2011 SFR Reading Challenge

.I really enjoyed this one too.
I've lost count! LOL. I think I agreed to 15 and I have to be close to halfway. Yes, I'll keep reading SFRs even if I take a break now and then to read some other SF.
I'm finding that SFR's are providing me with a much needed break from paranormal and historical romance. Unfortunately, I'm out of town, so I'm not near my books :(
Finished reading The Lancaster Rule. I'm now reading Space Fever.
Wow, could two books be more different?
HI, T.K.I thought your worldbuilding and description were really good. You described body language so well I could see it. It was very realistic to how a normal person would probably feel waking up 300 years from now. I liked the tech too.
Thanks Anna! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it. Yeh, I tried really hard to make Josie real, and those around her. Took me some time, but then I thought how I'd feel if I were put in her position.
Just finished Space Fever and started Old Man's War .Space Fever... well, it was okay. If it had been much longer and I hadn't been doing this challenge I don't know that I'd have finished it. It wasn't a "deep" story at all and there wasn't much development of anything--world, characters, emotions.
Now I'm reading Old Man's War and like it enough after 20 pages to want to read the whole series. I think John Perry, the hero, is really funny. There's more worldbuilding in the first twenty pages than in all of the previous story.
But I'm sure if someone wants a light and fast read with some graphic sex (not a LOT) between strangers then they may like Space Fever.
I don't know how long the series is or even if it follows the same hero, but I found the recommendation for this on one of the SFR sites so there must be some romance in it. Not by page 20, though. LOL.

, though I don't know if this one counts as sfr since from what I gather the h/h don't see each other at all in this "chapter". Don't care. I'm compelled to keep going. I'll let you all know if it turned out romantic.

Anna, I'm SO happy to see this series mentioned here. Just gotta chime in.I love John Scalzi's trilogy. It has a very unusual, understated romance that carries through all three books. Book 1 is the male MCs story, book 2 is the female MCs story (if she survives). Although there isn't a lot of romance in Book 2, it's very exciting, tense, tragic, and doesn't always paint the human race as the 'good guys.'
Book 3 was the hardest for me to get into after the events in Ghost Brigades. It starts verrrrry slow, but about halfway in---total hook!
If you read the whole series, there's a surprise at the end of The Last Colony. *cough*thatmademecry*cough*
Have you come across Lt. Stross (?) yet. I LOVE that character.

Hadn't heard of Sagan Diaries, so had to go research it. As suggested, it's a diary (in novelette form) as told by Jane. Very mixed reviews though and some say it's a totally different voice for Scalzi. I may pass.I think this would make it five book series. I haven't got around to Zoe's Tale yet, though.

Ah, this is good news. I read the first book and loved it. I didn't even know it was a trilogy. Lawdy, my book pile groaneth, but I have to read these.
I just finished reading Heather Massey's Once Upon a Time in Space. Tons of SFR goodness - fast paced adventure and lots of raunch. Also, Jaqueline Lichtenberg's Dushau. Old skool SFR and a great read!Off to sign up for the reading challenge.
Hi Diane. I started Once Upon a Time in Space and can't wait to finish it. The first couple of chapters were awesome, but then I got sidetracked with work. Darn it. I'm really eager to get back to it.
Re: John Scalzi's series. Not really a "romance" in the traditional sense, but a subtle, understated relationship runs through the three novels and ends with a surprise. There was so much to discover and think about in this series, I didn't really miss the traditional romance at all.

Dushau, for me, wasn't very romantic at all. Maybe I'll read Jaq's Harp next too. I do have it on my reader.

Once Upon a Time in Space was so much fun. In Enemy Hands - the ending came too soon for me. I hope there's a sequel coming. Feral was good, but a bit too shapeshiftery for my taste. Silver Bound was good, but there was a particular element I had a hard time getting past. Gosh, I enjoyed them all, really.

Heh. I was very comfortable not understanding the science in Spiral Path. I really enjoyed the Calendra and Raphael characters.
Dusahu - first part of a trilogy, so no big fat HEA at the end of the first part. Don't know if there'll be one at the end of the trilogy either.
I didn't read the rest of the Dushau series yet. I don't know if I even have them yet.For Spiral Path I didn't want long, drawn out explanations for everything--just a few more than there were. It wasn't just the SF, either. The "myths" about Calendra weren't told either, only hinted at. I would have liked to read one, however short.

I am not sure if I subscribed correctly but I would like to give the moon level a try. I just recently finished reading Starkissed by Lanette Curington. I thought it was a very good book and assume that it would count for this challenge. I might start reading Hope's Folly by linnea Sinclair but not sure yet.
Hi Amy~ Anything by Linnea Sinclair is wonderful, imo. Did you know Hope's Folly comes in the middle of a series? I love the book, and think it can stand alone, but you would be missing some background info. If you haven't read any of Sinclair's books, you may want to start with one of her stand-alones, like Finders Keepers, Games of Command, or An Accidental Goddess.I'm pretty sure I only signed up for a "earth" challenge because I read a lot of other genres, not just sci-fi rom. I'm going to end up reading a lot more than 5 sci-fi rom books this year, though. ;-) I'm getting too many great suggestions hanging around this group.

I think whether Accidental Goddess is light on SF is open to interpretation. I viewed her "psychic" and "fantasy-like" powers as part of her unique genetic makeup. And parts could be explained by science. That one's one of my favorites of hers.I think my absolute favorites from Linnea are Hope's Folly and Accidental Goddess. Games is actually my least favorite. I do recommend reading the entire Dock 5 series in order though to get the most out of it. I'm sad that I've read all her books! There are no more yet!
Games is your least favorite? I know it has its faults, even plenty of them, but the awesomeness of the characters and the pressed down love, and the finding of your own humanity through love and emotions (view spoiler) totally overcomes those...Well at least in this fangirls eyes. =)

. Pretty much all about the sex. You could look at it as humor though if you took the silly sci fi element as tongue in cheek. That's #17 for me.

I thought I posted a few days ago that I finished Rebels and Lovers.
Today I started reading Tsunami Blue
The beginning is really good. Strong sense of character. The feeling of a huge world. Good worldbuilding.
And I don't just like it because there's a dog. :-)
I chose this one over Lancaster Rule because in my ereader it was 233 pgs vs 690. I want to be able to read Children of Scarabeaus as soon as I can get it without having to stop halfway through a long novel. A short one? I'll finish first.
