So I haven't looked at them because we didn't really have a good track record with them.

Melanie (melaina) | 1339 comments Man.. I'm still crying from finishing The Book Thief just now! What a tear-jerker! The last 100 pages killed me! Loved it!

message 188: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i liked The Book Thief, but I didn't love it...and I think it is because I took a class in undergrad on the Holocaust and it seemed like places that it was trying to justify the actions or inaction of the german citizens - especially in the one scene where they see the jews in the concentration camp...

Here in Geneva we were also pretty much raised on the Holocaust - we got visits with Holocaust survivors in elementary, junior high and high school, and read a lot of literature centered around it: Anne Frank, The Reader,.. Not to mention visiting the camps and prisons in Germany..

What I loved about this book was how different it was from the majority of that literature - I didn't feel like it was trying to justify the German's inaction - more that it centered around a small family and characters that in their own way rebelled against the Nazi regime - maybe not enough according to you or me, but I loved the way Liesel (slowly maybe) realizes that what she's taught by the Nazis is criminal - especially at that last Jew march through the streets.. I don't know, I have a lot of conflicted feelings left over, but I definitely loved this book, and thought that the writing, although a little weird for my tastes, was perfect for the story..

message 190: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I was def. conflicted as well...

It was like when I was reading Mao's Last Dancer - its really good to see how Cunxin goes from believing in Mao's communist regime because that is how he is raised, to the United States and seeing how his government lied to him, etc
