SOLVED. Phoenix - Friend of boy who doesn't know - dies, rerises..... [s]

This is a pretty old one, and it's making me a bit crazy.

The young boy befriends what he thinks is a dragon (I think) who helps him with whatever his life's issues are (I don't recall those at all) and the boy is devastated when his friend dies in a burst of flames.

Little did the boy know that his friend was a phoenix, not a dragon, and has risen again from the ashes.

Happy ending.

Sounds like David and the Phoenix by Edward Ormondroyd (better known for Time at the Top, a favorite of mine). It is back in print, so will be easy to find.
