Please delete this book! (pt. 5)

These three books are the same. The first one is the correct one:
1. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14...
2. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15...
3. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13...
They are already combined. Please super-users delete the other two.
Thanks!

Also this (no ISBN and other details):

and this (wrong ISBN):

each of these two books was already combined with the correct edition.

I've already combined it, but there's no information other than the name of the book, so I think it can go.

And these (no ISBN and wrong ISBN):

It appears that some bad data got into a database somewhere (Abe or Amazon?) and spread to other databases. No such entry that I can find in isbndb or Library of Congress, but that may reflect more on my skills than on the book itself.
On a related note, somehow all the editions of Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe get filed under the less-than-canonical title of Dr. Faustus, perhaps because the master edition is the Dover Thrift Edition for whatever reason. Is it possible to canonicalize it, or should we just put up with it as a minor issue?

I fixed the author and combined it with the proper book, so the person who's marked it "To Read" still has it on his shelf. I just can't remember if it needs to be combined or separate to delete--if I delete the book when it's combined, does it delete the whole listing? And if I delete it when it's separated, does the guy's To-Read designation move to the proper book?
I don't delete things often/ever, so I don't remember how it works. :(

I got this one. You'd gotten it ready to be deleted.
Before deleting an edition you need to combine it with other editions of the book; sometimes you need to combine it with the exact edition which means separating those out from other editions and then combining the correct editions, and then combining the remaining edition with all the others.
Never delete an edition that is not combined with other editions of the same book or it will disappear and be deleted from the shelves of all members who have that edition shelved.
If it's combined with another (preferably identical) edition, all reviews will go to the remaining editions.
Does that make sense?
Thanks for all the work.

Keith, Amazon has it labeled as an import, so it not showing up in the LoC is not terribly surprising (especially since it appears to have been a small printing 40 years ago!). The ISBN appears genuine, so I'm not sure what the issue is, or why you assume it is incorrect?
As for Faustus, the edition of a book with the most reviews/ratings/etc. gives it its name. Since the most popular edition is (as per its cover) "Dr. Faustus", I guess that's just how it's listed. (Sometimes the most popular edition has a non-English title, which makes things even more fun . . .)

Makes sense--thanks! That's what I figured (that it had to be combined, then deleted) but I couldn't remember. Better to ask again than to irreparably remove a book that I've read and reviewed!
I try to stay away from these hard deletion jobs, and stick to the Sisyphean RH Value Publishing when I have time. :)

That's a huge help, as is working on the other "authors" on the list. There's so much to do. All librarian tasks can be enjoyable, and I like having different types of tasks to choose from at different times, depending on my mood.

My guess is that the Marlowe you linked to is a version of:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jew-Malta-New...
I think it wouldn't show up in LoC because it's a British imprint.

And this one. I know I could delete this one myself, but Im not sure what to do especially since there is a decent review of it... Do I email the guy and tell him we are deleting it?

This the one that had the wrong spelling
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/69...
This is the one I want to merge the other with

Wrongo: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49...
The title is misspelled, other than 2008 no other info is given. Should be: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/80...

I did this one. There are many like your "wrongo" one. It had just the last name of the author and it was misspelled.
So, what you do when you see books with no information and partial authors' names:
1. In order to combine books, the author's name must be spelled the exact same way. So, the first step is to change the author spelling to the correct one/same one as the other edition(s) of the book.
2. The next step is to combine the editions. From the book's page or the author's profile page, you click on the combine editions link. You then put checkmarks in the boxes of all editions of the book you wish to combine.
3. You then view all editions of that book and delete the one(s) with no information, including the "wrongo" one. (Sometimes you will need to separate editions in order to combine the edition to be deleted with its proper edition, then you'll need to recombine editions. More on that another time given that it doesn't apply to your example.)
Now, we're careful not to delete editions that should remain in the database. Having that 2008 date and misspelled last name only of the author as the only information other than the title is a good example of an edition that can be deleted as long as more fully described editions are in the database. But often, due to an old publication date or another reason, there is sometimes no ISBN and other "missing" information that's generally there, yet the edition should remain in the database.
I hope that helps a little. Check the librarians manual and feel free to ask any questions.
You're going to come across a lot of these and will have plenty of opportunities to work on the database. Thanks for noticing this one!

Since it is a published partial draft at the authors website, there is only one "edition" of it but in the database, there are two duplicates, though they are exactly the same. Both have been combined though.
Done.
Golly, look at all those ratings! For a partial draft of an unpublished book!
And I thought Star Trek fans were nuts. ;)

Here's another one that can go. No ISBN, no cover.
And another one. This one doesn't have an ISBN. But this one does.
This one doesn't have an ISBN either, but it's combined with this one which does. I tried deleting this because it only shows 2 reviews, but it says only a super-user can do that.
Got 'em all.
JG, for the purposes of deletion, rating (or even shelving without rating) counts as a "review".

No info at all and there are several other editions of it...

There are no information regarding this edition...
I've corrected the author name so I could combine it but only a super librarian can delete it.
Thanks :-)

The title is misspelled and there is no ISBN and almost no other info.
It is the same as this book:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/97...
I followed your instructions above, Lisa, for combining edition, but when I got to step 3, I did not see any way to delete. Is this a job for a SuperLibrarian? I've never run into something like this before.

I deleted it for you.
In the future, once you've combined all editions of a book and there's an edition (or more) that has no info and can be deleted. Make sure it's already combined with other edition(s) then simply go to the edition you want to delete, to the book's page. There's an "edit" link at the top right in the box. Click on that, scroll to the bottom of that page, and there's a "delete this book" link. When you click on that, it will be deleted and will be combined/merged with the edition it's been paired with. If it hasn't been combined with a specific edition, it will be combined/be merged with the most popular edition. Just make sure to combine any edition with others before deleting it; otherwise it will completely disappear from members' shelves.
Thanks so much for your help!

This is a duplicate of a more complete entry of:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/43...

I got that book.
And I'd say there are at least 3 separate author with that name. Michael has an ongoing list of authors who have the same name but are different people. Michael & Rivka keep lists of authors who need work.
You might try posting in this thread:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/6...
and perhaps a librarian with some time can sort out these authors.

it's got an already used ISBN-13 listed as the ISBN-10. It'll merge with the correct edition automatically.
