My understanding is that it's not e-ink on the Nook Color but LCD. They told me the screen is something I can't remember to cut down the glare and the display is customizable so you can turn it to be really dark if you want.

I thought you told me to boycott barnes & noble. Did I confuse you with someone else? I got aNook for my bday. Its heavier than I thought it would be.

Jammies I just had to share this quote from my friend Kate:

"When the world goes to pot and the zombies come in, the zombie-killing manual should not be on an ebook, you know?"

And on-topic, my dad is very happy with his Kobo.

Isn't Kobo coffee?

message 55: by Cosmic Sher (new)

Cosmic Sher (sherart) | 2234 comments I just got a Galaxy Tab and have downloaded the Borders e-reader app & Kindle's app. So far, because I've only perused the free books, Kindle's selection is better. Their free stuff is all classics, but Borders is pulp romance crap. Once I actually purchase a book, then we'll compare. :)

Jammies Amelia wrote: "Isn't Kobo coffee?"

According to Wikipedia, Kobo may refer to:

the subunit of the Nigerian currency naira
Kobo Abe, a Japanese writer
Kobo, Ethiopia
Kobo (woreda), the district in which Kobo, Ethiopia is located
Kōbō Kenichi, a Japanese sumo wrestler
Kobo whale, a blue whale skeleton
Kobo, the Li'l Rascal (Kobo-chan)
Kobo eReader, an e-book reader

janine | 7709 comments as long as you leave the mushy brains underneath for jammies to devour i'm fine with that.

message 59: by Jammies (new)

Jammies I do not want mushy brains, I want the well-exercised, muscular brains, tyvm.

message 60: by Arminius (new)

Arminius I have the B&W Nook. I like it a lot. It looks like real book pages, buying a book is easy and fast, and you can highlight sections and bookmark pages.

However, I have about 40 books on it. I find it a little difficult when I want to switch between books. I have to scroll through pictures of little bookcovers to find a book that I was not last reading.

B & N also has lots of old cheap e-books. Also if you find a book that is out of print you can click a button that will let the publisher know that you want that book electronically. Although, I am not sure yet if that will work.

I just got a Literati for $63. Let me know your thoughts on it Misha.

message 63: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments I'm glad you're enjoying it Misha!

Confession - until I got to the last line..."working journalists" I thought I was reading Heidi's updates on seeking and purchasing an ereader.

smetchie | 4034 comments I like my nookcolor but its really heavy. Also I jones for real books. There's just no substitute.

Michael smetchie wrote: "I like my nookcolor but its really heavy. Also I jones for real books. There's just no substitute."

I thought it felt heavy when I tested it in the store. How do you like the virtual keyboard? Is it really functional?

message 66: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I got mine connected to our home wireless, and got the updates Misha. They seemed to help a lot. I would rank it between 3.5 and 4. It's viewing screen is narrow, but the price was hard to beat to get into e-readers.

message 67: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Misha, you need to enter the encryption key in where it asks for the password.

message 68: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Michael I LOVE the virtual keyboard. It's bigger than the one on a phone so it's really easy to use. That was the main reason I chose Nook over Kindle. I don't like the keyboard taking up all that room when most of the time you don't even need it.

Mine was an encryption key that the router assigned. I'm not sure that I've ever used the password I selected when I set it up.

message 70: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments If you can print out the settings from your router, it should list an encryption key. Mine is quite a long run of letters and numbers, probably close to 20 digits.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I like simplicity: I can't decide between the Nook or Kindle. My library will let me download onto Nook but not Kindle. Why not both?

message 72: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments That's too bad Misha, because mine seems to work quite well.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 708 comments Michele wrote: "I like simplicity: I can't decide between the Nook or Kindle. My library will let me download onto Nook but not Kindle. Why not both?"

It may be the type of file your ebooks are. Nook wil hold pdf, epub, pdb and Kindle will support azw, txt, mobi, and prc. Some files you can change over using a program called calabre.

message 75: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Aw, Misha, I'm sorry. What a disappointment.

I'm sorry to hear that, Misha.

message 77: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments That does suck Misha.

message 78: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments That is the route I would try at first Misha, as the price is unbeatable.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I got a Nook color on my doorstep this morning. After playing around with it for a little while, I'm really liking it, but can't say that it's going to get any more use than my original Nook, especially since I couldn't order the magazines or manga volumes that I wanted to try.

I'll probably use it for light web surfing and reading in bed, and use the regular Nook for day reading.

message 80: by Michael (new)

Michael The color Nook is the one I'm looking at so I'll be interested in reading about your experiences with it. I probably would have one now if it allowed you to edit Word documents. In my neverending attempt to avoid making a decision I might go look at an iPad this weekend.

Sarah | 13814 comments Stacia wrote: "I got a Nook color on my doorstep this morning."

Did you know it was going to show up, or did it just appear?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I knew. I had been hinting at one, and my husband told me it was coming the night before, just so I wouldn't be upset if the day passed and my present didn't show up on time.

janine | 7709 comments yay!

message 84: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I actually took my Literati back and got the Color Nook also. It is just so much easier to use, and (not sure what this means, but my son says it is a good thing) being on the Android platform will allow a lot of new upgrades which include honeycomb or something like that.

message 85: by janine (new)

It's encouraging to read two positive reports on the color Nook because I'm about... this close to getting one. Misha and Jim, have any of you noticed any issues with battery life?

message 93: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Michael - I would guess from what I've used it so far that it will be around the 8hr life that I was informed it would be.

I also have a bunch of music downloaded to it so that I can listen to music while I read, or play games on it. There aren't many games for it right now, but there are supposed to be more coming out.

message 94: by Michael (new)

Michael I heard they're going to open a Nook app store in the Barnes and Noble stores at the end of this month. I'm hoping one of the apps is something that allows the editing of Word documents.

message 95: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman I have a Nook color and absolutely love it. Easy to use, screen is very readable and the battery life is pretty good.

Lyzzibug ~Still Breathing~ (lyzzibug) | 708 comments Maybe for the backlit ones...I hope. I sit for more than two hours whenever I have the chance on my B&W Nook

message 97: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments BunWat wrote: "I read an article this week saying that people are advised to spend no more than two hours a day looking at e readers. Two hours?? That's clearly not going to work for me! It put me right off."

Huh. I would assume that's for the backlit ones too, but wow.

message 98: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments I wasn't really in the market for one, but my wife kept bringing it up, and as I looked into they seem pretty functional and fun. I will still read paper and ink books as well.

message 99: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman I thought I would have little use for one since I am big on reading actual books but now that I have it, I use it all the time. It is much more convenient to download books than have to get to the bookstore and also cheaper, plus it saves room on my limited bookshelves. I highly recommend the Nook color.
