new_user | 1389 comments I was curious if anyone here watched this show when it was running.

Cassandra | 49 comments I did and I loved it. Every once in a while, Scifi channel runs the series in marathons.

new_user | 1389 comments Glad to see I'm not the only one who loved it. :D I liked the characters, and I thought the concept was pretty interesting. It's too bad it was cancelled so early. I don't think audiences were ready for a paranormal at the time; they're becoming more receptive nowadays. Maybe we'll see another wolfie series.

Penny | 12 comments I just caught the SCIFI marathon this week and it really did look like a good show. I wish we had something good paranormal to watch.
I use to just love Buffy and Angel but to be honest I didn't ever notice this one when it was on the air.

new_user | 1389 comments Yeah, Penny, it looks like there's some potential now with people getting more interested in these shows -maybe that was thanks to Buffy, lol- but a lot of the focus seems to be on vamps. I'd like to see a werewolf show, especially if they used actual wolves instead of sfx, less "monster" like. And maybe other weres too. :D What would you all like to see?

message 6: by Jennifer (last edited Aug 20, 2008 03:22PM) (new)

Jennifer (jenaf) I would totally love to see a new werewolf type show - but a nice/funny wolf...heh heh. no meanies!

Hot, gorgeous, tall, dark and handsome werewolf men - who are also gentlemen - good job, creative and a good sense of humor a must! (sounds like a singles ad!)

lets see - who could play that role?

certainly good sfx - nothing like Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf - LOL

Penny | 12 comments Oh yeah a good werewolf show is a must.
I also love the vamps too so maybe one with both.
The new show on HBO looks like it might be good and I know from reading the books that there are werefolks and vamps.

new_user | 1389 comments Lol, Jennifer, definitely not Teen Wolf. xD I would say tall-dark-handsome-and-buff (but not steroidal), lol. Maybe someone who can pull off that lean, edgy, brooding air. I kind of like Karl Urban for the part, nevermind that that would never happen, lol, I can dream. Or maybe Martin Csokas, Olivier Martinez (hey, he already did it once), James Purefoy, Goran Visnjic (I'll admit it, his voice acting in Ice Age as the tiger gave me the idea, he's got a good growl)... hmm,who else?

Penny, I might give that HBO show a try, but I'm not too sure about Anna Paquin. Looks like she's pretty limited with emotions based on her XMen performance...

message 9: by Penny (new)

Penny | 12 comments I kept thinking where have I seen her?
I hope she does good but I remember now thinking that whenever I watch the XMen movies that she doesn't really have very much emotion.
I have two grandsons and we love all the Xmen shows.

message 10: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments Oh yeah, definitely. I loved the first two XMen movies and the cartoon too, lol. I saw the Phoenix arc in that show, and I was hoping to see it in the film too. So disappointing. :(

Loved it."

I saw 2 episodes before I had to go to work and I liked this show a lot. I never like werewolve shows!

new_user | 1389 comments Yeah, I liked it too. It's a shame they couldn't finish any plotlines before they cancelled the show, but who knows, if True Blood made it, maybe we'll see another werewolf show soon. :) A good one, I mean, not a cheesy horror movie, LOL.

Pamela | 38 comments I thought I saw it coming out on DVD. Has anyone else?

message 14: by Saoirse (new)

Saoirse (saoirse_redgrave) | 6 comments According to Amazon.com Wolf Lake is out on DVD, but, doing a quick search it looks like there are a lot of "burned" copies, too--so be careful if you go shopping for it.

I'd also like to see a smartly written werewolf series (but I'm biased since I'm writing a YA novel related to werewolves currently ;-).

I think vampires are just too commonly used (everyone wants to write a vampire story, it seems), and it makes me wonder if it's a societal statement we're seeing, like:
1.) do we still hope for infectious immortality--do we cling to that idea?
2.)why are we fascinated with things that seem cold to us (physically and/or emotionally--like a vamp's flesh instead of warm fur)?
3.)there are others, but I'm getting tired...

To me, werewolves are excellent vehicles for tales of transformation (in several ways ;-) and my werewolves (like a few previous ones I vaguely recall) value loyalty and struggle against strict hierarchies. I think there's amazing potential for more wolfie tails--oops!--tales. ;-)Isn't romance about transformation, struggle and (hopefully) loyalty?

The first I recall reading was Mary Stewart's "A Walk through Wolf Woods" (or something like that). Not a romance, but intriguing for me as a then 4th grader.

new_user | 1389 comments Shannon, I vote you write us a werewolf series, LOL. You definitely raise some interesting points, about what the fascination with vampires and werewolves indicates about our society. For me, a large part of the attraction of werewolves is their passion versus, for example, a vampire's coldness, as you mentioned. They're also in touch with the most basic.

What's interesting is this concept is ideally placed with young characters, since we tend to associate these themes with coveted youth (hormones, passion, etc.) One of the more interesting characters on Wolf Lake for me was the son of the alpha pair (power's another interesting theme common in wolf stories), Luke Cates, played by Paul Wesley. He has since moved onto other roles, but I still think he would make a great wolf. ;)

Jennifer (eidolon) | 3 comments I actually bought the entire show - all episodes - on VHS off an auction on yahoo back in 2003. I spent a weekend in the dark with a friend watching them all. After the last episode my friend was like, "So when do the rest of the episodes come in?" I had to tell him that the show got cancelled. It broke our hearts. I LOVED that show. I think if it were released again today in this time frame that it would be more accepted. I thought the story lines were so intriguing and wonderfully portrayed. Now where are those VHS tapes again?

message 17: by Saoirse (new)

Saoirse (saoirse_redgrave) | 6 comments New_User, if only you were a production company looking for a pitch! LOL. I agree with the additional popular theme of power plays and hierarchies (very much the struggle inherent in a "pack" system--and fun when in combination with that traditional American theme of the underdog coming out on top ;-).

And youth (at least in my current w.i.p.) is an important aspect of the story, too, with my characters being mixed into a high school setting (and having their own issues with aging).

I agree that passion and the primal push of hormones shows up (and should show up) in werewolf tales. It's in our youth we try to find where we fit in (back to pack hierarchy struggles). In my w.i.p. I also include the viciousness of high school peer groups--talk about struggles for dominance ;-).

If you look at the cycle of television shows, books and generally "what's hot" I think we're about due for a good werewolf tale. Although my w.i.p. is currently in a competition online (and folks have told me it reads somewhat like a screenplay) I doubt I'll get the call (or have the contacts) to sell a related script. But ah--the dream... ;-)

Now I'm wondering if one of my friends has a copy of Wolf Lake I can borrow...I'd love to see it again. :-)

Kelly Walker (wykedgoddess05) | 10 comments Just read an article about FOX being in talks of a show that is 4 friends ( sort of like sex in the city) . but they are all young urban werewolves ... My FINGERS and TOES are crossed this comes into play !!...

message 19: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (bluemanticore) | 216 comments Kelly, that sounds really interesting. It would great if they could pull off something like that. Maybe a Buffy the Vampire Slayer level form of Teen Wolf?

message 20: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments Wow, Kelly, that's great to hear. From there, it's only a hop and a skip to an edgier adaptation of the werewolf legend, which makes me happy, LOL. Thanks for the heads up. I found an article about it at The Hollywood Reporter if anyone else is curious.
