Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) (It looks like many of you are in favor of the name - Cover to Cover challenge. There are a few more days before the polling ends, so we'll wait until then to confirm the name. Meanwhile I'll use that name for now.)

Welcome to the 2011 Cover to Cover challenge group (formerly known as the 144 Books in 2010 group). This challenge runs from January until December 2011. In this challenge, all participants choose a reading goal from among 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and Sky's-the-limit (250+) targets. For each target, folders have been created, where paricipants create their reading logs. For instance, if you decide to pursue a reading target of 50 books in 2011, please head to The 50s Club folder, and create your reading log. How to set up your reading log is up to you - you can do it in any of the bazillion ways possible. If you need some ideas, you can check out some of the 2010 reading logs.

What books are allowed?
The type of books allowed include the same books allowed for the challenge last year. The categories include print books, ebooks, audiobooks, manga, graphic novels, short stories or anthologies (for counting books that are short stories, check this thread). No children books allowed (For what counts as a children's book, check this thread).

Target upgrades and revisions (optional)
As you go through pursuing a target that you set at the beginning of the year, you may find that you will easily finish your challenge with months to spare or that your target is too ambitious to achieve. If you reached your set goal, you can either move your thread to the "I Reached My Goal" folder, or better, you can upgrade your challenge to a new target. You can choose to upgrade or revise your target at any point during the challenge. However, to make it more challenging, we are going to have three review months (April, July and October), during which you decide if you wish to stay with your current goal, or move to a higher/lower goal. This is entirely optional and you need participate in this only if you wish. Lisa or I will send a broadcast to all members prior to the start of the review month. Whenever you change your goal, simply move your reading log to the correct folder.

Readathon (optional)
Four times a year (Feb, May, Aug, and Nov), a week-long readathon will be held. The readathon falls conveniently between review months. One day of this readathon will be the 24-hour reading spree, so that all those who like the one-day format can take part.

Thank you so much for all the work you have done on this...I like the new format...now I just have to decide...do I want to go for 150 or take it easy on myself and just do 100....For this year I'm 3 books short of 144 so I expect to make the 2010 goal with a few to spare.

message 13: by Connie (new)

Connie (grundig) | 57 comments I am 5 books shy of 144. I am thinking I will make it since there are still a couple of weeks left in the year. If not, I came close and read more books than I thought I would.

message 14: by Elhara (new)

Elhara | 11 comments For sure I'm not going to make it to 144, being less than half way at this late date. Still...the anticipation of listing a finished book onto my tally has really been quite fun. I've never kept track before. The proposed ideas for 2011 look like good options; so thank you so much for the hard work and careful thought that has gone into its creation. No matter the number of books read, I'm sure I speak on behalf of many who have participated and enjoyed this challenge and look forward to a fresh start in January.

message 15: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I have 9 or 10 books to finish to get to goal. But I'll finish one today and hopefully get some good reading done today.

If you scroll down the home page, you should see them. I didn't want to bump those folders up the page until the new year is in. But you should see them after the 2010 folders.

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) I'm glad you're all finding the new format much better. I like it too - especially going in for a target that I believe I can reach, and then revising it later, if needed. At least, by the end of the year, I'll feel like I accomplished something.

message 18: by LynnB (new)

LynnB I see that no one has signed up for the 250 level. It seems as if you can get over 200 in the year, that 300 or more isn't that hard. Interesting that there's that jump.

I found them and already made my 2011 folder. Thanks.
I'm setting my goal down a bit. I am starting out at reading 72 books and move upward.

I didn't reach my 144 books this year but I'll continue to aim for 150 in 2011. Everything looks really organized!

I"ll change it January 1st.

message 26: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) Great work, guys! It'll be a fun year!!

message 27: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I have 9 books to finish in a week. haha don't think it's going to happen at this point. I did better this year than last so that is all I care about. In 2011 I'm going to do much better since I set up under 150 books. I refuse to go lower than what I did this year.

message 28: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Sorry guys, I had to slip out for a few days. Last hectic week at work, then flying across the country to meet family, playing with my niece who has got a truckload of games for Christmas and now I'm her default partner in all games. So I got up early today just to try and catch up!

Stephanie, if you didn't find the 2011 folders yet, please check my message #16 of this thread, where I've explained it.

And yep, ditto to Lisa, name change will happen on the 1st.

Ivy (luvbug) I got an ARC copy of a Agent X by Noah Boyd that is a mystery.

I don't get many ARC books but wanted to know if I get any more in the coming year if I can count them as part of this challenge when I read them???

Of course you can count them!

message 31: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) As long as they aren't children's books you can count them.

message 32: by Ivy (new)

Ivy (luvbug) Just wanted to make sure...this one is turning out to be very good...will have it done before the new year I am sure but have put my name on several here at the Goodreads First Reads and wanted to make sure I could count them. I was in a challenge last year that did not let me count them...

Rob (kanata) Hi, new to the challenge this year and had a question. Do radio plays that are listed on here as audio books count? I'm unsure since they haven't been published as a real book like most audio books have been done previously yet they are also readings of correspondence over an hour or so. What do you think?

Dorothy (vilette) | 208 comments Robin wrote: "Hi, new to the challenge this year and had a question. Do radio plays that are listed on here as audio books count? I'm unsure since they haven't been published as a real book like most audio books..."

Interesting question. I'm currently reading a published play in book form and had just assumed it counted....but I might have had the same question if on audio.

message 37: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) Audio books do count, but I'm not sure what you are talking about Robin.

message 38: by Dawn (new)

Dawn rizzi (dawnie278) Thanks to all the people that help mantain our group. Happy New Year!!!

Rob (kanata) Lisa S wrote: "Audio books do count, but I'm not sure what you are talking about Robin."

Um..I guess I just mean plays in audio book format. Instead of being written and published as books they were put out as audio books. If that makes sense? Not a big deal if it doesn't. I was just curious.

message 40: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I don't see why it wouldn't count, so I say go for it.

Yes...I know just what you mean...and I can see why you asked the question. After all you wouldn't count podcasts I don't think...but my opinion is that since it is literature then it should count.

message 42: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I say go for it. I get mad when I have samples on my nook to read and can't count them. Or some of the shorter books. But now I'm counting the books. And I decided if I have alot of the other instore only downloads or samples I'll make them on another page of my journal so even if I count them as one or even 2 reads it's good.

my rough calcuation for audiobooks is about 30 pages an hour - HTH...but since I use audible more often than not, the parts line up with the chapter breaks, so its easy to do the math

message 45: by Rob (new)

Rob (kanata) Thanks for the opinions. Since they come from audible I'll count them. Was worried about seeming to pad my numbers to myself.
