It's that time of year again! What are your top five science fiction/fantasy novels published in 2010?

Note: I will be using a weighted voting system to tally the votes, so PLEASE rank your top 5! Don't say "in no particular order" because I will simply DECLARE that your order. ;)

5. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, by N. K. Jemisin

I actually read nine books published this year! I'm so proud of myself! :D

I fail as a scifi fan this year. I read a lot more horror this year than anything else, and the scifi/fantasy I read is mostly 1-5 years old. I did read and enjoy the heck out of The Second Coming though; put a mark down for "first place" for that.

Jon -- Sorry, should've been more specific. I wanted your top five books total, between science fiction AND fantasy -- not a top five in each genre. Can you condense?

Checked out your blog entry; glad you found Robin McKinley this year! She's one of my favorite authors, and The Hero and the Crown is one of my favorite books. :)

Since my TBR has gotten so huge, there were several 2010 books I didn't get to yet. Some I even bought, but are still waiting to read.

That said,

This has been my most prolific year of reading thus far, and I had quite a few that were published in 2010 to choose from! That said, my favorites would be:

1. The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
2. Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay
3. Dreadnought by Cherie Priest
4. The Alchemist and the Executioness
5. Bone and Jewel Creatures by Elizabeth Bear

I loved TheWay of Kings because it feels like I'm there for the beginning of a great epic!

I loved Under Heaven for it's profound beauty.

I loved Dreadnought for being a rip-snorting fun adventure tale!

I loved The Alchemist and The Executioness for being completely unique, and one of the mist fascinating worlds I've ever read or heard about.

I loved Bone and Jewel because it was an old fashioned fable told in a fantastical manner. Plus, it was my first introduction to Elizabeth Bear, and I think I've found another author whose entire catalogue I must read!

Laurel -- Yay! I was not expecting anyone else to mention Bone & Jewel Creatures! I technically found Bear last year, but this year is the year she became one of my "buy immediately, and in hardcover" authors. Except that, you know, her sci-fi is all straight to paperback. :( (okay, I suppose smiley face for it being cheap, but frowny face because I *like* hardbacks. . .)

Jon -- I didn't love The Blue Sword quite as much. . . but it is still excellent.

Okay, I sorted my 2010 shelf by publication date and I had over 30 books on the list that were published in 2010. Between Audible, FirstReads, and my library's fantastic new books section, I score a lot of the newest stuff. Most of the 2010 publications I've read weren't SF/F. I decided not to include the two Kitty Norville books or the two Dresden Files books that came out this year because I probably would have liked them no matter what. Here are the standouts from the rest:

Maybe, maybe not. I'm compiling everybody's lists here, on Shelfari, and on PaperbackSwap; when the threads have gone quiet for a while I'm going to post the winners. So. . . it depends on how long the conversation keeps going! (Of course, if people do all want to add votes right at the end of the year, the math shouldn't be too hard so I can always go back and edit even my announcement of the winners. . . so the answer's probably yes. I just like to hear myself talk/type.) :D

This is a cool concept. It was hard to choose. I'm sad that Iorich's street date was 29 December of last year. Otherwise it would definitely be in my top 5. On that note, I believe The City & The City was from 2009?

The novellas were originally written as an audio release. I think that due to their success, they are now being released as novellas, (which I've ordered and can't wait to read).

Try the audiobook through iTunes or another provider. Best narrations I think I've ever heard!

Laurel, oh, duh. I totally forgot about the audio release. Those aren't an option for me so I'll try to be patient for the Subpress editions!

I've heard a few people didn't like Black Lung Captain as much as Retribution Falls, but I thought it was just as good. I'm glad I didn't wait for it! :)

Huh, somehow I missed that Mockingjay was there, or had forgotten. I listened to the audio version of The Hunger Games and wasn't impressed enough to continue the series. Did anyone else here have a different experience?

Actually, I got The Hunger Games for Christmas and loved it. Yes, it is meant for young adults, but I still really enjoyed it. I'll definitely read the next two. I didn't listen to the audiobook though, so I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

I probably should have mentioned that I read a ton of YA books. So I enjoy it but have perhaps become picker due to overexposure. I could buy that listening versus reading makes for a different experience.
