If you're going to read it regardless, you might as well count me in. I was kind of hoping the next classic chunkster was going to be a Dumas anyway.

The film coming out soon was all the extra push that I needed. :)
Loretta, set up a thread. Then whoever wants to join you will see the new thread and come join you...it looks like you have one already!
Oh darn, I just read the first few posts and thought 'Yay! I can join in with Crime and Punishment starting January!' - then realised it was last year :-(Would anybody like to join in on a read of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay ?
OK, one more person and I will post a schedule to start in December. Do you think it is good to have a week off for the holidays, or is that maybe a time when people can actually read more?

Okay, that is seriously on my top 10 favorites of all time. I LOVE that book with a passion. As a matter of fact, I loved it so much that I'm afraid to re-read it, for fear that I will not love it as much the second time (thereby shattering the illusion). LOL.
That is so great to know Loretta! I have had it on my shelf for about 6 months and the only thing putting me off is the size of it :-) Maybe I will just go ahead and post a schedule and then I will have to stick to it :-)

We generally keep it to about 50 pages per week, to make the sections managable. PM me when you have it posted and I'll tak a look.
Rosemary, since we are still in the process of getting a group together I'm going to post your schedule here so it can be discussed and close the other thread...I'll open a thread closer to the time we are going to read the book. Great work on the schedule!

and I'm assuming we will read a little faster at the end! I know I always do!
Rosemary wrote: "Would anybody like to join in on a read of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay?YES! I've gotta track down a copy, but I'll definitely join in on this one. It's been on my radar for a while. Thanks for putting this together!
Oh! I want to read Kavalier and Clay so much! I have Mists to finish off, but I may well join in on this one afterwards.
Excellent! The schedule starts right after Mists of Avalon finishes, so I hope that will suit everybody.
I'm actually really interested in this novel because if I'm not mistaken, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of Michael Chabon's influences; I had to do a huge author project on Garcia Marquez last year, so it'll be interesting to see if I can spot Garcia Marquez's influence in Chabon's writing.
Did anyone want to post about The Second Sex? I know I've seen discussion about it on another thread...if not, just ignore me...
Yes, I'd like to read The Second Sex. I don't have a copy though, so someone who does would have to break down the schedule.
Old enough at least, though, that I'm sure most libraries will have plenty of copies and no waiting lists.
I've broken The Second Sex down into a 13 week schedule, but if we're going ahead with a side reading of Kavalier and Clay, perhaps it might be a good idea to hold off rather than flood the group.
Please count me in for the group reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay! I already have the book and I'm will be the moderator or co-mod for the group :)
Amanda wrote: "I've broken The Second Sex down into a 13 week schedule, but if we're going ahead with a side reading of Kavalier and Clay, perhaps it might be a good idea to hold off rather than flood the group."That seems wise, especially with the two official reads coming up in a few weeks. Please keep it in mind for a couple months from now.
No, we're waiting until we've "cleaned house" before opening he threads to nominate. Get your choices in mind!
Side read of The Moonstone by Wilkie CollinsStart date February 6
Group members: Kristina, Kathy, Judy, Heather, Sandi, Martha, Andrea
My copy is an ebook version. I'd prefer that someone with a book do the schedule.

I have a copy but as I currently live in multiple places I won't be able to get it until next Friday. If nobody else has one I can try work out a schedule next weekend

Sounds great, Heather! Thanks for doing this for us. Kathy, I picked 2/6/12 as that's the first Monday in Feb. I'll probably still be trudging through Brideshead Revisited. I think it's a big one, too. :-)
Well, I didn't do anything, Heather, but whatever I can do, I will. Whoever wants to do the schedule is fine with me. My version is an onnibus w/ Woman In White so It will be different than others.
Whoever wants to is fine. I'm slow with books mainly because I read several at once. Crazy, I know, but it seems more fun to me that way.
I would also like to be added to the side read group for The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. I've been dying to read it, I hope I can make time for it. I'll know better by late January if I can do this.

Andrea, I'll add you to the list above. Hope you can find time. I've been wanting to read it for at least a year. Thanks for the schedule, Kristina. Looks good to me.
Have you read No Name? It's supposed to be really good, too. I want to read it after this one. Maybe later in the year ... late summer or fall. I love Collins, but don't like to read the same author all the time. You might also read The Dead Secret. I don't think it would be considered a chunkster, but it's another good one by him. I read it about a year ago.
Andrea wrote: "The schedule looks great!I've been dying to read this since we read the Woman in White as a group."
me too...I just need to see if I have the time when it gets closer...especially with Kavalier and Clay going too...
I just downloaded Moonstone, so I'm in for the side read. I read Woman in White the summer of 1988 (It was a high school read). I remember it being my favorite of the list of summer reads I had to do, but I don't remember much of it, I wish I handn't missed the group read here, but glad I get to do Moonstone.
Think the schedule looks perfect. I'm really excited about this one. It's supposed to be the first detective novel, I genre I enjoy reading, so I'm looking forward to seeing the style and how it's developed over the years.
I'm really hoping to join in w/The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay side read. I need to catch up with East of Eden and a couple of other books I have going. Too many books, too little time! : )
If someone would give me a start and end date for the Moonstone, I can add it to the bookshelf. Same for The Second Sex, even if neither of these are started until next February or so. Better to put them on the bookshelf earlier rather than later. (And also, we don't want too many Side Reads going at once, so getting them up/planned now will serve as place holders.)

I just posted the thread for The Moonstone so we can keep track of them all.
for those of you reading The Second Sex, could you get me a schedule for the read? That way Loretta and I can get everything posted and adjusted in the group. Thanks!
