Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments I just had this really weird thing happen on fb. An old friend of mine posted about her and her family not travelling while the TSA is "groping people." I totally agree with that. Then she ended her post with "The country is going to shit, wonder why" She was referring to her hatred of Obama. She and her husband, also an old friend, are always posting their political opinions on things. Frankly I'm getting sick of the right's blame Obama for everything game but that's another discussion.

So I commented: "I have no choice, I already bought my tickets for December months ago. By the way, Bush turned the country to shit long before Obama took office. He's just done nothing to fix it."

Her response: "please dont start with the blame bush shit on my page"

Me: Wow! That's harsh. Am I not entitled to have a different opinion? (What I really wanted to post was "Truth hurts, doesn't it?" But I did want to be so "harsh."

Her: you can have any opinion you want, but my facebook is for MY OPINION, I don't open it up for debates...

So, I went onto my own wall and posted: "Attention everyone: If I post something here that you don't agree with, feel free to comment and tell me what your opinion is. I believe that discussion is key to human growth." Because I knew I wasn't going to have the last word on her page.

Now, I would think if you put yourself out there like that I would think you'd be open to differing opinions. Is it just me?

By the way, if anyone here wants to friend me on FB my email address is jaimie476@yahoo.com

Her response: "please dont start with the blame bush shit on my page"

That made me spit my tea.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I have to admit most political/issue-based facebook posts bug me. I'm talking about the "if you believe that (insert issue here) is important, leave this as your status update for 24 hours!" type of post. I may sound cynical, but I don't believe a thirty word facebook status update is going to make even the fucking tiniest difference in informing people, changing opinions, etc. I guess there are some subtle/funny political updates, and I don't mind articles, but the hyper-serious cut-and-paste political shit, no thanks.

message 4: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart When the whole healthcare reform (I don't want to say "started happening" but when there were some changes made) thing was going down, I wanted to just delete my facebook because every status was like, "Fuck you, Obama. I'm not gonna pay for some welfare mama to take her child to the doctor while he's wearing brand new Jordans." 'cause EVERY PERSON ON WELFARE FUCKING ABUSES THE SYSTEM APPARENTLY. That pisses me off so much. I hate talking about welfare in classes 'cause they always fucking stereotype, and it's like, dude, have you ever been on food stamps? Do you know anyone that welfare is benefiting? Well, I do, and no, they do not get new clothes every week. No, they do not raid the mall. No, they are not on drugs and/or addicted to alcohol. No, they are not gangbangers. No, they are not unwed single mothers who have five babies by five different men. so just shut the fuck up, you asshole.

Félix (habitseven) Cool, Barb.

Sally had a good one recently:

PLEASE READ!!!!!!
If someone comes to your front door and asks you to remove your clothes and dance with your arms in the air, DO NOT do this. It is a scam!
They just want to see you naked. Please copy and paste this to your status.

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments Well, I was expecting her to defriend me. I've seen her do it before. I'll give her that much credit.

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments Negotiating the political is a constant struggle for me on facebook. I haven't made any strictly political posts for quite awhile, but I do often post for causes and ideas that are important to me, and I don't really get arguments - maybe because somebody would have to say "You know, I AM a homophobic racist" and people just don't want to say that out loud, even if their politics ultimately reflect that.
But to stick to your basic question, I think when you post something, that's officially opening it up for discussion.

message 8: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Nor do I (need that shit).

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been shocked by some of the political commentary made by some friends on Facebook, especially from the Glenn Beck-worshipping brigade. And to think that some of these friends of mine used to be quite liberal or at least open-minded.

Status updates I don't mind - admit it, the ones you're asked to keep for 24 hours to support or bring awareness to something completely inane like remembering all the members of the Empire killed in the first Death Star is pretty damned funny - but it's some of these groups or pages that make my blood boil, like the "Mandatory Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients" or "Kill Obama" pages that make me angry at the rampant ignorance and hate that exists on FB.

Rachel (aka. Kaiserin Sisi) (looney-lovegood) | 8 comments I don't like getting political of facebook. It seems that whenever someone says some political idea, someone is going to get offended, and I am a very non-confrontational person, especially with people I know in real life.

When others post things that are political or trying to make a statement of some sort, I generally ignore it, except when it is overly offensive.

I don't like getting political on facebook or anywhere else. My politics are my business, yours are yours.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I figure FB is for sharing updates about what's going on in MY life, not what's going on politically. I'd rather talk politics in person, and have an in depth conversation about the issues.

But then, I don't have bumper stickers on my car, either.

message 17: by Michael (new)

Michael I don't mind political discussions on FB but they're kind of difficult to have when the only way to reply to someone up the thread is with that goofy @ symbol so they just end up being a lot of mini-rants. What I hate is when someone starts a political thread and after receiving responses he doesn't like, simply deletes the thread.

message 18: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments My cousin makes political comments on FB. Sometimes directly, sometimes obliquely. She is NOT on the Obama bandwagon, and thinks the country would be better off with no immigrants from Mexico, drug testing for welfare recipients and no gays in the military.

I do a lot of ignoring.

janine | 7709 comments king missile - detachable penis

i woke up this morning with a bad hangover
and my penis was missing again
this happens all the time
it's detachable
this comes in handy a lot of the time
i can leave it home
when i think it is going to get me in trouble
or i can rent it out
when i don't need it
but now and then i go to a party
get drunk
and the next morning
i can't for the life of me
remember what i did with it
first i looked around my apartment
and i couldn't find it
so i called up the place where the party was
they hadn't seen it either
i asked them to check the medicin cabinet
because for some reason i leave it there sometimes
but not this time
so i told them if it pops up to let me know
i called a few people who were at the party
but they were no help either
i was starting to get desperate
i really don't like being
without my penis for too long
it makes me feel like less of a man
and i really hate having to sit down
every time i take a leek
after a few hours of searching the house
and calling everyone i could think of
i was starting to get very depressed
so i went to the kiev
and ate breakfast
then as i walked down second avenue
towards st. mark's place
where all those people sell used books
and other junk on the street
i saw my penis lying on a blanket
next to a broken toaster oven
some guy was selling it
i had to buy it off him
he wanted twenty two bucks
but i talked him down to seventeen
i took it home
washed it off
and put it back on
i was happy again
complete
people sometimes tell me
i should get it permanently atached
but i don't know
even though sometimes it is a pain in the ass
i like having a detachable penis

That was my intent, yes. Thank you all for carrying on in my absence.

message 28: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Creech | 100 comments I'm often surprised at how different people's opinions can be from mine when I have known the person for 30 years and grew up in the same neighborhood, same basic socio-economic class, same school, etc., but I probably shouldn't be.
I do believe that if someone posts something on their FB status, they are inviting folks to comment.
I mostly ignore the political stuff, although the hate mongerers and close-minded folks normally end up being hidden or de-friended. Same for the overly preachy religious folks.

Congratulations! But, you know, if it doesn't last it might not be so bad!

message 31: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I mistakenly got into a science v. religion discussion yesterday with a guy I lived next door to growing up. It was fine -- we accept that we don't agree -- but then a mutual acquaintance jumped in and got all huffy about how there's no way there's no God (I never said there wasn't) and that anyone who believes that must be an idiot.

I hope I learned my lesson -- but probably not.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments my dad moved into my house when he turned 80. Now, he was somewhere to the right of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Me? Somewhere to the left of John F.Kennedy, Robert Kennedy. So, from the first I told him we would have to agree to disagree! Enjoying keeping up with my son on Facebook. Enjoyed getting in touch with 2 very good friends from my past.
