Karen (karenelizabeth) | 3 comments My pile of "to-be-read" books isn't nearly as bad as it could be...we have an excellent library system around here so I use that a lot rather than buy. Now, if I had to include all of the books that I reserved, checked out, and then had to take back because I didn't get to read them before they were due back...talk about shocking numbers. I literally do that ALL of the time. Poor librarians...

I only have about 10 or so at home that I need to get to...

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments Yeah, but Iki, someone else gets to hunt for and cherish those books later just like you did. It gets a 2nd or 3rd or 4th chance!

message 253: by Emily (new)

Emily After my 5 book splurge on Saturday I am up to 22, but I started out 2008 with 38... so I am slowly but surely working my way down. :)

message 254: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Thanks for the words of hope for all my books, Abigail. Now I don't feel so bad about being a book hoarder. :-)

message 255: by Cecily (last edited Sep 22, 2008 09:09PM) (new)

Cecily (thorn) | 13 comments Well, I probably own 148 books; that's what it says on my I-own-this shelf and I try to keep it up to date. That doesn't include duplicates.

The only ones I don't remember buying were bought a really long time ago (when I was, say, 10-14).

Duplicates:

Three copies of Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell; it's my favorite book ever so I couldn't resist. One with the black cover, signed. One with the white cover. One I got from a library sale for fifty cents to be my "junk" copy that I read all the time.

Two copies of The Ladies of Grace Adieu (short stories by same author). One the slip-case edition and signed; the other cheap library copy.

Two copies of The Secret History. A paperback I bought first, and a hardcover I found later for fifty cents.

Two copies of Assassin's Apprentice. One signed, the other a fifty-cent copy I got to read and be rough with.

Two copies of Little, Big. One signed, one to be rough with.

Two copies of the His Dark Materials trilogy (the one-book edition). One signed, one to be rough with.

I have close to the 50 mark (which is huge for me). I took them all out of their bags b/c my hubby was getting a little annoyed knowing they were unread, and I keep buying more.

I am planning on hitting two more library sales in the next two months, so i dont want him to have a heartattack, you know? haa haa

Angela (blonde_chick120) | 51 comments Oh gosh! Too many! Let's see...At least 21. Probably more.

So many books! So little time!

message 258: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments This question is one that I hoped I would never be asked. It's somewhat embarrassing to think of all the books in my house waiting to be read. However, the answers I've read here have made me feel much better about all the unread books I have. I still don't have a number that I can put on it (actually I still don't want to go there in my mind), but let's just say there are 100 and be done with it. I, like most of you, can truly not go into a bookstore without buying at least one book, usually more. And, Amazon calls to make sure I'm still alive if I haven't placed an order that week. Ha, ha.

Damn, add two more books to my unread list. I just bought "American Psycho" by Ellis, and recvd a copy of "Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked, and Spewed" by Lance Carbuncle in the mail!!

message 262: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Probably about a fourth of them! I like to have lots of choices sitting there waiting for me when I'm ready to start a new book.

And that's not counting the partially read ones...

message 263: by Connor (new)

Connor (topobear) I have around 20 books which are just sitting there waiting to be read. I tend to buy and not read them right away. I think I have only ever purchased one duplicates before.

message 264: by K.S.R. (new)

K.S.R. (kareyshane) | 17 comments Many of the books in my home are unread and I have a good, bona fide explanation :) I moved from Vermont eight years ago under duress and had to leave my beloved, carefully collected books behind, including much, much more.

The books I have now--many of them anyway--belonged to my great Aunt Liberty Lula Brown. I inherited them when she passed at lovely age of 101 years.

I remarried five years ago, and that brought more books onto my shelves, but many of them are on falconry, a subject I'm not passionate about. Cough, cough. I do love the creatures, though.

Sigh. I'm going to stop writing about this, because I still miss my books and I just need to press forward. I had some I can't find anymore, even on Amazon.

message 265: by [deleted user] (new)

I keep buying so my list keeps going up! I really need to stop being on GR long enough to read a little more.

Like that would ever happen.

message 268: by Ari (last edited Sep 29, 2008 09:15PM) (new)

Ari (aricl) I just added Pamuk's The Black Book and Murakami's Norwegian Wood to my ever-growing, never-ending "to read" pile.

Methinks I will get a tongue-lashing from my SO when I get back home (I'm out of town for a couple of days and I ran out of books to read... what's a person to do in such a case, but rush to the nearest bookstore, I ask you??)

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I have been "banned" from buying more books for a while by my husband who saw a bank statement and was horrified how much I had spent on books since I joined GR (way to piss on my bonfire - I was feeling really smug!)

Apparantly I have a "problem". Erm, yes, it's called bookaholism!

message 270: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
ha haa... just have to get smart about it now Boof... I shop alot of salvos and book sales. When you get 30 books for 20 bucks, your less lible to get your hand smacked :)

message 271: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh Sarah & Boof. I am so sorry. You can move in with me! Ha ha!

Side note about good sneaking, buy the book sneak it in the house when hubby's not around. Put it in the tub or on the shelf for a minimum of a week or two. By the time the hubby notices you can say Oh I've had it for a while! Works everytime trust me did it for years. Plus your not lying by the time he finds it and thinks its new it's been around a while. Sometimes it took my X months to find it. Works with everything, scrapbooking, quilting, shoes, purses books. You just have to be sneaky!

It's hard. I want more books but I need to read a bunch before I buy anymore.

message 272: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments I'm so glad I'm among friends (that would be you, reading this) who actually "get it." I just added another three to my already astronomical list.

message 273: by Lori (new)

Lori I have shelves of books I haven't read yet and I still keep buying more. I think I have an addiction.

message 274: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (notestothemoon) I've got loooooads!! I'm not even going to count because it's depressing :( I'm terrible for going on a book buying marathon reading a few of them and then going on another book buying marathon. I just can't help myself!!

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) If there was a book-buying marathon in the olympics, I would win gold medal I think. Mind you, there would be quite a few contenders from here (LOL).

message 276: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Emilee-

Funny! I figured everyone around here would understand the sneaking in books so the DH/DW doesn't know exactly how many days a week you bring home "new" books. But, I'm sooo glad to hear someone else does it with scrapbook supplies. I always hide them in my car until my DH isn't home then bring them in the house. I don't think he has a concept of how much I spend on scrapbook supplies.

Jenny-I do the same thing! I pick up books 5-10 at a time. As soon as I've read 2 or 3, I get to go buy a whole new dozen. It's almost sickening. Ah, well! I'll just tell my DH I borrowed them from my Dad or my sister. He'll believe that!

message 277: by Julianne (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Also, my sis just joined bookmooch, but we're posting both our books. This is gonna increase the # of unreads significantly

Kataklicik | 87 comments Wow, Sam, 4?

How on earth do you keep the number low?

(This, from a person obviously with a bookbuying addiction hahahahahaha!)

But honestly, it's soooooo hard to resist dem books... I pass a bookstore and think, wait, I'll just pop in for a looksee, and end up with a few to go. Sigh...

message 280: by [deleted user] (new)

Julianne: I have a hatch back & when I got it I noticed it was harder to hide it in the car so I actually would take it to work then bring it home because I got off before my X did. Worst is I do CM on the side-yeah to support my habit. Between the book buying & scrapping I'm just in trouble.

On a side note because of my great purchase today my unread list is growing! Oh my just need to find more time to read.

7 from the library that are unread

message 284: by Beth F (last edited Jan 29, 2009 06:39AM) (new)

Beth F | 342 comments My number: 184. I had several duplicates and didn't even realize it until signing up for GR last year, listing them all on a shelf called "at home waiting tbr." I got rid of the duplicates and keep hoping this site will inspire me to read books I already own as opposed to only bringing new ones in the house. So far no luck.

message 285: by Daybook (new)

Daybook | 66 comments I have only 2 unread (unreadable) books in my house. I only buy books when I need one to read and then never more than three at once. If a book is really terrible I usually give it away but I messed up these two so there they sit.

message 286: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez I can't count that high....

message 287: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 338 comments I don't know why everyone seems to be embarassed. Like someone said, at least it's not crack. I have over 300 unread books in my house and I am waiting impatiently until payday when I can add to that number!

Book Addict: The Habit That Makes You Smarter

Wa-hoo!

message 288: by Teresa (new)

Teresa I rarely have unread books. I only buy two books at a time and don't buy anymore until I have read those or determined that they are unreadable and give them away. I could not take the pressure of a large stack of unread books waiting for me. I would find it overwhelming and would never read any of them and find a way to give them all away.

message 289: by Megan (last edited Jan 30, 2009 10:59AM) (new)

Megan | 86 comments I'm a freak, I'm diseased, there's no stopping it! It's like a twitch, see a book, buy a book...I'm hopeless. My decaying corpse won't be found for weeks because it will be burried in stacks, piles, oceans of books, and the stench of death masked by that lovely book-musk. And we haven't gotten to the worst part, yet. I have only read a little under 50% of my library. Yes, 50%! And for being fairly young still, I've read quite a lot. I simply cannot read fast enough to keep up with the wicked compulsion that continually fills my shelves and drains my accounts!

message 290: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 218 comments I ahve a couple thousand. But at least I always have something to read no matter what my mood. LOL

message 291: by Andra (new)

Andra (aezadnik) I probably have about 20 books on my shelves that are unread. I am not counting my boyfriend's books that I never have any interest in reading though. Problem is, the books I do have that I haven't read will NEVER be read. I've attempted most of them in the past few years, and never fell into any of them.

That's it, I'm taking them to my local used book store and selling them. Then I can buy more used books with credit. Delightful.

I love that! I want a bumper sticker that says that!

message 293: by Debbie (new)

Debbie I'm not exactly sure but probably about 40-50. Not to mention all the books I keep picking up at the library (which is probably why I haven't made much of a dent in the books I own!)

message 294: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I'm thinking around 80-100...is that stopping me from aquiring more? No!

I have a problem.

message 295: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments My current number is 68, but I don't feel so bad after reading some of your posts! Love my books and glad to hear from others who love theirs too. Just can't resist getting more!

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I moved recently and was very embarrassed to find that I own 5,000 lbs. of stuff. Literally. We hired a company to pack a truck and move our things for us this time so it got weighed we actually DO own TONS of stuff. As I started unpacking my books I made a box for "unreadables and never going to read again" books that we can get rid of. I counted what remains (mostly out of morbid curiosity) and of the 129 books on the shelf only 25 of them are unread. times that by 3 and you get about how many books I have in my house and how many are still unread.

So about 75 books out of 400 unread. I think that's than my last guess. I've been making some progress. I have been trying to read one book off my shelf for every library book I take out. Seems like a fair trade and has been working out pretty well. At least there isn't a bookstore in town...so I can't buy more. Except online, which I am really good about.

message 297: by Mosca (last edited Jan 30, 2009 04:10PM) (new)

Mosca | 828 comments Looks like I've got about 300 books, more or less, in the house.

Somewhere between 50 - 75 unread.

I buy books; and I read books. But these two don't relate in any way I can easily explain.

message 298: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 253 comments Love your comment Mosca!
I buy with the intention of reading it next, but by the time I'm ready 10 more have made it on top of the 'gotta be read' pile!

message 299: by [deleted user] (new)

Mine keep growing because I get so many suggestions but can't read fast enough!

message 300: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I don't know how I first responded to this thread but I currently have 46 unread books at my house. That's the most I've ever had in my life and I have a feeling the longer I stay on GR the worst it is going to get!
