My point of view was I just did not find this book to be that outstanding is all. I felt like I have read this kind of story many time before. The Name in the Wind is frankly to me just not a special book, even though I rated four stars.

I actually agree with you. I didn't find 'Name of the Wind' to be all that great - I think I rated it 2 1/2 stars in the end.

I don't agree with the comparisons to Harry Potter, tho..."

Right on! There should be more of us!

jD (jd_4everbooked) | 34 comments I am currently reading Bone Gods which is Urban/SFi/Fantasy. I want to comment on the NoTW discussion. I gave NoTW five stars when I read it and I still feel it is justified because it is well written. On the negative, I wanted to give it one star when I got about 25 pages from the end and realized the whole book was one day of a three day tale. I felt violated and still do. There should have been a warning. I read the thing when it was first relased so I have been waiting, what 3 years. I was prepared for Iron Elves and the Warded Man series cliffhanger but they were not as big an investment of time to read. At the end of the day so many things play into each person's rating including the level of disappointment in the ending.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I guess then The Name of the Wind would not be considered as a stand alone novel.

Dawn (breakofdawn) Who said it was? Lay off of the NoTW talk already.

Back to the topic of the thread... I started Mistress of Rome yesterday, and really like it so far. Not quite fantasy, more so historical fiction.. But there's a fine line, in my opinion, between the two genres. They have very similar feels.

Actually Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy reminds me a lot of notw - they both focus on a character who has gone through many difficulties in their lives, narration starting from their childhoods in first person, and I ended up feeling very attached to them.

Right now I'm reading Beyond the Shadows by Brent Weeks, and I'm really enjoying this trilogy. It's so impossible to put down (except for the first half of the 2nd book which was pretty slow). I'm also reading WoT Knife of Dreams on audiobook. I went through a slow spell where I just could not finish Winter's Heart. I skipped most of Crossroads too.

Come on Sarah!
Happy New 2011 Year! :p

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I'm pretty sure it's because we're still posting in the Dec. 2010 thread instead of the new Jan. 2011 thread.

It's under the 'Group Information' folder instead of 'What are you reading in...', though, so it's not really your fault for missing it.

Don't. It was a cleverly designed trap.
Ehm. What am I talking about?

Anyway, you can always start the topic yourself. You don't have to a moderator. I think I have started a few What are you reading in xx 20xx.
This time I was lazy.

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Well, I fixed it so all 'what are you reading in' are in the folder by that name.
