Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Hi All,

What is one thing or "some" things you feel might not be around much longer. I mean in terms of stuff we use, things we do, ways of life, anything.

The one thing for me I'll say is post offices. I think post offices won't be around for long. I believe everyone is gonna be using the computer for the paper stuff and using stuff like UPS for when they receive packages or when things need to be shipped to people. Is that silly? I really believe that might happen. The amount of folks who use regular mail is decreasing. Of course I don't know the future but if post offices disappeared, I wouldn't be surprised. Plus the stamps are going up because folks don't send as much mail and this makes more folks email, more.

They even say we'll be able to vote from our home computers one day! Wow. Can you imagine not leaving the house to vote? LOL! But yeah, I think post offices might not be around. People can pay bills, do their taxes, anything online except for when it comes to the packages. And there can be alternatives for that.

Anyway, what do you guys think might change in the future?

Best Wishes!

new_user Ooooh, good question! I think you may be right. I think eventually grocery stores will go the same way too. Dun dun DUN! LOL.

I hope the post office never close. We need the post office no matter what.

They better not close the library down, but if they strongly go the ebook route, then the libraries can be next to vanish in the future.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) LOL, New User...grocery stores? Let's hope not! Ha, ha!

Arch, they already have it where people are getting ebooks from libraries. You download them from the site and keep it a certain amount of time like you do a physical book. I don't know if libraries will go away but I don't think it would be because of ebooks. The economy is hurting some of the libraries because some cities are complaining about money, etc. I know we've lost a few of the smaller libraries in Houston due to funding, etc.

Who knows what will happen. I think department stores and clothing stores have a big chance of being gone. Everyone's ordering clothes off the net more and more. That's what happened to video stores and music stores. I know that a lot of the department stores I see, hardly anyone is in them. Not even when there's a sale.

Best Wishes!

Stacey,

I know that people can download ebooks from their libraries online site, but say all the books go the ebook route? Why have a library open, when a person can just use the site to checkout ebooks?

I have been buying books from the library for almost 13 years. I know some people donate books to the library, but the library also pull books from their shelves to sell as well. They sell music dvds and movies as well.

Since ebooks are popular and a lot of people are buying ereaders, after awhile, people will not want to go the libraries to check out books. A lot of books that are in print are in ebooks as well and they can be checked out from the library site. I know my library have a lot of books that are on the shelves that's ebooks.

They have made ereaders for kids as well. I hate that they did that, because after a while they will be no kids books to buy in print. Thank goodness I am a writer. I will write my children stories.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) None of us really knows what will happen but in terms of libraries I think like this, what about poor people or low income folks who won't be buying ereaders or can't afford ereaders? There will have to be a place for them to get books right? If not "libraries" there would have to be something. I don't know if ereaders are gonna go down to the point where everyone can just get them off the shelf easily, maybe they will or maybe they won't but it's impossible to tell.

Even though I love ebooks and reading them, I doubt that books and libraries will just disappear. Libraries do more than give out books. They host events, they do community things, all types of stuff for kids. Libraries will be doing more of this stuff now that bookstores are dying. Now bookstores, I definitely think they will disappear. They're almost gone now. And with that, I can't see there not even being libraries. I just know that not everyone will be able to afford switching to ebooks. There's folks so poor they still don't have computers. So I think that would be a big factor in libraries sticking around.

Now will there be as many libraries? Probably not. It might end up where only the larger city libraries stay. I don't know if the smaller community ones will be around.

I also think about school. I don't know what will happen in the future but I can't see libraries disappearing unless ereaders are gonna be as cheap as buying paper. Who knows? I also know there would be some citizens, especially parents who would raise some hell if there weren't any libraries.

We can only speculate at this point I guess. We have to wait and see.

Best Wishes!

new_user LOL, SD, why not? We already have PeaPod. There's not a lot of advantage to buying person, provided you get good quality produce.

Maybe clothing stores too, although in the future one hopes it'll be easier to find the right size.

I don't have any children and I will be upset if our libraries closes.

Dyanne | 10 comments Stacey,

A lot of the libraries are now loaning out the readers.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Dyanne,

Oh I didn't know that. Wow. I admit I haven't been to the library in a while, LOL. That's interesting. I guess a lot of folks might have their chance to read ebooks.

Best Wishes!

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) New User,

Never know! LOL! But I just figured if anything stays grocery stores have a chance. But who knows? I already know folks who order their food off the internet or by phone from stores. I'd love to do that since I'm borderline recluse. Ha, ha! I hate going out unless I got to.

Arch, I don't have kids either and don't want 'em. LOL! I've been angry when things changed. For instance, I still love CDs and still listen to them and buy them. I never wanted an ipod and still don't. Never had one. But if it comes to where I can't find CD players anymore, I guess I'll have to just adapt. It's true sometimes change is something we don't care for but most times we don't have a choice but to go along with it.

I tell folks this, I'll be listening to CD's until every last player goes off the planet. LOL! On the flipside though, I wouldn't be against "checking" out an ipod now. I guess I've softened because this time last year I was swearing up and down I'd never even try one out! But I'd give it a chance just to see if I'd like it. That's how I was with ebooks. Didn't want an ereader at all, got one and love it so much you can't get me to touch a print book unless I have to. Who knows with ipods? I might love them too.

Best Wishes!

Chicki Brown (chicki663) | 130 comments Stacy,
Once you get an MP-3 player, CDs just seem like a pain in the butt! I have my smooth instrumental jazz on one and my workout music on the iPod Touch I bought from the pawn shop for $10.00! Just like the e-readers, you can't imagine carrying around hundreds of CDs when you can have 10,000 songs on one little device! Oh, I looove technology ...

Stacy, I still have my vcr from when I was 16 years old. I don't play it though, because I no longer have the remote control, so I play the one that I have bought from a pawnshop 5 years ago. It has the remote control and that's how I record shows.

Chicki, I had a MP-3/CD player and it broke a week ago. It only lasted me almost two years. A regular CD player lasted me longer than that.

I don't think that I will be buying the regular mp3 player. Music doesn't sound as good as they sound on a CD player, in my opinion. I have listened to a regular mp3 player.

Chicki Brown (chicki663) | 130 comments Sorry, Arch. I have to disagree. With the right earbuds, the sound quality is better than CD. Sometimes I can believe the volume (fullness) achieved by a good MP3 player. I only paid $30 for the first one and $10 for the iPod (but that was from a pawn shop.)

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) I agree we'll see less and less libraries. Where I live, they don't carry as many magazines anymore, and the references materials are all outdated because you can get them online. With more books going the e-route, eventually the libraries will carry less copies of books b/c folks will be able to check them out online (already available) and download as audio and e-files.

What won't be around in the future:
1. Satellite radio: Why pay a subscription when you can download your own music mixes on your ipod/mp3 player and play in the car? The talk shows on there will find another venue.

2. Newspapers/magazines. That industry is already dying, although I'm still one of the people who has magazine subscriptions. I enjoy flipping through a magazine, tearing out interesting articles, etc., but you can just subscribe to their e-newsletters and get pretty much the same info. I find myself doing that more now. I canceled 2 magazine subscriptions b/c I was getting a lot of the same info via email.

I would hope that magazines would not go. They come in handy for school projects, when you needs pictures. I wouldn't want to have to print a page out, just to cut pictures.

Kids still use pictures from magazines right? I know we did, when I was in school.

I use to even use people pictures from magazines as my characters for my home made covers.

message 17: by Delaney (new)

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) Sorry, Arch, I think they're going the way of the dinosaur. They're actually killing themselves off by offering the same content online for free.

As for photos, I have a nephew and I've helped him several times with projects, and we just do a search online, print, and cut. No paper magazines needed.

I rather have a magazine than print from online. Save ink.

Trenice Has anyone said VCR's yet? I think they have about a shelf life of 10 yrs and then, teenagers will be asking what's that? LOL

I have my vcr from when I was 16 years old Trenice and I am in my thirties. I'm using the one I bought 5 years ago.

Kasey Moone (kaseymoone) | 30 comments I have one of those VCRs/DVD devices, though I rarely use the VCR tool. LOL. I teach on the side, and I rarely use the chalkboard anymore. I use a smartboard which is a mix between a computer and mark-up pad. This way I don't have to get chalk all over me. Some rooms at my school don't even have chalkboards. Ahh, times are changing. LOL.
