I write because I'm too dumb for rocket science and not handsome enough for movies . . .

I spent over 30 years enforcing laws that are widely misunderstood, and I collected a whole hatful of anecdotes, experiences, and strange characters in the process.

Writing a book seemed the logical way to explain something of the subject while entertaining the reader with a story based on things I'd seen and done and knew. I'd given it some thought and been told by many people who listened to my stories that I should write - so I did.

It proved to be startlingly easy, but in considering that remark let's make sure we discern between writing stuff down, and making it readable. The latter was not easy, nor nearly as much fun. It took about twice as long to make it good as it did to create it.
