jenjn79 | 564 comments Yeah, profile is loading, but not the shelves.

I went through the most recent books and merged and deleted.

Isn't this a fun project?!?

EDIT: shelves are loading now! joy.

EDIT AGAIN: shelves load if you pick a shelf other than ALL it looks like.

Or "read".

message 303: by jenjn79 (last edited Jan 14, 2009 08:33PM) (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Rivka - I notice she shelved some intended as audiobooks. Are you worrying about merging into another audiobook edition? Or ignoring that?

p.s. I'm working on the 2008 nonfiction shelf.

When I noticed, I merged to an audiobook. I probably missed some though.

...I'll let someone else decide if it should be merged with any specific edition before being deleted (which it needs a super-librarian for) ;)

Gone.

message 311: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Well, looks like we've gotten to all the books that person manually added. At least from what I can tell.

and *shrug* for the most part, I didn't worry about whether they'd been shelved as audiobook. There were just too many to check each darn time.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments You guys deserve a medal! Or a free book? :-)

Yeah.

I am concerned that her read shelf (and a couple others) are still non-functional. But I imagine MICHAEL is working on 'em, or will be shortly.

message 314: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Hmm, yeah, just checked and some of the shelves still have errors.

BTW - did she respond to your message about the issue? I just want to make sure she isn't going to keep adding more that will need fixing.

message 315: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
No. I actually hope we haven't scared her off. :(

message 316: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments No - she still has some - I think maybe the reason we can't see her read shelf is because so many corrections have been made that it can't display - or something like that anyway. But you can still find her books by doing a general search for Audio Books and going to the last page. Actually you will then need to edit the URL to get to page 116 (just change 117 to 116 and hit the Enter button). Then you will see some of her listings.

message 317: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments If you do Reviews view, then All shelf, you'll not get the error. I'll start poking through to see what we missed last night.

MICHAEL confirmed that he is working on straightening things out.

message 319: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Rivka- shelves seem to be working fine now! I went through and I think I got the rest of the stragglers. But someone might want to go through and double check.

And on the bright side, I see the person added a book today - the right way!

message 320: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments You're right, Isis_FG - her bookshelf looks perfectly orderly now.

message 321: by jenjn79 (new)

And thanks to MICHAEL! And everyone else who worked on this one.

message 323: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments These kinds of "incidents" make me think GR really needs a "Getting Started" page for new users...like "How to add a book to My Bookshelves."

message 324: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
The thing is, there IS one. In fact, I sent her a link to it. However, most users bypass it.

JG (Introverted Reader) | 487 comments Thanks, rivka, I just forwarded that link on to my aunt who loves the site but who's having some trouble figuring everything out. I'd never see that before.

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I thought it was presented as an option to newbies, but it's been a while since I joined -- I could be misremembering.

It's the "help" link at the bottom of each page.

message 332: by jenjn79 (last edited Jan 16, 2009 06:45PM) (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Oh no...she's back at it!!!

50 some odd MORE books manually added.

http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/...

This royally sucks! Would I be out of bounds if I emailed support and suggested the person's account be frozen until they understand the system? Because this is getting ridiculous

message 333: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments Isis, I just sent her this message:

Kathleen - You are such a passionate reader! Goodreads is such a great place to keep track of all the books we've read - isn't it? Just remember to do a search for the book you want to add before you add it manually. I'm afraid you're keeping us librarians awfully busy combining the entries you are adding with actual editions of all the many books on your shelves. All you have to do is search for the title or author and you'll 99% of the time see that the book you want to add is probably already in the Goodreads database. There's an information piece about adding books here or you can feel free to message me with any questions you might have.

PS. I'll have to look through your books to see which ones I need to add to my "to read" group!

Let's see if that helps - if not .... then let's regroup.

message 334: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Melody - you're much more polite than I could have been, LOL. When I saw all those books added, I just wanted to bash my head into a wall. Nicely worded message, though. Hopefully it will do the trick, but if not...well, we'll see.

And thanks for working on those new ones. I just didn't have the patience for it tonight and decided to do some actual reading ;)

message 335: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments She's misspelling a lot of names which means she might not be finding certain books in the database. I've been working on several here and there but I don't have time to do the whole list.

message 336: by jenjn79 (last edited Jan 16, 2009 08:55PM) (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Yeah, when I worked on the ones the other night, I found some incorrect authors and whatnot, but that was maybe only 15 of the probably over 100 I worked on. She either doesn't understand how adding books to GR works, or this is the way she's decided to do it for whatever reason. Who knows. I just hope this most recent message works because she's already manually added almost 400 books; I don't want it to keep going.

message 337: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments Yeah, Melody, It's a lovely message. I just hope she understands it and starts adding books the way we do here at Goodreads. It's a lot of work to do the corrections. At least they're all in one place and not random. They're easy to find, and it will be easy for us to check future book additions.

message 338: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments I haven't heard anything from her - so it may not be worth a damn.

message 339: by jenjn79 (new)

jenjn79 | 564 comments Since she hasn't figured out how to add books correctly, maybe she hasn't figured out the GR Inbox.

I'll keep an eye on her profile page for new additions...

Beautifully put. Is there someplace that things like this can be stored to be used as a template should the same situation come up again? (Yikes!) Or do we just have to rely on the memories of others who have not developed the sieve syndrome in their brain that I have?

But doesn't an email get delivered to a regular mailbox when someone messages you? All she has to do is follow that link, right?

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments But doesn't an email get delivered to a regular mailbox when someone messages you? All she has to do is follow that link, right?

I can't remember but I do think that is the default, yes.

message 344: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
It is the default. But people can easily ignore emails too, right?

It was a lovely message, Melody. I hope it does the trick!

message 345: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 2400 comments But people can easily ignore emails too, right?

Yes, I have a friend on Goodreads who gave her junk mail email address to them and never reads her GR emails. I've learned if I want to recommend a book or otherwise communicate with her about Goodreads stuff, I need to email her directly, not via Goodreads. I'm sure she's not the only GR member who doesn't read GR emails.

message 346: by rivka, Former Moderator (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
I work at a small college, and regularly send out emails to students and faculty members -- frequently with critically important information. It's amazing how many people ignore them. :P

So people ignoring GR emails surprises me not one whit.

Brooke | 46 comments http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/50...

This sticks out since the author name is reversed (Last First) - no ISBN info and nothing listed as far as it being on shelves, but I don't know if that precludes someone having it unrated but added to their read shelf.

I'm a librarian but have never deleted a book before, so I wanted to check in first before doing so.

message 350: by Melody (new)

Melody (runningtune) | 13300 comments I updated the data for French Tana to be Tana French and combined it with other editions of The Likeness and then deleted it.
