I'm venting here...I have no math skills what so ever. AT ALL. I am challenged WITH a calculator. However in order to graduate I have to take a math class. In order to get into the blasted math class I have to take a placement exam. Ok. WTFever. Today I took the test, I was told it would take an hour. The appointment was from 1:30-3:00. It was my understanding that once I took this class it would determine which math class my college would place me in for graduation.
The TEST took me a grand total of 6:38 to finish. That's 6 minutes, and 38 seconds. I did not score well...no big surprise. I'm not so sure I tried my hardest seeing as how I thought I had an hour's worth of questions to go through. Anyway, come to find out that I scored so low that I have to take a lower class first before I can get placed in the college level math class to graduate.
Wait..on top of this, I called the math department to find out what my options were and talked to a very unhelpful man who insulted me by telling me that there was no way I would be able to pass the class needed for graduation based on my test score. I haven't been in a math class or taken a math test in over ten years! I walked in cold. No prep (my fault) But let me also say that my other worst subject - science - I took chemistry (forensic chemistry) last semester and got an A. So do not tell me that it's impossible for me to pass this class! It's insulting and offensive. AND NOT ENCOURAGING!
I'm not in a good place right now...

Oh Bekah, I'm sorry about that. Sending you ehugs. I am a horrible standardized test taker. They don't evaluate intelligence at all. They just evaluate test-taking ability. I prescribe ice cream therapy!
Thanks Danielle, I really appreciate it. I've just had my eye on December graduation and this has put a kink in my plans...ugh
Thanks for your words of understanding and the ehug.
:-)

Damn Beckah.. (((((huugggs)) im so sorry!. I hate when that happens..(school plans being changed.. ) I agree with Danielle here. I am myself a terrible test taker.. !!! that says very little about your abilities to master a career.
are they going to place you in a remedial course? That would be so odd, considering you have taken a chemistry class. And chem requires a good deal of Math.. that boggles my brain.
many ((((((huuggs))))))))) your way sweetie.
thanks guys! I'm still in scramble mode trying to figure out how I can get around this. I'm going to find out if I can take the test again and if so, study up, and cross my fingers. If I can....I'm going to take the class required for graduation at a community college. Just on principal. I dont want to give the college my money for THIS one course! Then I want to call up that nasty man and shove it down his pie hole! Impossible to pass it my ass!
still in progress Heidi! I am set to take the test again...I'm supposed to be studying for it...but haven't had much time to do so.
I hated math so I feel for you. If the kids come home with math homework. Keith helps them! Well he does science too...I do english adn history...those are my strong points!
That guy sounds like a-hole! If he really thought it would be difficult for you to pass the class given your score, there were other ways he could have told you! Something like this "in my experience, students who pass the college level math course get X grade or higher in the placement exam. As your grade was lower than that, you'll benefit from taking a remedial course to make sure you're strong on the basics" or something like that.
