Feel overwhelmed by all the books on your TBR list? I have a list 4 notebook pages long and it just keeps getting longer because of this site! haha...I think I've decided for myself though that I'm just going to read whatever and quit worrying so much with the list.

I've got my list on goodreads but I've also got it in an excel file...I'm up to DF with my authors that I want to read...so yeah it seems a bit overwhelming sometimes expecially since I add new books all the time but I figure I've got a lot of catching up to do...I didn't read a lot during my collge and master's program years.
I just notice that I rearrange the order of when I want to buy them.... Im constantly fretting about which one i want more.... since I refuse to buy too many at one time :)
I think my TBR pile would be a lot less daunting if I actually spent more time reading the books rather than being on GRs making more of a list! But that wouldn't be as much fun!
OMG Sherry, You are so right! I keep looking at what others are reading, or buying, and my TBR pile keeps growing!! But I love it!
Actually, since I have been on GR I have been reading more, I was starting to feel like too much of an odd-ball, you know with people asking is that another book? wow you read so much! and so forth, you start feeling some what like an alien ... deep thought "maybe there is something wrong with reading so much" ... but now knowing all of you, sharing thoughts about the books, having the group reads, and knowing so many people that read a lot more than I do, makes me feel like I belong ... less weird!
I feel weirder for not reading enough. And I'm sick! I should be finished the whole Narnia series by now! And started at least two of the books I've bought! Gr...
Ive felt the same way Lorene well said and i couldnt have made a better discovery than GR my list has grown but so have my intrests and avenues to explore thank you all before it was so much work to find new authors and books! Now its great like having a card catalog in my living room!!
My spending hasn't increased since I buy very few books because of lack of $$. BUT I find that I can not leave the library without at least 5 books. And I usually only get to read 2 or 3. But once I get down to only have one left to read (if I get that way) I have to go get more books to have that security. haha
ditto, Carrie, and I refuse to buy from Dymocks or Angus and Robertson unless it's something that's rare and I can't find it on Amazon or eBay. I do buy the books I want right now that are new out from Target, Kmart or Big W but they're under $20.My goodness, my books have multiplied by about 10 since joining Goodreads and I think that's being conservative, it's probably much, much more!! And I use this opportunity to thank all the wonderful people in this particular group for recommending fabulous books and sharing what they're reading and how they liked/disliked certain books - you guys are fantastic!! I only hope I can repay you with good recs too :-)
Oh yes! My pile of TBR is growing both on paper and on my bookshelf! Lorena, I'm with you on the alien thing - people looking at me with one eyebrow cocked and asking "another book?". YES! This is what I love, I'm not an alcaholic or a drug adict, just leave me in peace to be a bookaholic.
I think the number of books I have on my TBR gets really confusing sometiimes though as I can spend a good few hours changing my mind over and over about what to read next, there are just too many.
At least I'm not alone........:-)
Not so much overwhelmed as feeling like I have this mission to read every book I can get my hands on. Besides getting to read all of your interesting points of view, I am hearing of authors that I probably never would have come across otherwise, or maybe I'm more likely to read a book on my shelf that has just been sitting there.
I love reading about books as much as I love reading books themselves, and I used to stress about the large stacks of TBRs in my house, but I'm over it. Life is to short to deny myself my books :)
I think my grad schooling is to blame, but I often will read more about the author and the work than I will the work itself! And I wonder why my TBR grows so quickly.
Do you guys ever make up stories about authors you had read more than once? You know as you read more of a guy's work you kind of get a sense of who they are ... well, I do and I make up stories about them, Saramago has bowel problems, you know nothing serious but they are there and also he has a little bit of OCD about cleaningness, yeah, he doesn't like a mess and he'll trow a fit about it too ... Garcia Marquez has fears about old age and sexuality, and also he can't get over the fact we had a civil war that lasted 50 years, so if you see him at a party don't get him started on that.
Holy cow, that is funny. I haven't read either author, but I am assuming their characters have some of these issues??
Yeah, you could say that ... LOL ... Hey you need to read Blindness and Seeing by Saramago, best two books I have read this year ... very good. But don't say I didn't warn you about the whole bowel problem thing! ;o)
Alright, I'll take your word for it. I'll put Blindess onto the list to start with. I am excited to read all of these books/authors I've never heard of before (in addition to the ones that I have!)
Lorena, that's great..haha. I just may start doing that with Borges and King. Actually, King's pretty good about putting his personal issues in his novels..haha.
Kirsty, we may all be just a lil bit crazy...haha. It's a beautiful thing.
I am overwhelmed by all the fabulous books I want to read. I have close to 200 books I've purchased and haven't read yet, and every time I go to a bookstore I purchase more. What's worse is I'm a bit OCD so when I see a book by an author who I like, I have to pick that book up right away. Furthermore, I collect serieses (sp?)... Grrr!I also maintain my booklist in an Excel spreadsheet. It's a bit crazy. It lists the author, series (plus order), title, genre, if I own it, if I've read it, if it's a Christian author, and if he/she has a MySpace account. I keep it sorted alphabetically by author, then by series order within that author, and then by book title. It's easy to find things on the list, but with over 1800 books on the list I have a hard time remembering what they're all about.
It's just craziness!
Although, I must say I embrace the crazy and just go with it. If I see a book I really want to read, I just pick it up and go. Some books I pick up and then add to a bookshelf, long forgotten until some time later when I pick it back up and remember why I bought it in the first place. What can I say; I'm a book addict.
Fiona...you made me shudder. The thought of dying scares me enough as is, but the thought of dying and not knowing how the HP series ended is too horrible for me to think about. And that fact clearly shows that I am a Harry Potter dork. :)
Holy Cow, Fiona. I have never thought of it that way. Those poor folks! :)Now I'm thinking about all the books my father "missed" as he died about three years ago. Although, if there's a heaven, there has GOT to be one hell of a library there!
yes..i feel as though i will NEVER be able to read all of these books on my list. i never know which one to pick next after I finish one.
I just put 10 or so books on my request list at the library and whatever comes in, I read. If I'm not ready for it, I pick something off of my shelf and read that till I'm ready. I always have about 5 books going at any one time anyway. One or 2 books of study and several novels. I need a lot of variety. ^^
Ikiwiki, that's just... wow!!! You're so organized! I didn't even do that for school or work. Congrats!I don't have lists. I'm anti-lists, actually *lol* I don't even have lists when i go to the grocery store. The closest resemblance to a list is when I write down on some post-its *lol* the names of some authors I want to check out at the bookstore. My TBR books are in my head, and it better stay in there, 'cause I blame you people and your interesting recommendations for my latest book spendings *lol* I don't need tangible proof of my book-craziness (Lorena - message #8, I'm with you 100%).
The only to be read list is on here, and these books have been hanging around forever. I don't feel overwhelmed, but I do feel like I'm not making progress. I wish I could follow it better though.
I just try to read a TBR for every "spontaneous" book I read. The library is less than a mile from my house and I have to drive past it to get home, so I stop frequently. Oddly enough, now that I think about it, I feel comforted by a tall TBR stack.
Are you kidding I have 2 notebooks filled with tbr titles.Plus at least just about 100 here that i still haven't read. because i keep hearing about books here and browsing the library and have a disorder where i have to go home with everyhting that sounds good.
I finally put a halt to adding to my TBR until I whittle it down some. I have a whole box of books I ordered in a frantic purchase frenzy because I had to read them right away and I haven't even opened th box 30 days later. I have a solemn promise to myself to not buy or check out any new books until I'm through the ones I have.
So I brazenly posted that yesterday and you know what I discovered myself doing today? Adding TBR titles to my goodreads and shelfari shelves so I wouldn't forget them once my self imposed exile is over and I can start again, LOL. I'm pathetic.
Erin,When I read message 39, my first thought was "OMG, but what if someone recommends a book and you don't write it down. And then you forget about it. And you'll never read it. OMG!"
I guess that about sums up my obsession. I tell myself not to add anything more to my GR TBR list, but I can't help it. Imagine all the books I might miss if I don't remember the recommendation. I use to read the recent updates lists on GR when bored (okay, when avoiding work), but I added probably 50+ books on my list that way. And with you guys making recommendations, and my family, the list just keeps growing.
And, many books I have to buy. I place a self-imposed buying freeze on every so often, but it never lasts long. My problem is that I can't get to the books fast enough to make me happy. I want to read them all RIGHT NOW! And I'm disappointed when I see all the books on my unread shelf at home.
Then, I take a DDEEEEEPPP breath, let it out slowly, and remind myself: "Reading is fun, not stressful". No point in reading if all it does is add one more stressor to me. Then I relax and remember to enjoy each book I'm reading, instead of worrying about which books are peeking at me from the unread bookshelves.
Erin, you are a strong, strong woman. Much stronger than I'll ever be.All the best with your plans and happy reading!
Ikiwiki, before you call me strong, I suppose I should add that I also started a diet this week.... And last week... and the week before... I'm all good with the DECIDING to do a thing, but a little shaky on the execution, lol. I'll let you know in a week or two how successful I've been.... or not.... (sigh) I have, at least, weaned my library list down to the last 3 before I can start requesting again.
That's an idea.....which I am probably never will do, but the idea sounds nice and logical. It is actually true. I have a huge list in a little notebook, the one here, the one on another website, one on the computer/mail box.....and I always seem to come home with books or read books that aren't on the lists.....so I shouldn't bother making lists.
They just seem nice and make me feel closer to the books. It is like I have already a small part of them near me by writing them on my list.... and maybe unknowingly my brain stores them as read and I never buy them!!!
I buy all the books I want and put them out for sale. Hopefully most of them sell leaving me four or five for the month to read.
Yes the TBR list keeps growing. Something to look forward too in retirement.
I finally had to limit myself to library books only. I just can't afford to keep buying books, and I don't have the space. When I visit my family, I have to go to Half Price Books though. I don't have one here in LAS. I actually save space in my suitcase for 6-12 books when I visit.
So I can really relate to lots of the posts here...my list of books to read is literally 5 full, typed pages at this point. This is my personal list. I also have a one page list from a writing program I went to a few years ago. The nice thing is that I am an English major, so this semester I am knocking three books off of that list, and hopefully a couple more next semester. These days I ALWAYS bring some paper and a pen to a bookstore so that I can write down titles if I don't want to spend the money. I also try to buy books that are on my TBR list in the first place.
I also have the books that I own and haven't read, and even though I keep buying, I managed to make a decent indentation in that this summer.
So many books, so little time...
