4112243 Have you read more than 6 of these books? The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here.

Instructions: Copy this into a new message. Put a star (*)next to the titles you have read. Put your total read number at the top.

39/100. Which doesn't make me clever, just eclectic. Besides, I'm notorious in my family for my inability to copy and paste and have just lost half an hour deleting EVERYBODY else's messages...

John Talk about impressive!

I re-read The Woman in White as an audiobook recently -- it lends itself quite well to that format, if you're looking to fill in the missing 21 items.

29 Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll (had it read to me as a child-does that count?)
30 The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame (ditto this book)
37 The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini
38 Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - Louis De Bernieres
39 Memoirs of a Geisha - Arthur Golden

49 Lord of the Flies - William Golding

89 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
90 The Faraway Tree Collection - Enid Blyton
94 Watership Down - Richard Adams
96 A Town Like Alice - Nevil Shute
98 Hamlet - William Shakespeare

OK, many of these relate to "a good education" and thankfully a mother who encouraged reading. I'm interested to note which ones I haven't read (and would have to acknowledge that some family members would be horrified to think I hadn't, like that makes me less of a person - book snobbery) .

The other thing which is interesting is to see if we have books in common - that we have ALL READ or ALL NOT READ? I'm putting Pride and Prejudice right up there on top of the "have read" list together with To kill a Mockingbird, 1984, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Grapes of Wrath, Lord of the flies all due to school reading lists. And the "Not Read"s? Dont know.

That's an interesting question Maggie! I'd like to know if there is one book that is the most read.

5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
7 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
18 Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger
19 The Time Traveler’s Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
21 Gone With The Wind - Margaret Mitchell

50 Atonement - Ian McEwan
51 Life of Pi - Yann Martel
58 Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
64 The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold
90 The Faraway Tree Collection - Enid Blyton

I probably have about 80% of this list on my bookshelf at home waiting for me to read them. But some of them just seem to hard. But hey I am only 24 so should have quite a few more years to make my way through a list like this.

This might sound a tad weird or maybe I am a complete nerd but I think I have a lot of these books at home because they are the kind of books that you feel like you have to read. I dont necessarily think they are on a subject point that is interesting.

I agree with the idea that these are books which you are expected to read, and also that they are not the easiest. Many of these books are 'typical' classics (hence why so many of us have read them at school). I wonder how the older ones stand up against the more recent classic books. And are we only reading these because the expectation is that we should? Sure, some of them are great, but some have aged.

Murray Gunn (murraygunn) | 211 comments 20/100

I once read a great quote that said "a classic is a book everyone wants to have read but no one wants to read".

There are some books on here that I'm actively avoiding and some I've read that I'd warn others away from. Notes From a Small Island is one of Bryson's worst examples of travel writing.

1 Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
4 Harry Potter series - JK Rowling
5 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
8 Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell
16 The Hobbit - JRR Tolkien
25 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams

68 Bridget Jones’s Diary - Helen Fielding
70 Moby Dick - Herman Melville
74 Notes From A Small Island - Bill Bryson
87 Charlotte’s Web - E.B. White
89 Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
94 Watership Down - Richard Adams
97 The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas

message 44: by [deleted user] (new)

Maggie - I totally agree with the fact that they are not the easiest books to read and not always enjoyable. A couple of them I really didn't like reading but I struggled through them because I felt like I had to (and they are the older classics Brave New World, Catcher in the Rye). Sad I know!

I also find them quite intimidating - as I said I have a lot of books from the list sitting on my bookshelf but everytime I think what do I read next I see the 'list books' sitting there but don't pick them very often because it tends to be a hard read.

The feeling of accomplishment you get after reading one of the books is always good though :)

I have it on my TBR but not gotten around to it yet.

message 47: by Joanne (last edited Nov 30, 2010 05:12PM) (new)

Joanne (goodreadscomjovo) | 262 comments I think the only reason I've read so many of the books on the list is a) I started a long time ago, b)I also had to do a lot of them in school, and c)I also felt some of them were books I 'should' read rather than just read for pleasure.

One book I dutifully bought as an 18yo was Sartre's 'The Age of Reason'. I still haven't got past page 30... And 'Rabbit, Run' by John Updike is still sitting on the boat somewhere... it's so dreary!

The classics should be read, or at least tried. The most difficult thing about them is dated language, but the themes are ageless. Case in point is one of my favourites - Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe. It's a bit heavy as far as speed reading goes, but it's an amazingly modern story in a lot of ways. It's considered to be the 2nd 'modern' novel ever written. Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is the first.

I think it's good to read widely, not just in one or two fields. I tend to draw the line at Mills & Boon romances though!

message 48: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (goodreadscomjovo) | 262 comments But what I didn't add was that I enjoyed almost all of the books on the list. Except for Crime and Punishment, Lolita, Vanity Fair, Bridget Jones' Diary, I really struggled to finish Possession, and I HATED the Da Vinci Code.

Hey Maggie,
I totally agree that some of these books are hard to read, or only read because we have to , but some of the ones on the list reind me of great childhood reads, like Little Women and Narnia. Books like those I still take out and read over and over :)
