Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Kids consider someone old if that person asks them how school is going.

So don't do that and you'll be fine.

Good point. Ross Douthat doesn't seem elderly to me so much as he seems like someone who thinks that saying grim things makes him appear mature. He'll probably have a serious midlife crisis. And what's with that beard of his?

Personally, my definition of old has always been Ed Koch. He was elected mayor of New York in 1977, when I was 8, and he seemed old to me then. He's still kicking around, being himself, and looks pretty much the same. Once Ed goes, my definition of old will be me.

I saw a pic of Koch the other day and he looks really, really old. It's like he looked 55 for awhile, then 70 for awhile, now I guess he'll look 120 for awhile.

Brooke Astor was my old yardstick at one point.

I saw Koch on the corner of 79th and Broadway a few months ago. He was a little more stooped over than I remembered, but otherwise he looked basically the same--and he sounds exactly the same: "How'm I doin'?"

Brooke Astor alas is long gone.

So anyway, Jim and Kev. The ficus for you.

I just like to secure it's pot inside the location. The delicate ficus roots are enmeshed in lovely hummus and mushroom compost.

message 68: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments I've always thought of old as somewhere between 80 and 90. My grandmother died at 67, and I was upset that she died so young.
I gotta say though, I'm only 30, but if it's all downhill from here...I'll take an early exit from this earth as well.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I don't like that age to die, Alecia. I hope my mom lives longer than one more year. :(

message 70: by Phoenix (new)

Phoenix (phoenixapb) | 1619 comments I hope your mom lives for a very long time, Sally. My grandma was sick for many years before she died...so her death wasn't unexpected...but it was still a very painful loss. She was the glue that held our crazy family together...I still miss her so very much.

Michele, I totally agree with what you said about being in your 30's.
I do believe that feeling old has a lot to do with giving in and giving up. What I mean by that is, not trying something because you feel like your too old. People always think I am younger than my years because I stay active and healthy and open to new adventures. One thing that does make me feel old and sad today is someone I have worked with for a long time is very ill. When people in my peer group or slightly older start battling serious illness and begin dying then I have to face my own mortality. I will still fight it, but it does make me realize the clock is ticking.

::Scurries off to enjoy the new found freedom too much::

message 76: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 136 comments I agree that old has to do with behavior. When you no longer try new things, go on trips, or really want to do anything in general. I understand that sometimes health gets in the way and can prevent people from getting around like they used to. But I think it's still important to get out and do things to the best of your ability.

message 77: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Agreed Kristina, activity will help to keep you feeling younger.

message 82: by Jan (new)

Jan | 241 comments As the most senior poster here, I can answer that question. It happens very, very gradually. It comes as a shock to you when you realize if there ever is a newspaper story about you (for whatever reason), you would be referred to as an elderly person.
Many say that it is a frame of mind. I say that it is when your body completes the process of life and wears out.
I would specifically define "old" as reaching the point where you are just waiting to die.

message 83: by Lori (new)

Lori How old are you Jan?

And I can't go back through this whole thread, but what was the LG hint, I MUST know.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments actually, I am hoping to "...go gently into that good night..." I am beginning to think of death as a friend and the ultimate adventure. I am not afraid of death, I am afraid of the dying process...pain,misery.But I have almost died 5 times now..I spent 2 &1/2 years wanting and sometimes trying to die...no, I do not fear death just the dying process.
