Fran | 12278 comments I finished Perfect Cover (The Squad, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes today 9/18. I agree Yz, it was great! 4*. Really well-written, fun and clever. I love Toby!

I agree. Toby has just the right amount of snarkiness to make her likeable.

Barbara ★ | 3901 comments On Monday 9/24, I finished Firelight (Darkest London, #1) by Kristen Callihan which I thought was a terrific series starter with lots to offer: historical, paranormal, gothic, romance and psychic abilities. And in the next book...werewolves.

Ty | 1943 comments finished Perfect Cover (The Squad, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes today. ★★★★
light and fluffy read with some amusing one-liners. major suspension of disbelief required. XD

message 455: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments I finished Perfect Cover (The Squad, #1) by Jennifer Lynn Barnes yesterday (27 Sep). I agree with what Ty said but my I gave it 3 stars. There's a sequel but I'm on the fence to read it.

message 456: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I agree, definite suspension of belief. But it made me smile the whole time. I read somewhere that the sequel is the last one and the series isn't be continued. Makes me not want to rush out and read it.

message 457: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Agreed, Fran. I was smiling and occasionally laughing. It's the obvious sequel bait that irritated me. And the fact of the physical stuff about the Cheerleaders. But then, we don't have cheerleaders here so I really can't say. The sequel was out in 2008 so I figured the author isn't going to continue. I don't want to read the sequel if the loose ends esp involving Jack Peyton aren't tied up. I'm suspecting not. Which makes me not so eager to read the sequel.

message 458: by Ty (new)

Ty | 1943 comments From the reviews, it doesn't seem as tho many readers are as enthusiastic about the sequel as the first. While I enjoyed the first, nothing in it really compels me to want to read the sequel, particularly the non-existent chemistry with Jack. I did love her brother though and found their sibling relationship and his girl-crazy attitude to be pretty much the only realistic thing in the book.

message 459: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I know it wasn't realistic, but Toby's snarky attitude and the whole idea that the 'air-brained' cheerleaders were really just acting the expected role and were really talented, unique girls really entertained me.

message 460: by Ty (new)

Ty | 1943 comments I think "dislocated crotch" is probably one of my favorite phrases lately. haha

I really loved Grave Mercy -- read it earlier this year (for SOS Bingo, in fact). Not what I was expecting, but for me, in a good way.

message 475: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I finished Bad Kitty (Bad Kitty, #1) by Michele Jaffe today 10/23.
This was a cute, fast-paced YA mystery. There was snarky dialogue (which I really like) and the story never left me bored. But there was a lot of notes/writing at the bottom of the pages that took you out of the story a bit, and while it was cute in the beginning, it got annoying after awhile.

Overall I enjoyed it. There is only 1 more in the series and I read that the author won't be writing any more in the series. This one ended on a good note so I am satisfied with leaving it at that. 4*

message 476: by Ty (new)

Ty | 1943 comments just finished Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by R.L. LaFevers today. ★★★½
Great read, very light on the romance, but reading all the ways to kill a man was quite intriguing :). I can't help feeling there was something missing though, particularly in the romance development department, but maybe that's just me being greedy.

message 477: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments I finished Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by R.L. LaFevers today, 2 Nov. It was an ok book and I rated it 2 stars. Aspects of it were interesting but ultimately, I wasn't really sucked it and I certainly won't remember it. An meh book for me but one that I'd still recommend to others who I think will enjoy it more.

message 478: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 987 comments I just finished Paper Towns by John Green Nov. 2nd. I feel like I devoured it. It made me think and it made laugh. I gave it 5 stars.

message 479: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) finished The Sherlockian by Graham Moore today and give it 3 stars. It didn't quite live up to my expectations

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 2244 comments "Random Book List Challenge #102"

I read Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin, #1) by R.L. LaFevers last week, and this book was ok. It reminded me a lot of Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) by Kristin Cashore as far as writing style goes but it was enjoyable.

message 481: by Ty (new)

Ty | 1943 comments funny you say that, I read Graceling a couple days after Grave Mercy and saw a lot of similarities also, though I think that Graceling was a much better treatment of the YA/Historical/fantasy-ish aspect.
