I can't remember, school was about a century ago! I just remember that I read it. Can't I count? And what sound does a koala make?;D
Buggered if I know. I was struggling with how to spell the Skippy sound.

Actually wasn't that easy...I'm not sure if I've read more or my mind is playing tricks. I have seen quite a few of these in movies. And then I've read quite a few of them but only partly which I didn't count.

I re-read The Woman in White as an audiobook recently -- it lends itself quite well to that format, if you're looking to fill in the missing 21 items.

The question is why didn't Joanne read the other 21? Slacker.

You can leave it at 99, number six shouldn't be on there.
Joanne I am suitably impressed with your efforts by the way.
... and of course you have read no other books. :)

certainly would be a slog to get through.

OK, many of these relate to "a good education" and thankfully a mother who encouraged reading. I'm interested to note which ones I haven't read (and would have to acknowledge that some family members would be horrified to think I hadn't, like that makes me less of a person - book snobbery) .
The other thing which is interesting is to see if we have books in common - that we have ALL READ or ALL NOT READ? I'm putting Pride and Prejudice right up there on top of the "have read" list together with To kill a Mockingbird, 1984, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Animal Farm, Brave New World, Grapes of Wrath, Lord of the flies all due to school reading lists. And the "Not Read"s? Dont know.

That's an interesting question Maggie! I'd like to know if there is one book that is the most read.
20/100 - I have deleted all the ones I havent read.
I am blown away by Joanne's efforts!

I probably have about 80% of this list on my bookshelf at home waiting for me to read them. But some of them just seem to hard. But hey I am only 24 so should have quite a few more years to make my way through a list like this.
This might sound a tad weird or maybe I am a complete nerd but I think I have a lot of these books at home because they are the kind of books that you feel like you have to read. I dont necessarily think they are on a subject point that is interesting.

I agree with the idea that these are books which you are expected to read, and also that they are not the easiest. Many of these books are 'typical' classics (hence why so many of us have read them at school). I wonder how the older ones stand up against the more recent classic books. And are we only reading these because the expectation is that we should? Sure, some of them are great, but some have aged.

I once read a great quote that said "a classic is a book everyone wants to have read but no one wants to read".
There are some books on here that I'm actively avoiding and some I've read that I'd warn others away from. Notes From a Small Island is one of Bryson's worst examples of travel writing.

Maggie - I totally agree with the fact that they are not the easiest books to read and not always enjoyable. A couple of them I really didn't like reading but I struggled through them because I felt like I had to (and they are the older classics Brave New World, Catcher in the Rye). Sad I know!
I also find them quite intimidating - as I said I have a lot of books from the list sitting on my bookshelf but everytime I think what do I read next I see the 'list books' sitting there but don't pick them very often because it tends to be a hard read.
The feeling of accomplishment you get after reading one of the books is always good though :)

Love that quote Murray! Do you know who wrote it? I'd like to put it in the goodreads quotes.:)
Murray what did you think of 97 The Three Musketeers - Alexandre Dumas ?
I have it on my TBR but not gotten around to it yet.
I have it on my TBR but not gotten around to it yet.

One book I dutifully bought as an 18yo was Sartre's 'The Age of Reason'. I still haven't got past page 30... And 'Rabbit, Run' by John Updike is still sitting on the boat somewhere... it's so dreary!
The classics should be read, or at least tried. The most difficult thing about them is dated language, but the themes are ageless. Case in point is one of my favourites - Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe. It's a bit heavy as far as speed reading goes, but it's an amazingly modern story in a lot of ways. It's considered to be the 2nd 'modern' novel ever written. Defoe's Robinson Crusoe is the first.
I think it's good to read widely, not just in one or two fields. I tend to draw the line at Mills & Boon romances though!

Hey Maggie,
I totally agree that some of these books are hard to read, or only read because we have to , but some of the ones on the list reind me of great childhood reads, like Little Women and Narnia. Books like those I still take out and read over and over :)
