This is a children's book (maybe ages 10 and up) about a person (a woman, if I recall correctly) who has a goldfish pond and it keeps getting raided by a cat. She/he "adopts" the cat, or more so, is "adopted by 'The Cat')...The Cat is very independent and goes by the name "The Cat". I would like to say that the cat communicates telepathically with the person, but it's been too long since I read it.

I probably read this book back in the mid-60s so it is an old book, and I'd like to say it is called "The Cat" or something similar but I suspect that it wasn't. I also think the cat was black, too, but not sure about that detail.
I immediately thought of It's Like This, Cat, but I don't think it has anything about a goldfish pond.
Thanks, Regan, but I don't think that is it. I do appreciate the attempt and may even check out the book you mentioned. It definitely wasn't set in New York City, and I seem to recall that the point of view is sometimes by the cat itself.
I think I read this too when I was a kid (the goldfish pond scene rings a bell), and that it may be The Cat and Mrs. Cary by Doris Gates.
Emily, that might be it. I don't recall the nephew part, but then it was more than 40+ years since I would have read it. I will check it out at the library, and consider this query solved.
