YA Short story about reading 100 books

I vaguely remember this story. It was in my English textbook in high school and was about this boy who for some reason had this list of 100 books that he was told would make him really smart, or something like that, if he read them all. So he set the goal of reading them all, which he did, but it didn't really make him smarter because he didn't seem to realize that he had to UNDERSTAND what he was reading as well as just read the words for him to get smarter. What I really remember about this story was there was an illustration of a bookcase with all these books where the bindings of the books when looked at all together made a mosaic of a boy's profile looking down at a book. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.
