I dont think I will ever like 'Jonah'. For me it'll always be the name of that hilarious thug on the TV show "Summer Heights High". I dont know if ..."

lol, everybody's got their special name. For example, I don't really like the name 'Bella,' but one of my friends is like SURE she's going to name her future kid Bella. :P

I dont really like 'Bella' either.
I discussed this in the thread 'dreams for the future' but my absolute favorite names ever are: Aviva, Naomi, James or Alexander

message 53: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) B: Percy, Jonah, Milo, Quincy, Logan, Liam, Todd (yes I like Todd Hewitt, but Todd is a family name too :D)
G: Tamsin, Lucy, Olivia, Annakate

Lol, when I was younger I would literally match up first names and middle names to create my future kids' names. Looking back, I realize that was a bit creepy.

Eliza | 13 comments Not many books have changed my life. People change my life, but books have some little influence.

message 56: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Oh, I forgot Charlotte's Web. When I was about 6 or 7, my parents found me sobbing on the floor of our den. When they asked me what was wrong I informed them that (view spoiler). (Yes I know the spoiler warning is probably unnecessary, but oh well)
My dad told me that I had just read my first really great book.

message 57: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Books and words have certainly changed my life. Stepping Heavenward for instance. It changed me exceedingly.

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments FB was brilliant. It's one of my favorite Bayern Books.
And there's not really any ONE book that's shaped me- there's books that play big roles in my life (HP!!!!), but I take something from just about every book I read and it becomes part of me.

message 59: by Danna (new)

Danna I do not think a book has changed my life so far... I can't think of a book that reached such level of beauty.

message 60: by Miss Amelia (new)

Miss Amelia (missameliatxva) I agree, Danna. There are several books that I love, and ones that have touched me, but it takes a little more to 'change my life.' That's a pretty powerful statement!

message 61: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Well, I think what Rae said was pretty close. At least in my case.
There is little bit of most books I read inside of me that somehow effects they way I think or see things.

message 62: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Books and online groups like this are how I interact with and experience the world from my own little corner of the world- and each time I open a book and get lost in the world of that book, I absorb things from the book- therefore, technically almost every book I read may change my life, but it's all of the books I've read and will read in the future change my life- I just don't know what my life would be like if I didn't read as much as I do.

message 63: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments When you love to read and do it frequently, books in general shape your life. But there are certain ones that influence you more than others.

On Thursday I was at a craft fair, where I bought a drop spindle with instructions on how to spin. I've wanted to know how to spin for a reeeeeaaaaaalllllllyyyyyy long time. Coincidentally, that dream came from two books (The Far Side of the Loch by Melissa Wiley, and Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce). That's the type of book that does more, although not always in that specific way. A book can inspire you, make you want to do/be something, and even change the way you think.

message 64: by Abby (new)

Abby (abbygould) Books have changed my life, especially The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. That book showed me the power of words over people.
The Harry Potter books changed my life in a different way. They taught me how to be a good person, and they were such a big part of my childhood that I will never abandon them. That's what makes books life changing to me.

Plus books in general have had such an impact on my life; I taught myself to read when I was 2 1/2 years old, and I think if my parents hadn't read to me every night, I would be a different person today.

message 65: by Vered (new)

Vered (vered_ehsani) Love this thread! I know some books have totally impacted on my life (either my perspective or attitude shifts, I gain a new understanding and appreciation for a certain kind of person or group etc). Reading generally is so important for language development and (depending on how widely you read) opening your mind to new ideas. I think it's good to try to read from different genres, including non-fiction (some of which is actually interesting!)

message 66: by James (new)

James (theadventurousbookreader) A lot of books change my life in some ways. The Book Theif changed my life because I'm more thankful that I wasn't born in World War II and it must of be terrible to live in that peroid if your a child. Ther more example on books change my life, but I might talk too much if I explian all the books that change my life.

Paul Westmoreland | 39 comments Every few years I read Tuesdays With Morrie. It has some helpful and important truths for every stage of your life. And it changes the way you look at life and the future. A brilliant masterpiece, and a wonderful book. I recommend it to everyone.

That sounds really tough. You should try writing a book about it. Which books helped you the most?

message 71: by Casey (new)

Casey (andshesfearless) i think books can certainly change lives. if not the way you act, then your perspective on it. if a book is really well written, you'll feel like you've lost a friend at the end of the series. Harry Potter series, was the most imaginative amazing thing. it changed my life for good, i know so much about that series, and i've tried to model myself after a few characters, they're all role models for me. in character and in person. the catcher in the rye was a life changing book too, people say it all the time, but when i figured out what the catcher in the rye meant, my heart just went out to holden. time and time again i have to come back to that book. a lesser known book, Halfway tothe Sky by Kimberely Bradley, i read it when i was in grade school, and it was a good book, because it was about a twelve year old running away to climb the Appalachian Trail. it showed me that i can do whatever iset myheart to do, whether it's acing a test, or running away to climb a lot of mountains. a lot of books have shown me that i can do whatever i put my mind to. harry potter being the prime example. i think books can change people.

Thank you so much Christy! I hope your children do get some good out of it. Let me know what they think :) It's people like you who make it worthwhile to stick to my guns and write what I know in my heart is needed!

message 73: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 29 comments I DEFINETELY believe that books can changes lives. The written word is so powerful, it blows my mind at times. A book that has changed my life is
Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It's a true story about the author, his former teacher, Morrie and their final lesson on life. (Just saying ahead of time this is NOT a spoiler) Morrie has ALS (Lou Gherig‘s disease) and as it consumes him, taking him one step closer to death, he teaches Mitch what the important things in life really are. I'm not going to go into details 'cause I seriously think you all should read it, but I'm just going to leave it at: It's incredible. It was one of those books that made me laugh, cry, smile and feel incredibly inspired all within a relatively short read. I learnt the life lessons right along with Mitch and it really gave me a whole new outlook on life. It is a sad book as Morrie’s death is inevitable, but it definitely wasn’t a depressing book. Most of the book was just extremely inspiring and in the end I was crying not just because of the loss of a beautiful person, but of the happiness he brought to this world. My words don’t do this book justice. GO READ IT NOW haha! J

Kari Jennifer (karijennifer) | 20 comments Yes. If you feel alone in the world, you're actually not. Read a book, they help you escape reality. It may only be for a couple hours, but you can ALWAYS live in your dreams.

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

They can definitely change the world! Not all at once, of course, but one person at a time. Maybe they help you learn to dream, or to look at the world differently because of something the author pointed out. Or maybe that book got you hooked on books, something that can definitely change your life. They can help you escape from stress, helping you be healthier and have a happier countenance. There are hundreds of ways that a book can change your life.

message 77: by Taliah (new)

Taliah Lagons | 194 comments Most of the comments here (not that I've read all of them) seem to be about novels. When I looked at the topic my thoughts immediately went to non-fiction, books and words help us to learn so obviously they make an impact on our lives. Also facts (or even just hints of facts) within fiction, like reading a murder mistery and getting interested in forensic science.

Or how about words independent from books all together? Like, a text message between friends? In the right situation, a few words (such as "you are a wonderful person" or "the medow is booby trapped") could do a lot.

message 78: by Jadyn (new)

Jadyn (fldsmdfr) Yeah, I agree that they can even if it is fiction.

message 79: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (Oceanwhisper) | 28 comments If you're a very emotional reader, like myself, I say books can and probably will change your perspective of things (Watership Down completely changed my opinion on rabbits!) and once I read a scary shark book and I wouldn't go in the water (not even my own swimming pool!) because I was scared a shark might come! I was relatively smaller then though xD

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

YES!!!! I think books can change people's lives. Those are my favourite type of books, they inspire and they make people think, and it can totally change someone's opinion, for a BETTER VIEW.
