buying myself books! They are like my children and are stacked neatly on my shelves where all my teaching materials used to be. I live by myself with three cats and they don't really care what I do! Books are an inexpensive form of entertainment and so nice to go to bed with at night!!!

WTF Are You Reading? | 7 comments Like Robbin and Mona...I too am a Book-aholic. Isn't part of any addiction the fact that you HIDE your stash?
I do that very well, in the form of Audiobooks and E-book downloads. I have 5 books on my currently reading list and my to read is growing daily.
As far as the frequent-reader program...I too
have been guilty of that.
I used to work in a mall and there was a large bookstore downstairs that used to hold books for me
until payday. My bookhold got so large that I soon had my own shelf under the counter.

Dawn (just_read01) | 27 comments After carefully checking out some of the other groups (Banned Books, Cozy Mysteries), I decided to join Book-aholics because I love to read it all! I read before work, during breaks, after work, waiting for trains, during commercials sometimes - I used to read at family parties until I was deemed rude for doing so. :) To be fair though, I was introduced to stories at a very young age and raised on books, and they've been good friends to me throughout my life.

Craig Cunningham | 1 comments I am completely new to Goodreads. Hello My name is Attorney Craig Cunningham and I am a BOOKAHOLIC. I am new to Goodreads, and I love the opportunity to speak with people about books. I love to read, and I love talking about what I have read. I primarily read non-fiction of every genre, but I also enjoy a good Stephen King type novel, as well as the Classic Novels. I know that the Western Canon changes, but I love the Western Novels that were part of required reading in high schools. I am disappointed that now in high schools, teens are not expected to read these same novels. I have two teenagers, and one preteen, and none of them seem familiar with some of the Western Canon, particularly in the areas of philosophy, Greek and Roman myths, and English Literature.I am interested in talking about the Law. I am an attorney, author, and Professor. I teach at one of the nation's best law schools, and also work in providing higher education to the undergraduate community. I thoroughly enjoy being an attorney. I work in the area of family law, criminal defense, and business litigation. I also teach law students as well as undergraduate students, and I have advanced degrees in history. I teach American History, the history of the Civil Rights Movement, and American Government. I love books. I enjoy the tactile elements of books. I love feeling the texture fo the book in my hand. I look forward to participating in this group. I have articles which may be found at http://www.trcb.com/author/ccclaw.htm I would enjoy an intellectual conversation about the law, the justice system, the inequities that citizens perceive, the use of Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the Judicial use of State Codified Child Support Guidelines, any topic (less)
