Catholic Readers discussion
So...what are you reading?
Re-reading If Protestantism is True by Devin Rose and reading the 19 Advent homilies of St. Bernard including the discourses of "Missus Est".
Read and completed three superb books. Loved everyone of them.1. L'annonce faite à Marie - A fantastic play that searches and answers the question: Who is a True Christian? The answer comes out in a well constructed play in a moving manner. Here is the review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
2. The Story of the Other Wiseman. This is a popular story. I had heard it said many times. But it was the first time I read the original copy. Loved it. A great book for Christmas and especially for the kids.
3. Prayers from the Ark. These are also very apt for kids. There are some 27 prayers written in the form of poems. All prayers but one are made by the animals in the ark and the remaining one is by Noah. The poems/prayers are simple and lovely. Another great book for kids. I have added the prayer of the cat in my review. If interested check it out: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Presently reading an excellent play - The Mystery of the Finding of the Cross: A Play in Three Acts. Loving it so far. The last act is yet to be read.
I’m reading “His humble servant”, Pascalina’s Lehnert’s memoirs in pope Pius XVII, very interesting boom!
I am about to start Steve Ray’s “Crossing the Tiber.” I’ve wanted to read this for years so I’m excited to start!!
Just finished "Trrusting God" by Jerry Bridges. I'ts wonderful and it's about the sovereignty of God. Deals with suffering a lot and it's ome of the more theologicaly Catholic leaning books written by a protestant. About six months ago I read his most classic book "The Pursuit of Holiness"
I just finished reading the new Apostolic Exhortation, Rejoice and Be Glad: Gaudete et Exsultate and I tried to write a review on that, I hope you may like it, thank you. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Last week I read a book Silence wonderfully written I encourage you all to read this book. It will really help you to strengthen your faith. My review of this book, https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... And I just finished (again) Freed and Healed Through Fasting https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2... (A little book with a BIG message! 😍)

"The Smoke of Satan" was tough on the abuse in the first chapters but was very enlightening on the church in other chapters. Edward Sri is always a favorite with "Into His Likeness". A surprising "A Pope and A President" has much about the Miracle at Fatima and I just started reading it. PJPII and RR.
Tom
I just finished "The Smoke of Satan" and well worth the read but the opening few chapters are enlightening but tough to read about abuse scandal. Other chapters are more about the church today and well thought out recommendations. "Love Unveiled" by Edward Sri was very good. A favorite was Scott Hahn about his conversion- a riveting tale. Called "Rome Sweet Home."

How was The Dolorous Passion???
Julie wrote: "Just finished “Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist” an excellent read by Brant Pitre" I will mark it as a want to read! Thanks for the tip!
I am now re-reading To Love An Invisible God and trying to see if there is anything I wrote that needs possible correction or improvement. It is a very personal book for me about my spiritual journey.
To Love An Invisible God
Just finished "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist" Here's my review. Excellent read! http://christinecalabrese.com/jesus-a... I'm now rereading "The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christi"

Tom, Sorry for the delay!
The DOLORIOUS PASSION is a MUST read, Bl. Anne Emmerich give details about Our Lord's passion and the Blessed Mother's sorrow in detail. Get it and read it. This time I've been impressed by the Holy Spirit that Our Lord, prayed, He prayed and prayed and He gave Himself up for us.

I have a good many books that I am currently reading. Some of them are for my independent studies (American History, Theology, and Philosophy). There is one book I am reading that is not part of that independent studies and is so far a great book I would recommend for Catholics, but for those who want a better understanding of The Rosary.
This books written by Fr. Donald H. Calloway as I mentioned above has been good so far. It was recommended to me by a Lay-sister in my Dominican Laity Chapter.
Now reading all four volumes of Blessed Anne Emmerich's "The Life of Jesus and Biblical Revelations..." Quite a page turner! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8...

During confession, I was advised to read this book; I am so thankful that he suggested it! Wonderful, powerful book.
I tried to read A Commentary on the Book of Psalms, but I had to set it aside. I was having trouble understanding it, so this must not be the right time for it. Instead, I've picked up Mother Angelica's Little Book of Life Lessons and Everyday Spirituality

Marketing God by Donna A. Heckler. It's non fiction and how-to but that is what I need right now. I also want to read The Sting of Death by Shimao Toshio (translated) after reading an article about Catholic writers. So that is bookmarked once I get through the marketing book. I read a lot of shorter articles too. I'm not around Goodreads as much as I'd like to be, but I do pop in often enough to try to see what everyone is doing here.
I usually have two or three books going at the same time. My main read at this time is, ‘The Day is Now Far Spent’, by Robert Cardinal Sarah. It is a hopeful book, though at first I thought it might be a downer. But Cardinal Sarah expresses such love for the Church I was uplifted instead of oppressed. I’m just on page 50 and looking forward to reading on.I’m also reading, ‘A History of The Catholic Church’ by James Hitchcock and ‘Heroism and Genius’ by Fr William J. Slattery.
Right now reading Peter Kreefts "I Burned for Your Peace" What he calls Augustine's Confessions Unpacked. Kind of an abstract short critical review of the great work. It's wonderful! Having read Confessions, this is a great academic look at the work but simple and readable, more like a devotional/critique hybrid.
The Real Story with my Catholic Women's Group,The way of perfection
The catechism by Spirago.
And a bunch of others here and there.
Martin Luther and the Protestant Movement: Joy of the Christian Journey Edited by Shawn Potter and Lois Potter.. In this book we learn why and how Martin Luther, the real Martin Luther came to oppose the Church. This is very interesting because it seems that most of the reformation is based then on some kind of fable of the man and not the real man himself. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
Jamie wrote: "Thomas Merton in Alaska, The Diary of Saint Faustina, and Saints are not Sad."I love St. Faustina's Diary!
I am reading a new devotional for Lent, and I highly recommend it: 40 Days at the Foot of the Cross: A Gaze of Love from the Heart of Our Blessed Mother . I am so glad that I have found this book.
"Transfigured: Patricia Sandoval's Escape from Drugs, Homelessness, and the Back Doors of Planned Parenthood" by Christine Watkins, Patricia Sandoval(see Patricia Sandoval talk about her experiences: https://youtu.be/_qJR-IAtAe8
Just finished Love Awakened by Love: The Liberating Ascent of Saint John of the Cross, an excellent and practical introduction to St. John of the Cross—although I still think the very best introduction is Ascent to Love. After reading one of these introductory books, of course, you should go to reading John himself.
Reading now Introduction to the Devout Life by Francis de Sales-a wonderful guide for those aiming for a devout and holy life. Unusual for it’s time, it was written specifically for lay people, the language used is for lay people and every chapter shows Sr Francis de Sale’s gift as a spiritual adviser.
