No problem, Heidi.

But Bun those things have never gone away. Except perhaps courtesy and hats which have recently made a come back due to the lack of an ozone layer.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Slowing down and not being in a hurry needs to make a comeback.

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

I did assume that sidewalk was the equivalent to a footpath. Maybe I have it wrong?

message 55: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11852 comments Ooh, sidewalks. We have those.

message 56: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Many streets don't even have that, Gail. There are places that assume that nobody will walk, and therefore don't make any place for them to do so. You have to walk in the street, and people look at you funny, like "get a car."

When I lived with my SIL in Lawrence, KS on summer, I took walks for fun nd to go to work. People looked at me funny.

message 58: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I also hate when I stay in a motel in some little strip-mall town and there's something I want to go to right on the other side of the street, but I have to drive because it's too dangerous to cross on foot.

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

I have to confess that my street doesn't have a footpath, but the side curb is owned by the local council. People walk in my street daily. Young mums walking babies, runners, elderly. You aren't allowed to block the curb. People are free to walk on it without a footpath. My house backs on to the bush through which you can access 'the great north walk'. 200km of walking trails that extend throughout Sydney all the way to Newcastle. (and probable further). It would be odd not to see people walking. The more regular ones give a wave as you drive past.

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

Sarah what is a strip mall town? What makes the crossing so dangerous?

message 61: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I don't like staying in them, but sometimes I have to. There are some towns that don't seem to have a center anymore, but instead just have a lot of big-box chain stores on two sides of a busy street.
There are six lanes of traffic separating the two sides of the street, usually with a small median, but nobody is looking for people on foot, so you end up running across a highway if you want to brave it. Or getting in the car and driving.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds extremely bizarre. Nothing like that exists here. Something would always be provided to give walking access. All our roads are controled by State government. There are always crossings on major roads. Lights at least. Maybe it's our small population.

message 63: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Sidewalks for example. I have lived in a number of different neighborhoods that had no sidewalks.

I work in a neighborhood without sidewalks, a pretty residential area with just...no sidewalks. I see people walking all the time, which makes me nervous, esp. at night, when they all carry flashights and wave them at cars so the drivers know pedestrians are present.

I like that Gail doesn't know about strip mall towns.

I sometimes dream about the one near us, Berthoud.

Sarah | 13814 comments Sally wrote: "I like that Gail doesn't know about strip mall towns."
I like that too.
Gail, how about fake town squares that are really malls? Do you have any of those?
There's one near us, and it creeps me out. Music comes out of the ground. I saw Pleasantville there, and then walked out into what looked and felt like Pleasantville.

message 66: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (bonfiggi) There's a fake town that's a mall near me. It's called Victoria Gardens. I like to shop at a few stores there, but I feel bad when I see a pair of ravens circling above, lamenting the loss of their territory.

message 67: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments That is good news. Maybe the word extinct will eventually become extinct.

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments That's awesome, Bun! I think reverse engineering animals back into existence is awesome as long as it doesn't make people more cavalier about losing them in the first place.
They've brought back Przewalski's wild horses too, which doesn't have as specific a purpose as your aurochs, but is cool anyway..

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

It's going to be a while before the Tasmanian Tiger comes back from extinction. Now that would be cool.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments going to the library to study...it made a great excuse to get out of the house on a weeknight. Unfortunately, since so many kids now have computers to gather information, using the library for resource materials is I guess, left to the poor who can't afford to own a computer and go to the library to use theirs. too bad. It was great fun and sometimes you actually did indeed study'

You are right Sarah the Tasmanian Devils are also in trouble. It would be devastating if we lost those as well.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I think kids using bicycles to get around should make a comeback. when i was a kid many moons ago it was either ride the bike, walk or,if I had the money, take the bus. we had 1 car and my dad used it to get to work. my mom walked to work. I liked being able to get around on my own because it made me feel independent and a little grown up. It meant my parents trusted me.If my son wanted to get around he either walked, rode his bicycle or took a bus/streetcar. He never got his driver's license until he was 21 because:1)san francisco has few parking spaces. 2)public transportation was pretty good.

A lot of people ride bikes in my neighborhood - as transportation, not just exercise. Most of them don't have lights. I'm just waiting for someone to get killed.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I miss the vinyl records I lost in my move from San Francisco to Las Vegas. i lost about 1/3rd of my collection. I love my vinyl. I like cd's but i love my vinyl. Can't fine It's a Beautiful Day on cd. unless I make it myself. i think vinyl gives more emotions to the song.

message 84: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments what needs to make a comeback: washing dishes by hand. 1)you save water 2)you save power use. 3)you have time to talk to whomever is helping you or you have time to reflect on what has gone on in your day. If you are worried about germs, heat water in your teakettle while washing & rinsing your dishes then pour over all the dishes in your dish strainer.

message 85: by Phil (new)

I wash dishes by hand and I'm not convinced it saves much water. Michele, what germs are you referring to? You're not eating raw meat, are you?

Vinyl and along with it, the return of the E.J. Korvette all-label sale.

message 90: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments My dishwasher is far more economical on water than washing by hand. I wash pots and pans and knives by hand, but there's not usually anyone around to keep me company. Well, Bo, in his usual kitchen formation as eternally hopeful tripping hazard.

message 91: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments how can you stand to have dirty dishes lying around the house all day? If there are more than 3 items in my sink, I automatically wash them. guess all that grandmotherly training took after all. If there are only 1 or 2 people in the house and one of them is out all day, it takes a long time to get a full load for the dishwasher and in the meantime you have dirty dishes sitting in your dishwasher. hidden but still dirty. yuck. Plus, all the work rinsing your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, you might as well just wash them and get them out of the way.

message 92: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments we obviously did not have the same grandmother.

Ha! Love this.

But I did buy some Henckels last year, and those I wash by hand religiously.

Housework is at the bottom of my motivation, I'm sure Misha's grandma wouldn't step an inch in my house.

message 96: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I had my parents and my in-laws to thanksgiving dinner many years ago and my mom kept apologizing for my poor housekeeping. I never invited them over with other company again. by themselves, yes but not with anyone outside my birth family. I don't go around checking to see if someone vacuumed under the sofa or actually, vacuumed at all. I don't peek under the bed to see if someone gathered all the dust bunnies. I never comment on someone else's housekeeping. so long as there are no visible cockroaches, I am A-OK.
