15.8. A Festivus for the Rest of Us!
December 23 is Festivus, and one of the “Festivus traditions” is the Airing of Grievances. Read a book with a word in the title which relates to one of your “pet peeves.”

The word in the title must relate to the grievance. Any noun, verb, adjective or adverb that is included in your statement of your pet peeve will work. Define your gripe, then find one of these types of words in a book title.

Articles, conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns still will not work - no "the" "and" "with" "who" etc.

For instance, if your pet peeve is “people who talk on cell phones while they’re driving,” the key words would be "people," "talk," “cell," "phone," and "driving” – so you could use The Elephant, the Tiger, and the Cell Phone: Reflections on India - the Emerging 21st- Cenury Power, Cell, The Glass Cell, A Phone Call to the Future: New and Selected Poems, Hack: How I Stopped Worrying About What to Do with My Life and Started Driving a Yellow Cab. Words such as “who, on, while, they’re” don't work.

REQUIRED: tell us what your "pet peeve" is.

Lahni wrote: "If my pet peeve is when my 9 year old daughter whines could I use the words nine, daughter, or whine?"

nine is too general - I'm guessing you probably didn't like it when she was 8 and won't find it more pleasant when she's 10! (I sure didn't!)

but daughter and whine will work.

message 10: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 312 comments Thanks. I was afraid you'd find 'daughter' too general and I'd be stuck finding a book with the word 'whine'!

Christine US (christineus) | 575 comments I cannot stand stupid drivers, especially when they make my commute (already long at an hour) hard to handle.
Since they are also highly likely to be commuting into work, I had planned to use Commuters. Since I'm not 100% sure that they are also commuting (even though I can't imagine what else they would be doing driving into Houston at 7am), is that still OK.

Mine is along the same line. I commuted an hour (should have been 45 minutes). I hate it when the line of cars for the exit is a mile long and some people feel their time is so much more valuable then the rest of ours and they cut in on the line of cars. I get so ticked off! What words, exactly, from that long rant, are acceptable?

Maybe "crisis" or something along that line??

message 23: by Coralie (new)

Coralie I have decided that my pet peeve (I have so many peeves) is machines that talk to me as though I am an idiot, particularly when they keep telling me to do something that I have already done. So I think I will read The Machine's Child if I can find a copy.

Manday, I think for the first one you need to read an adult version of "Chicken Little, or The Sky IS Falling".

Liz I really dislike when people don't keep something secret/private when I've asked them to. Actually, when I hear anyone telling other people's secrets or gossiping, it really bothers me.
Would "secret/s" work for this?

You know, I think you might be better off to look at books you want to read - maybe from your TBR - and see if there are words in the titles that you could work into this complaint - the same thing bugs me, but I'm not sure how I'd put it in words that work with a title.

Yay. The complaint is pretty long to explain exactly what it is that bothers me (or you or anyone else that feels the same way). I will definitely go through my books and see what might fit.

"men" is a little too general, since it doesn't sound as if men as a group are your pet peeve, but only a specific action.

message 49: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 817 comments I hate it when people invade my personal space! I was standing in line at a bank recently and the person behind me was right up against the back of me! Could I use "personal" or "invade" or "space" for this task?

message 50: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) Well, fortunately I'm an irritable person with lots of pet peeves, so I have options. I really hate when I'm cooking (usually something elaborate that requires multitasking and concentration) and people come in the kitchen and distract me. I've made it known that the kitchen is off-limits when I'm cooking, but it never seems to get through! So maybe I can read Kitchen Confidential, it's been on my list forever.

I also hate when people leave the lights on when they leave the room, it's such a waste of energy. I think I have several books on my TBR with the word "light" in the title. A possibility?

If neither of these work, let me know, I'm sure I can think of a dozen other pet peeves, heh.
