The book must be started after Jan 1st to be counted for this challenge. You posted on Dec 28th that you started this book, so it's not going to count for this challenge. Sorry.

I'm trying to make it easier on Maude this year :)

Jackie, can you explain this rule a little further? I also started a book that I wanted to use for the challenge after reviewing the rules. Rule 3 (which I copied and pasted here from the rules in the first post of the challenge):

3) Books less than 1/2 finished may be counted for the challenge at the beginning, but ALL books must be completed and points recorded by 11:59p EST on February 28, 2011 for points to be counted as completed for the task.

I just want to be clear and not use the book I'm working on if it won't be allowed. Thanks!

Evelina C (evelinaguekguezian) | 42 comments Evelina C's task for Challenge #5: Read any book that is set in a country that is primarily at 60 degrees N. latitude or above. Use this link to help you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60th_par....

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3122 comments My book was less than halfway finished on January 1. I can read books a little faster with Nook.

message 110: by Evelina C (new)

Evelina C (evelinaguekguezian) | 42 comments Sorry folks! I just tried the link I gave you for my task, and it didn't take me exactly where we need to go. You may want to try Wikipedia directly or maybe even look for countries the old-fashioned way using an atlas! In the meantime, just think northern Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia, Russia/Siberia, even parts of Scotland(yeah!).

Good luck and have fun with this task.

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Please change Linda's Task to read - Read any book with a color word in the title - example: One Thousand White Women, The Color Purple, The Red Tent, etc.

Does not have to be HF.

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Was this the link Evelina? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/60th_par...

message 113: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Evelina - would that be any Scandinavian countries - including Denmark? And if set in Canada - does it have to be northern Canada or could it be any part of Canada?

message 114: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Apologies for not reading my own rules :P I meant to change it, but I copied and pasted Becky's previous rules. Okay so Jayme's book will count and if your book adhere's to the rules Jen C then I will count it as well.

It's fantasy.

That's all part of the fun though- matching books to tasks :)

message 116: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Also for task, 5.1 does it count as written by two or more authors if when clicking on that title at Goodreads - two or more authors come up. It is hard to know if it is a true collaboration or if the second name had only a small role.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3122 comments Any suggestions for 20.2 read a book where the character is given a new beginning or a second chance.

message 119: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments I am reading for 20.2 The Summer Garden - the third in the Bronze Horseman series by Paullina Simons. Alexander in the book gets a new life in the US after living in the Soviet Union as a citizen there and almost losing his life numerous times. I loved the first two (especially the first one) and cannot wait for the conclusion. But that one is hard to find as it may be out of print. A friend found it at her library sale and sent it to me.

I had looked at Smilla's Sense of Snow for 5.1 as GR lists the authors as Peter Hoeg and Tiina Nunally, but also considered using that for Evelina's task if Denmark works for the 60 degrees N. latitude.

message 123: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Tiina is the translator. If you look next to her name it says it in gray and on Amazon Peter is the only listed author, so in this case it wouldn't count for 5.1. It looks like it would count for Evelina's task though.

Evelina C (evelinaguekguezian) | 42 comments LemonLinda wrote: "Evelina - would that be any Scandinavian countries - including Denmark? And if set in Canada - does it have to be northern Canada or could it be any part of Canada?"

Denmark is below 60 N.

Canada is a tough one. Since so much of the country is above 60 N, I think any part of Canada would be okay with me. The same goes for Russia(note: not the USSR).

Some other options:

Alaska (all)
Greenland
Iceland
Shetland Island, UK
Norway
Sweden
Finland

If at least half the story takes place in one of these locales, the book should qualify.

Hope this helps.

Tasha Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Any suggestions for 20.2 read a book where the character is given a new beginning or a second chance."

I'm using Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder Poison Study for 20.2.

message 126: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Thanks, Evelina. If any part of Canada works then - have several options. I am also trying to stick to reading mostly books I already own so I am teying to work in as many of those as I can.

Yes, definitely. It sounds interesting!

message 129: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments The Bronze Horseman is a fabulous HF. It was one of my favorite reads of 2010.

message 130: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Another good one that I read in 2010 that would be good for Evelina's task set in Russia is City of Thieves. Yes, it was the USSR but it was in the area around St. Petersburg so that should qualify.

Evelina, I am planning to do a reread of Anne of Green Gables as it is the Jan/Feb selection for one of my local clubs. Since you said any part of Canada would work, I am going to use that one.

message 131: by LenaLena (last edited Jan 04, 2011 05:23PM) (new)

LenaLena (marilenalena) LemonLinda, I was considering reading Anne of Green Gables for your task because of the color in the title!

message 132: by LemonLinda (new)

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Marleen, since I am reading Anne for my local club, I decided to try the prequel written by Budge Wilson, Before Green Gables. So I think I will use that one for my task and Anne for Evelina's task.

Wow! City of Thieves is one of my all-time favorites. St Petersburg is actually very close to 60 N, so I think it would be a fitting choice.

Funny, I was thinking of Anne of Green Gables for color in the title, or a character who gets a second chance. It would work fine for Canada!

Debbie Hoffman | -2 comments i've never done a challenge before . . . 1 question - according to Rule 5, if i use the 20 point tasks i have to do all 4 [20.1, 20.2. and 20.3] for any of the books to count, right?

message 137: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments No, you don't have to do all 4 if you don't want too. Each task (20.1, 20.2, etc) is counted separately.

When it says "when all parts of the task are completed."- that's for tasks that have 2 books like 20.1 Go to the HF Group polls thread and read 2 books from any month or different months. Please tell us what month & year the books were nominated.

Debbie Hoffman | -2 comments i more ? - would The Great Lover by Jill Dawson count as HF romance?

message 140: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Hoffman | -2 comments ok, another questions [i have to admit- this probably will not be the last] does Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay count as HF?

message 141: by Jackie (last edited Jan 07, 2011 05:47AM) (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Debbie wrote: "thanks jackie - 1 more question - how do we know if a good reads author has commented in this group?"

Under the task there is a list of authors that are part of our group. These are the ones that I found had participated in our group.

The Great Lover can qualify as HF romance & Sarah's Key counts as HF.

Don't hestitate to ask questions. That's what this thread is here for :) Glad you're joining us.

Hey Rachel, i have cousins that grew up in Kasson which is near Rochester isn't it?

message 144: by ToniS (new)

ToniS I haven't read it yet, but I know a lot of people read The Historian for a group read. I can't tell from the official descriptions if it's considered historical fiction or not. Does it count?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3122 comments I read it and i think I used it for an HF.
