The answer to your question is "both."
There are flashbacks to Jack's life when he is 20 years old in Shipwreck Cove, living among the pirates. The flashback plot is then resolved when Jack is 25 years old, working as an honest merchant officer for the EITC, under the aegis of Cutler Beckett, who is the Director of West African Affairs for the EITC.
It's a long book, as I noted earlier -- basically, it's two books for the price of one, under one cover.
A real bargain!

In excerpt 4 we see 20 year old Jack Sparrow swilling rum and talking about going on a treasure hunt with his best pal, Christophe. They're in a tavern in Shipwreck City (shown in the third Pirates of the Caribbean film) known as The Drunken Lady.
I fear in the scene that Jack has drunk more rum than he probably should have...
Does this surprise anyone?

And if I live outside the US, can I have it by the release date?
Thank you for your great and hard work! I think it will be a success! =D

My editor at Disney assures me that the novel will be available as an e-book at the same time it's released in hardcover. (The price will be $22.99, lower than what's currently quoted here on Amazon.com)
Buying the novel as an e-book is probably your best option for getting it quickly once it is released.
I believe that you can pre-order the book now on the Barnes and Noble site, and Amazon's Canadian and UK associates. But my editor assures me that the "pre-order" button for the book will soon be activated on the US version of Amazon.com. When you see a blue cover rather than the maroon ARC (Advance Reading Copy) cover, you can probably click to pre-order.
I check this page whenever comments are posted. Let me know if you have any trouble. I'm sure you'll be able to pre-order here on Amazon by the end of February!
Thanks for the kind words...glad you enjoyed the excerpts!

Ayisha also gave Jack a ring so he could use it to return to Zerzura. It was made of rose gold, with blue enameled insets, set with a large bezel of red coral.
Those were Ayisha's two gifts to Jack, Ahdom.

I've a couple of questions to ask you:
1) What will happen to Beckett's brothers??? And to his father??? I'm really curious XD
2) Is Mercer omosexual in your own opinion? And Cutler?
3) Who's Beckett's mother??
4) Why don't you write a novel about the Swanns???? For example, nobody has said anything about Weatherby's wife? And, how did the Governor Swann meet Cutler??? Maybe Beckett was interested to Miss Swann and Weatherby was jealous... ok ok, I stop myself; but I really hope to read a second novel about POTC's past written by you!
My compliments for everything... and thank you!!!
A kiss from a italian loyal follower
PS: I apologise for my bad english

Your English is excellent, congratulations. I'm glad you liked my novel. I hope you'll recommend it to pirate-loving friends!
It's not up to me what books get written in the Pirates of the Caribbean universe. Disney owns Pirates of the Caribbean, and they are the only ones that can commission a book to be written within that universe.
I never thought about Mercer's sexual orientation. If I had guess, I would think that he achieved gratification from killing and abusing people. He certainly was a cold-blooded killer.
I think Cutler Beckett's "thing" is power. Having power over people and situations, and power due to being wealthy and having a high position is how he gets his satisfaction.
I have no idea what happened to Beckett's brothers and his father. I suspect they were quite annoyed when the youngest, smallest member of the family achieved what they had always wanted...tremendous wealth PLUS a title.
Hope that answers your questions.
Best Always,
-Ann C. Crispin

Obviously I'm publicizing this novel both to friends and unknown people (through an italian Fanfiction site... I'm writing a fiction inspired by your).
All the best and Happy new year!
PS: I continue to hope that Disney asks you to write more books about POTC's universe... It will be the desire that I'll express for the new year! = D

I posted a link to the first excerpt of the book here on my Goodreads profile.
This is the longest novel I ever wrote...took me three years to generate the story, get Disney approval, then write the novel. It clocks in at well over 600 pages, and took me about 15 months to write.
